Wanna feel old? A Canterlot Wedding aired ten years ago! In spring 2012. On the Hub Network, a channel that no longer exists. 🙃 I was feeling nostalgic and decided to give it a rewatch. It's not nearly as good as I remember. Just kind of a serviceable episode of children's television, with a very predictable plot and somewhat underwhelming songs. It doesn't really compare to the animation and music of later seasons of MLP. This Day Aria still fucking SLAPS tho.
For all the episode's general okay-ness, I remember the fucking HYPE when it first aired. 2012 was when the brony subculture was really starting to kick off, becoming inescapable on the internet. I remember I'd only caught an episode or two of MLP season 1 and was idly doodling Fluttershy in my notebook when some random guy peeked over my shoulder and excitedly asked if I'd seen season 2 yet. When the Royal Wedding episode dropped, I distinctly remember what can only be described as a fandom shockwave. An explosion of endless fanart, covers and parodies of the music, so, so many old memes with impact font. And know what? I was excited to be a part of it all. The MLP fandom has its issues and unsavory corners of the internet, but the sheer energy of it back then, the enthusiasm and boundless creativity- all over a bunch of cartoon ponies- has honestly been a very fun rollercoaster, a phenomenon I haven't really ever experienced ever again, not in any other fandom. Like lightning in a bottle. The fandom is still present on the internet, though far more scattered and subdued. And idk, I kinda miss that unapologetic collective passion, where you couldn't wait to catch the latest episode and tune into online discussions and fanart. Now everybody is older and more cynical....myself included. But I still get a sliver of that nostalgic happiness when False Cadence walks down the aisle~
Finally the moment has arrived~
For me to be one lucky bride.
