Added 2020-03-03 23:16:27 +0000 UTCAhuizotl (the species) exhibit curious sexual dimorphism. The males are smaller and brightly colored, which favors them well in wooing mates and fighting off rivals. The females are much larger, with duller coats that provide excellent camouflage in their jungle environment. A male courts a female with songs, dances, and elaborate gifts. Should a mating bond form, the male kicks back to enjoy his new role as flashy trophy husband, and takes care of the pups while the female goes out to hunt.
Ahuizotl (the individual), as the last member of his species, is unfortunately tasked with both hunting for and nurturing his pup, but he doesn't seem to mind so much.
sidenote: Ahuizotl (the individual) has a BIG STUPID HEAD and figuring out how to draw it is some bullshit

2020-03-04 13:10:35 +0000 UTCOh my goodness, what a precious little pup! I especially love his tiny little fangs! And once again, marvelous work on the biology for Ahuizotl's species. It's very reminiscent of peacocks, in that the males have bright, flashy coats to attract females, while the females have dull brown coats to camouflage themselves and their eggs from predators. I can't wait to see more of the father-son duo! <3
