Just as I expected, Commander Ashten did not appreciate me bringing a dragon into Midgard. Siv was one thing. A little less than one month had passed since I returned from Westfang Mountain with Kari and Meerand. Surprisingly little had happened during that time. I still hadn’t opened the Nevarian Braves for business and was not accepting new members. I knew this was causing quite the stir among the other sects. Alexis and Rainere had both come to me and asked why I wasn’t recruiting people, but all I could tell them was that I wanted to wait until the Warp Gate was complete and a connection was established between Midgard and Nevaria.

While there were many things for me to consider and worry about, at present, I was not letting myself think about any of them.

There were many empty rooms in the Nevarian Braves’ branch office. Bookshelves lined the walls, which were made from a type of wood instead of stone or stucco. In the center of this room was a circular table with two chairs.

Alexis was sitting in one of those chairs. I was sitting in the other.

Fay had a slight smile on her face as she set down a small but expensive-looking set of tableware. The tray was silver, and the tableware consisted of two small plates, cups, a tea kettle, and two spoons so we could mix milk and sugar into our drinks.

“It probably isn’t as good as the stuff Kari makes, but I’ve made some tea.”

Fay’s movements were awkward and uncoordinated as she poured us some tea, the kettle shaking. Kari was the one who normally did this, but she was indisposed at the moment, and Lin was currently taking a bath to get the smell of sex off her (I had simply washed off using the water element). I was not sure where Siv had gone. She might have been keeping Meerand company, but I suspected she, Raul, and Meerand had gone flying.

“Thank you, Fay.”

I smiled at Fay and touched the back of her hand. Fay turned red up to her ears, but the smile on her face was worth more than a million roses.

After pouring Alexis and me some tea, she exited through the door, leaving us alone.

“Must be nice having four great wives,” Alexis grunted.

“It is very nice,” I agreed. “So, what did you want to talk about?”

“No small talk today?” asked Alexis. “How shocking.”

“You only come to visit us when you want to convince me to start recruiting more members.” I shrugged. “To be honest, it has gotten a little annoying.”

It was an argument she and I had been having for awhile now. A sect could not sustain itself on five members alone. There were taxes that we needed to pay the Council of Six and Midgard Spiritual Knights. Our fees had currently been waved until we began recruiting members, so every day we didn’t was another day the Council of Six got upset at me.

However, I had already made it clear that I wouldn’t recruit anyone from the Northern Plains until I connected the branch office to my main headquarters in Nevaria.

“I know. I know. That’s not why I’m here.” Alexis reached into a pouch at her hip, removed something small, and set it on the table. “I came here to deliver this.”

Curious, I picked up the object as Alexis added two cubes of sugar to her tea, stirred them in, and brought the cup to her lips. The object was a ring. It was unadorned and made from a material that resembled silver. If one discounted the hundreds of complex Runes written into it, this ring would be fairly simple.

I looked up from the ring to Alexis.

“The Warp Gate?” I asked, unable to contain my excitement.

Alexis smirked at me. “Now you don’t have any reason to not recruit more Spiritualists for your sect.” She glanced at the ring in my hand, shook her head, and continued. “Hard to believe such a tiny thing can fit an entire Warp Gate inside. If I didn’t watch them store the damn thing, I’d have never believed it was possible.”

It was impossible to suppress my excitement at this moment. I had been waiting for the Warp Gate to be completed ever since my battle against Dunherr. Without this, I could not connect Nevaria and Midgard, which meant my plans to let these two forces establish a friendly relationship couldn’t begin. It was extremely important that the Northern Plains and Nevaria form an alliance, however. The Sekbeist were still out there. They would come, and we needed to be prepared.

“Thanks for delivering this,” I said softly, sliding the ring onto my middle finger.

Alexis shrugged. “It wasn’t a big deal. I just hope this will satisfy you. The other Six Great Sects are getting antsy. They don’t like that there is such a powerful person who doesn’t seem to have any desire to establish himself in the Northern Plains. It’s even worse now that you’ve gained the dragons as allies.”

I didn’t have much to say about that. The dragons were technically allies, but they were very informal and would not interfere in the affairs of humans. I could only call upon them for favors or in the event of a Sekbeist attack.

“How’s Kari doing?” asked Alexis. “Is she still holed up in that room?”

“Yeah…” Thinking of Kari made me frown a little. “She is still in closed door cultivation, and she probably will be for a while.”

Kari was hoping to break through to the Fourth State of Spiritualism without the use of a Yin-Yang Spiritual Enhancement Pills. The Monster Tamers Guild was still looking for an S-rank light element Demon Beast for us, but I think both of us had given up hope on finding one. Since it looked like there might not be a light affinity Demon Beast with enough power to act as a catalyst for the pill, Kari had begun studying the numerous concepts that made up the light element. Her hope was that by learning more about these concepts, she’d gain enlightenment and break through on her own.

What she was attempting to do was relatively new territory for me. I didn’t know if it could be done. However, I hoped she would succeed. I knew how much not being able to help her family—us—was eating away at her.

“That’s a bit unfortunate,” Alexis muttered, but then she shook her head and stood up. “Anyway, that was all I came here for today. Don’t worry about walking me out. This was my branch office before it was yours. I can see myself out.”

After Alexis left, I gathered Fay, Lin, Siv, Raul, and even pulled Kari out of her secluded cultivation to let them know about the Warp Gate. All of them expressed their excitement. However, that excitement dimmed when I told them I’d be traveling to Nevaria alone. My goal was to get there and back as fast as possible, so I planned on flying day and night to reach it.

Besides, it would be much easier for them to travel to Nevaria once the Warp Gate was established.

I think my wives understood my thinking.

“How long do you think it will take you to reach Nevaria?” asked Kari.

Tilting my head in thought, I made a rough estimation of the distance and calculated how long it would take to cross it based on how fast I traveled.

“I’d say about fourteen days,” I said. “It might be even less if I push myself.”

“Please don’t,” Fay said flatly.

“Fay is right.” Lin nodded. “This princess would like you to return to us as soon as possible, but you need to take care of yourself. That’s more important.”

Siv did not say anything, but the expressiveness in her large, emerald eyes said more than enough.

The four girls, now showered, dressed, and with their appetites satiated, were standing with me outside of the Nevarian Braves branch office. With them was Raul, resting snugly within his mother’s arms. He was staring at me with a kind of confused frown.

“Daddy leaving?” he asked.

“Just for a little while.” Smiling, I reached out and gently ruffled his hair. “Of course, since daddy is going away, he’ll be counting on you to protect Mommy, Big Sis, Sissy, and Aunty Lin.”

Raul pondered this for a moment, his face scrunching up, but it eventually cleared as he gave me a resolute nod.

“Hmm! Raul protect Mommy, and Big Sis, and Sissy, and Aunty Lin.”

I could only smile at my son’s words, and I wasn’t the only one. All my wives looked seconds away from gushing over the child.

We were not the only people present. Well, I wasn’t sure if you could count him as a person, but Meerand was also with us. He stood to one side and looked at me with an expression that made me think of a kicked puppy. A growl escaped his throat the moment he noticed me looking at him.

“No, I’m not taking you with me,” I said.

Another growl.

“Because you’ll slow me down.”

An angry growl.

“Do you want me to hit you?”

The longer I remained, the harder it would be to say goodbye, so after giving everyone a round of kisses (Meerand did not get a kiss), I flew into the air and took off. I set a blistering pace the moment I began flying. I really hadn’t been lying when I said I wanted to reach Nevaria as quickly as possible.

It only took two days to reach the border between the Northern Plains and the Endless Desert. I didn’t even consider what might happen to the environment as I raced across the border and entered vast desert at a hellacious speed. I’d been using lightning to boost my speed, so some of the ground might have gotten a little torn up. I was sure rumors of a lightning bolt traveling across the Northern Plains would reach Midgard eventually.

I briefly considered paying Queen Medusa a visit, but that would slow me down. Without stopping and only briefly resting for three or four hours when I grew tired, I made excellent progress, and it was only about thirteen days after I entered the Endless Desert that I saw the border that led to Nevaria. The change wasn’t abrupt, but it was obvious because vegetation began cropping up here and there. The only places in the Endless Desert where vegetation appeared was near oases, the river, or the ocean.

Because traveling so far so quickly really had tired me out, I found a nice place to sleep underneath the stars. I probably could have found a plantation and asked the owners if they’d let me sleep in a barne, but I had a tent and a futon, so I didn’t really need to. After a good night’s sleep, I was refreshed and once more flew through the sky. I ran into a few people who gawked at me, but no one seemed interested in doing more than staring, so I didn’t let them bother me. That said, they did give me some odd looks when they saw the direction I was heading in, but I paid them no mind.

Finally, after around three years, I had returned to Nevaria. I set down about a kilometer outside the gates and began walking. I didn’t want to cause a stir. However, I soon found out that I needn’t have bothered, for when I reached the gate, I found something extremely shocking.

The gates that led into Nevaria, those massive chunks of steel and wood that were always open during the day, had been completely closed off. To make matters more shocking, there was not a single guard in sight.
