Heard y’all loud and clear. ;3 I’ve decided to keep Fuzzbutts weird- that is, keep the world free of regular animals. All animals in FB are fully sapient and anthropomorphic, save for insects and fish. Most fish. Not sharks, though. As oceanic mammals evolved for life on land, sharks followed right behind, and the reason why is a complete anthropological-zoological mystery. Maybe they’re just too jawsome~
To answer the other question, yes, Katie is single (and looking to mingle!). Her and her pal Phoebe there are just marine bio buddies~

2024-09-27 02:41:26 +0000 UTCRegarding Brooke's response to Katie, it might be worth noting that dolphins in the real world target, injure, and kill sharks (including great whites) very often. It is also true that dolphins and sharks often form mutually beneficial arrangements in the wild. Dolphins are social creatures and thus carry strength (and safety) in numbers. ..Which is a roundabout way of saying that the stereotypes of sharks and dolphins might differ from the stereotypes put on them from other species. Sharks might be draconian brutes in most's eyes, but to dolphins? They could easily be “isolationist weirdos who look uncomfortably like us”. From sharks, the stereotype of dolphins could be “those two-faced jerks who cause havoc and might gang up on us”.

Does having such large teeth affect their speech on land similarly? I remember a post awhile back about baby Dom/carnivores with large fangs sometimes having to go to speech therapy to accommodate such chompers. Do sharks in FB lose teeth as often as sharks in real life do, or is their dental situation more like ours, with just one set of baby teeth? I imagine that dental care for a shark in FB might be a bit of a nightmare…

Would someone like, say, Brooke (for no particular reason) get flack for pining after Katie’s shark bod? Would she have it a little bit easier considering she’s an aquatic mammal rather than a fully furred land mammal? Or is there some weird feeling between sharks and dolphins in general in FB?

2024-09-09 19:20:12 +0000 UTCYes, it IS considered weird for sharks to be into boobs. Or mammals. Or non-sharks entirely. Shark cultural attitudes vary by species and location, but great whites (especially ocean-dwelling great whites) like Katie are notoriously draconian. Sharks have always been feared and maligned by society, and so sharks have embraced a fierce species pride in response to being so commonly typecast as stupid violent brutes. Great whites are the most prideful of all, valuing strength and power above all else. They tend to view mammals as soft, silly, squishy, and weak. They find mammalian qualities like hair, breasts, and lactation to be extremely odd and off-putting. Katie (and Phoebe) were both largely raised/socialized on land, around mammals, so they did not absorb the "ew, gross puny mammal" attitude of typical large ocean sharks. Katie is definitely attracted to other sharks, but she also finds mammals to be oddly enticing in their softness and warm body heat. Ocean hard and cold, tiddy warm and soft. Don't let Katie's big babydoll eyes fool you, she is a FREAK that wants to bite bite BITE when she sees the nude female form, mammal or no, and she probably struggles thinking she has a problematic "mammal fetish" and is secretly really neurotic about it and pent-up, like Legoshi from Beastars. Phoebe meanwhile goes to titty bars with zero shame

As Katie says, they are the only cartilaginous fish (and also the only fish) to have evolved complex intelligence and an adapted bipedal bauplan. No skates, no rays, no sawfish- sharks are the only "smart" fish in the sea. This does indeed include whale sharks, megamouth sharks, and even the mighty megalodon, who exist in FB but are elusive and rare and typically dwell only in the deep open ocean.

Galeomorphii doesn't have either, and has most of what you'd think of when you hear 'shark'. Does include whale sharks and megamouth sharks though! Imagine those in Fuzzbutts style...

Like - we just kind of assume it's a normal sexual fixation, but for things that have never *had* mammaries, is it...idk, fetish-y? Or more so, I guess, given that cultural trends dictate what body part is sexy. But given that non-mammals seem to have similar nudity taboos as mammals...idk??? ...does the underwater community have different opinions about sharks than the land community? Like - I could see a seal living mostly in the water being *more* prejudiced against Katie than one living in land, but less towards other sharks that are less...historically likely to eat a seal, probably.

They posess both gills and lungs, much like the irl African lungfish, though far more specialized. Underwater, they breath the same way all fish do, pulling water in through the mouth and flushing it through the gills to extract the oxygen. Upon exiting the water, the gills shut to prevent the structures from dehydration or damage. When returning to water, an epiglottis-like flap in the throat reflexively clamps shut, preventing the shark from accidentally inhaling water into the lungs while swimming. While marine mammals rely on sophisticated sonar, calls, squeaks, and clicks to communicate underwater, sharks lack this ability. They can speak underwater, but the sound is distorted and burbly, which doesn't win them much respect from other marine critters. Some sharks opt not to talk when underwater to preserve their dignity, which doesn't help their image as lurking, menacing predators. While sharks may be clumsy at underwater communication, they have some of the best hearing of all marine animals, able to detect the splashing of an injured fish from miles away. Brooke is often spooked by Katie's ability to locate her underwater no matter how quiet she's being- it's really no use hiding, Katie can hear your heartbeat!
