tw: discussion of weight and body issues
been feeling for a while something was missing from Marnie’s design….but last night the gremlin in my brain spoke onto me, “what if. what if bun is chub”, and voila
Marnie is soft and squishy and has a kinda fraught relationship with her body- on one hand, herbivores are supposed to be elegant and sleek…..but on the other hand, Marnie is a public school teacher and thus very, VERY often stressed, so she eats a lot for comfort (and also cuz, y’know, food tastes good). Marnie exists in a constant cycle of trying to practice consistent exercise vs wanting to eat an entire carrot cheesecake in her bathtub at 3am because her principal wrote a mean remark on her performance review. Sometimes she feels “I’m beautiful the way I am! >:3”, sometimes she feels “oh sweet tapdancing turnips I’m a BLOB that no one will ever love <O”. Hang in there, Marnie! You’re perfect the way you are~
No shade meant by this, but I think a lot of artists think of a very specific image when they draw a heavyset woman, often defaulting to a cartoonish “curvy” figure with big breasts and hips, topped off with a teeny waist. Never a double chin, never a stomach roll, never any stretch marks. I’ve never been a fan of this because it feels fake, almost like people are afraid to draw actual fat characters. So it was important to show Marnie’s folds and gut and boobs that are affected by weight and gravity. Apologies if you liked her old look, please don’t take this as a dismissal of thin women. Sometimes characters just change~
the doodle in the corner is Marnie wearing a dress from a n Easter set of Calico Critters I bought yesterday <3 She’s one fancy bun!
