TBH, the spines remind me of Brain Gremlin from Gremlins 2. But in a good way, I promise, I love that film and I love Brain Gremlin. So Ellie is even more awesome with the spines!

Consider: Phoenix was/is in a rock band. It’s a casual thing mostly done for fun, but Phoenix is still a pretty talented vocalist and can shred an electric guitar. Smoky used to be her drummer, but quit when he started spywork, or as Phoenix playfully puts it, “when he sold out to the Man”. She’s pretty tickled when Ellie expresses an interest in hard rock, and gleefully teaches her to play guitar. She, Nix, and Smoky have rock n’ roll jam sessions all the time, to the chagrin and splitting headaches of all neighbors involved. Yep. Montezuma’s a total worrywort when it comes to his daughter, he just can’t help it. For example, as she was growing up, he was adamant about her being homeschooled, for her own safety….while simultaneously feeling guilty that he was isolating her from other kids, the same way his parents did to him. When Ellie expresses that she wants to attend regular school, Pan and Smoky are able to convince Monte that things will likely be alright….and they are. While there are hiccups in the beginning (Ellie needing to adjust to suddenly being around so many ponies, learning to stand up to bullies, having to work very hard to make friends), Ellie successfully transitioned into mainstream high school, and even met her best friend, Ash. Ponyville’s small town population works to Ellie’s benefit, resident reactions to her quickly devolve from “jesus christ is that a fucking gremlin” to “oh yeah dude that’s no cryptid, that’s just Ellie out for a midnight burrito”. Monte didn’t anticipate this, as he grew up in various big cities where he was always treated as a spectacle. Still, he worries about her chosen field of research. Ellie assures him that she’ll always treat cryptids/undiscovered species with utmost respect and courtesy (and she does), but Monte explains he’s more worried about the academic company she’ll be surrounded with. Ellie’s fellow cryptozoologists are often baffled by her, and some trip over themselves to ask her intrusive questions and beg her for hair/teeth/tissue samples. She’s sometimes mistaken for a specimen herself. Some of her peers plainly do not respect her and even make fun behind her back- Ellie is quite fluent in sign language, but still struggles to articulate her thoughts verbally. Her speech is often broken and child-like, eg. “I go there, find sample, bring here, yes?”, aaaaand this doesn’t do her many favors in a culture of academic snobbery. It makes Monte quite sad, and often furious on her behalf. But Ellie’s a tough kid. The one professor that tried to pluck out a hair sample from her to study- well, she reciprocated, yanking out a tuft from his thinning hairline right in front of his snickering class, and remarking on the awe-inspiring biome of dandruff and hair mites. Ellie of course can’t win every battle with an environment that often sees her as yet another animal to be studied, but she’s working hard to carve out a place for herself, because she loves science and learning and making the world more inclusive. She insists she can survive anything the world can toss her way- and when asked how, by a fretting Monte, she winks and says that she has more than he did growing up, “I have you.” And then Monty tried to suffocate her in a hug and bawled forever, the end

It did! Ellie uses lots of fancy creams and soaps to keep her sensitive skin smooth and healthy, especially since she sunburns easily. She takes good care of her hair, it's just naturally bristly and short, and she feels ridiculous bothering with wigs. She's definitely a theater kid tho
