Less Than Sweet

Skye is kind of a fairly self-actualized character (she's largely content with her job as a blogger/social activist, and her relationship with Sunny), so I decided to throw a wrench in her gears in the form of one character foil....Honey Meadowsweet.

Honey is sweet. Outwardly. She's polite and pleasant and organizes community bake sales. She is also, in her own words, a paragon of right-wing sensibility in a sea of bleeding heart liberalism.

Dogs are friendly and accepting- notoriously so. But they are also pack animals. While many canines in FB are perfectly welcoming, some dogs start developing notions about who does and does not constitute "pack"-ie. people who do and do not belong to their desired in-group. This social exclusivity has a curious correlation with wealth, with quite a few wealthy dogs quite focused on dictating who is permitted in their social circles, who are permitted to marry their children, and who are permitted to get their filthy paws anywhere close to their money.

Honey hails from a conservative, old-money pack that emphasized both ruthless pursuit of capital and insistence on rigid social hierarchies (eg. don't interact with the poors). Honey is a political science student currently focusing on earning her Master's degree so that she might push her values on the world. She's also acquired some repute as a social media presence...though the right word may be "grifter". It's unclear how much of Honey's political rhetoric she actually believes...she seems to simply say whatever will earn her the most online outrage. Honey, you see, is a contrarian and seems to enjoy stirring the pot for her own amusement- so she gets quite a thrill from meeting Skye, who talks about political concepts like they actually, y'know, matter. How cute!

Honey is quietly amused by Biscuit and Buddy's hopes she will someday marry Sunny and mother his children, because she's very much gay. This is something that she must unfortunately keep on the down-low within her community, lest she be shunned or ousted. Honey seems to have no trouble compromising her identity to win approval from people she seems important- she will, for example, network with older traditionalist dogs that openly sneer at queer identities. I'm sure this isn't at all slowly eating away at her soul.....nor a reason for her to be so fixated on teasing/antagonizing Skye, a dog who is unapologetically herself.

Honey's whole deal reminds me of a tiktok I saw months ago about how young pretty conservative women buy into a system that sees them as property because they're "hot property" and therefore exceptions will be made for them, either not realizing or in denial of the fact that their superiority has an expiration date and one day the politics they uphold will turn around and eat them alive just as eagerly as it does the "inferior" people they've spent their lives looking down on. Like her behavior makes my skin crawl but there's also this weird sense of perverse pity because she's actively setting herself up for a lifetime of resentment and dissatisfaction when the social framework that was designed to objectify her ends up working exactly as intended.

Oh ho ho wouldn't it be quite the twist if later in life Skye's no longer with Sunny and her and Honey meet again. Skye's like all buff or something and Honey sees her and is immediately thrown into a gay panic. Like "OH NO SHE'S HOT!! But but she's not supposed to be. I hate her I'm supposed to hate her. But aaahhh she's so sexy. Shes so attractive...oh no she's coming this way." Skye passes her and gives her a nod and a small smile which proceeds to make Honey a bit weak in knees. Like this is set when they are in their late 20s early 30s and Honey's established in the conservative party and is well known. Then Skye shows up again and immediately throws her into a panic. Skye pretty much catches on the Honey is thrown into a gay panic whenever she sees her and Skye THOROUGHLY enjoys messing with her and getting her all awkward. Then whoopse romantic feelings emerge and it just gets more awkward and a bit sweet.

Oooh man Honey is already shaping up to be a fascinating character and I cannot wait to see where this goes. Really hoping people take the time to try and understand the reasoning behind her actions and not just jump straight to calling her names and other bad stuff. Like yes she’s definitely not doing good things but you still need to acknowledge the social climate she grew up in and why she believes in the things she does But yes nevertheless I’m very curious to see how she develops and what might cause cracks to start to form in her metaphorical mirror
