We were flying over the plains toward Nevaria. There were only seven of us. It was myself, Kari, Lin, Siv, Fay, Chloe, and Tora.

The midday sun was high overhead, meaning we cast shadows along the ground as we moved. I looked left, at a deserted farm that looked like it had been abandoned for at least a decade. The roof was in sore need of repair, the walls had moss and vines growing on them, and the front door had rotted off its hinges. Weeds were overgrowing the front yard and the farmland looked withered.

To my right was much the same.

“After Nevaria was destroyed by the Sekbeist Overlord, many people abandoned these farms,” Kari explained to me with a sad smile. “They journeyed into the Endless Desert and disappeared. We sent a few teams in to try and find them back then, but it was already too late. The desert sands had swallowed them whole.”

I nodded once and said nothing.

It was an unfortunate issue I had overlooked, but the people who lived in the outer plains of the city-state known as Nevaria had not been present within the city during the battle and could not be evacuated. They had remained here even after Nevaria was destroyed. I could only imagine their fear, their desperation, as they rushed into the Endless Desert to escape whatever fate they thought awaited them.

“That’s sad,” Siv muttered. Her wings flapped to keep her aloft, though she didn’t need to. I think she did that out of habit more than anything else.

“This princess was one of those who tried to look for them,” Lin said, her expression containing the regret from her failure.

Had it been made from an element like fire, the blast would have pushed buildings away, creating a few traces of civilization. Instead, it looked like everything had been erased.

I didn’t even know how many of the people we had rescued came from Nevaria and how many were from the Northern Plains.

A glance up at the sun revealed it was beginning to dip. I thought for a moment before making a decision.

“We’ve traveled for an entire month without rest. Let’s find a place to sleep.”

“We could still keep going,” Tora said with a small scowl.

I shook my head. “We can, but I would rather be well-rested for when we reach the mermaids. After all, we have no idea what’s in store for us.”

“Even if we can go for months without sleep, it is important to take breaks when we can,” Chloe said. “In the army, you sleep whenever you have the chance because you know it might be months before you get to sleep again.”

The yellow tiles of the slanted roof were cracked in some areas, missing in others. I glanced at the Phoenix statues and saw they were still intact. They were made from the hide of a Molten Fire Salamander, which was a B-Rank Demon Beast that could only be found in active volcanoes.

“I’m surprised this place is still intact,” Lin said.

“I’m not.” Kari looked at the resort with a soft smile, perhaps remembering better times. “This resort is located far from Nevaria, so of course no one would bother with it. The way its nestled into a mountain also hides it from prying eyes. I think they made it this way to avoid people who wanted to harass the guests, but it also serves a defensive purpose.”

“Very few people can find this unless they were actively looking for it,” I said with a nod. “Let’s go inside, choose a room, and get some rest.”

“We should also take this chance to dip in the hot springs,” Lin suggested as we began walking.

“I’m not sure I approve of that idea,” said Fay with a frown.

“No. Lin is right,” Kari interjected. “We should take this opportunity to rest our weary bodies. A dip in the hot springs would help with that.”

Fay did not say anything, but I could tell from her expression that she still wasn’t sure this was a good idea.

We entered the resort. I was surprised to discover that the marble floor was still polished to a shine. Even the potted plants that I remember from my first visit were present and in better condition than I expected.
