I asked y'all what species you thought I should use for my planned conspiracy theorist character and "aye-aye" (Daubentonia madagascariensis) really seemed to be the popular choice! I dig it, those long spindly fingers and huge eyes are a perfect fit.

Meet Mimi. Disheveled appearance and frumpy mom-clothes aside, Mimi is younger than you think. She's currently a Ph.D student of primatology at Critter City Zooniversity. She also works there part-time as a librarian. Mimi is utterly brilliant, passionate, and extremely eccentric. Convinced that the world around her holds secrets beyond imagination, Mimi spends much of her free time munching handfuls of toasted grubs, obsessively pouring over curious, long-discarded scientific theories. She can't help it. Where did everyone come from? How did everyone, no matter how different, seem to evolve sapience around the same time? Why did some animals develop intelligence and culture, while some species, like bugs and fish, remain inert and feral? Their world seems quite silly and inconsistent when you really think about it. There's got to be something greater at play here.....

Mimi hosts a podcast that she uses to chatter endlessly about her bizarre findings and hypotheses. She is a distant cousin of Penny's, and much like her cousin, has pretty much zero sense of personal space or social filter. Mimi Aiyai says what she means, does what she wants, and does not care about the fools that laugh at her or whisper behind her back. Someday the whole world will see her theories as scientific fact, and then we'll see who's crazy, Bruce! >:D

Your comment inspired me to to re-read the Mist. Probably my favorite King story, even if (imo) the movie has a better ending. ;) The most commonly agreed upon explanation for why so many animals simultaneously evolved intelligence is that it was a byproduct of them becoming more social. Living in tribes was beneficial for hunting/gathering and caring for young, so animals all across the board evolved to do so. From this came the development of larger brains, language, tool use, art, etc. Animals all over had to evolve rapidly to keep up with their peers. Civilization is born as critters slowly stop hunting and eating each other and establish trade instead. Symbiosis shapes species, for example herding dogs are thought to have evolved to protect the sheep and cattle they formed trade alliances with. Mimi thinks these theories have more holes than swiss cheese, and substitutes her own conspiracies instead.

Something about her is giving me big Mrs. Carmody from The Mist vibes. I love that she has giant eyes but still needs glasses. So what's the agreed upon scientific explanation for almost every animal having sapience? And what are the crazy conspiracy theories about it? I need the lore!! 🤓
