Updates on Projects For Fall / Format Changes for Next Year

Hello everyone!

As usual, I have both good news and bad news. The good news is extremely good.

First, my novel is almost done! I've nearly completed the full first draft and am now powering through the major and minor edits. My hope was to have it done by the Halloween spooky season but I might miss that window. It will be available first on Kindle Direct Publishing and then 90 days after that free to patrons. The KDP contract says I can't distribute it on my own blogs (which Patreon counts as) until it's had 90 days of exclusivity on their platform. This isn't necessarily a bad thing-- this is basically an entirely new branch of my writing career and the harder I can hit the new algorithm of a new platform, the faster I'll be able to grow that branch. The book is titled 'Rose Window', a gothic horror story with a sci-fi setting.

Second, the Lincoln Highway trip is a go. I've driven the Thunderbird a few hundred miles now as a diagnostic and it's held up beautifully. It needs nothing more, the money for the trip is already in the bank, and all that needs to happen is simply to begin. So that starts on October 1st! I'll be back around mid-November. This will result in two extremely large travelogues: a new Real Life Landscapes of Fallout for the East Coast and the Lincoln Highway travelogue. This is going to be the largest, most ambitious trip I have ever taken so fingers crossed for it. The flipside is that I have NEVER done so much research for a single project so I think the resultant travelogues are going to be leagues better than the previous ones. I get better at these every time I have an at-bat.

The bad news is basically that, in the shuffle, I have been unable to complete another large game retrospective *before* leaving on the trip. I have been working diligently on remaking my Dragon Age retrospectives and wanted to have them done, but I ultimately chose to prioritize my novel and travelogues instead at this time. I put a lot of hours into trying to get that video finished, which means it won't have many hours to go when I get back, but October is literally my last chance to be on the road this year and it's important to me to finish while I still can this year. However, this means that in eleven months of payments you the Patrons will have only seen two completed works from me. I worry that this is completely unacceptable.

It's only the size of these projects that are causing such delays. I am trying this year to accomplish the largest, most expensive, most ambitious, most difficult projects I ever have. And it's hurting my consistency, I know. This is why starting next year I am pivoting back to medium length (30-90 Minutes) videos. To do this, I will have to omit the spoken special thanks at the end of the videos. I have promised to do this and fulfilled my promise for nearly an entire decade, but 20+ minutes of thanks at the end of a 40 minute video is wildly unbalanced. I will list all the names of Patrons and thank some out loud on a rotating basis but the thanks/credits structure must change to allow me to return to doing shorter videos.

This is important for three reasons: consistency, creativity, and burnout.

1) Consistency: I want to have one video a month for people. This has been impossible doing projects where the franchise is so time consuming it takes me two months to just play all the games. The stress is tremendous-- failure to deliver makes me miserable, and creates anxiety death spirals where the closer it is to the end the less able I am to just get it done. Managing the size and scope of these projects will allow me to do more of them in greater varieties.

2) Creativity: People are tired of long-form. Maybe not you the reader, but a lot of people. I have received volumes of feedback about how grossly bloated my videos have become and how weary everyone is in general about long-form retrospectives. Their moment has passed, and if I don't adapt to the scorn that's building for them I'm going to get swept away on the tide of people's hatred for the format. If *I'm* not enjoying making them much anymore AND no one else is enjoying them either, that sounds like time for a change. Smaller projects would allow me to cover more indie games and different sorts of game experiences I haven't before. It would allow some air into an extremely stagnant room I've sealed myself in.

3) Burnout: I've made myself a joke and a laughingstock with my inconsistent, self-pitying behavior these past few months. I didn't think it was burnout, but that's precisely what it is: I've lost my confidence in my ability to produce good or meaningful work. I am vulnerable to the massive volumes of negative feedback I've gotten about my work this year. I have tried very hard to produce work that's better than what I had done before, but in the effort I created instead the worst slate of videos I've ever done. It is difficult to confront your own failure as a creator and then just keep going, but that's what I have to do. This year has proven that I have lost my touch when it comes to video game criticism, and if I want to continue, I have to dramatically improve. I do want to continue. I want to honor the respect and money people have given me, and not just shit out a steaming pile of self-indulgent bullshit that I expect people to eat with a smile on their face. I *have* to do better. I have to try harder. And I will.

To that end, I am finishing all the long-form projects I have open. That mostly boils down to remakes/expansions of past videos, which I have been working on off and on for months (and in some cases years). I'll be publishing remakes of the Dragon Age videos, the Fallout videos, and the Call of Duty videos, all wrapped up and united in one giant, revised project. After that the pivot to medium length will begin in earnest.

This has been the most difficult year I've ever had running this channel. Which is ironic (if not a little disgusting) considering how, to show for it, I only have *two videos*. And now that gap in releases is going to grow even larger.

All I can ask for is patience and understanding. You aren't at all obligated to give it. Refunds of your entire contribution are available on demand. It's difficult to navigate on my end, because from my perspective, I have worked harder this year than I ever have. I simply have little to show for it yet. If you're willing to continue to hang on and support the channel, I have better things coming-- more diverse projects, more palatable projects. I'm trying as hard as I can to get there, it's simply that the mountain gets steepest at the peak and this is absolutely the most I've ever tried to take on at once.

I am doing my best. I am trying to honor your donation and do good things with it. Beyond that, I can offer very little. Thank you for your support, whether you choose to continue it or not.

Comments

I was a big fan of your 2022 output myself! But take all the time you need and be kind to yourself.

John Francis

On the contrary, your last three videos over the last year have been some of my favorites so far. Looking forward to the travel content and what you'll do with the shorter format in the future.

Jeffrey Knutsen

I also don't think the long form videos are something to regret having done even if the format is not what you want to be making anymore. I really enjoyed the series retrospective marathon videos, even if I watched them in chunks.

Andrew

Noah, been thinking about you transitioning to some shorter form content and I don’t think that’s actually bad news at all. I think it’ll open you up to covering things that previously may have been too much of a time investment to write about. I’d love to see you cover more artistic indie games in the vein of disco Elysium that have made an impact on the medium, like undertale. Anyway, wishing you the best!

John Lagoni

Praying for a long form Halo retrospective in 2023! It would be the perfect complement and contrast to Gears. If Gears is the subversize and dark interactive anti war movie, Halo is basically the patriotic and enthusiastic 20th century revists to WW2 with chummy heroes and all the right moral notes to affirm it's a good and joyous thing to slaughter without thought. Noah made me reconsider the Coalition games, and while I still think they're stagnant and a letdown after the original GOW trilogy, he got me to willingly play back through them consecutively. I would love to see what he can some up with about Halo, particularly the more thematically juicy 343 games.

Kalash93

2022 is absolutely my favorite Noah year of all. 2 Dark Souls, Gears of War, and more, oh my! If I hadn't gone looking, I'd've never known he considered this yer a failure, this year he's put out a record number of content hours and pushed the format to new heights.

Kalash93

Alas I am weeks late for this. I'm writing him up my own letter. Basically, I come to Noah because I adore the longform content and I adore the intellectual rigor. The only other person I've ever seen produce anything like this is MatthewMatosis, and he's MIA for years. When a new Noah vid comes out, I check my calendar, carve out a free space, cook up a favorite dish, get some treats, and buy a special bottle of a nice drink. It's a celebration, an occasion of an evening with premium content. Only Noah can make me click eagerly on a video about a franchise I've never heard of in a genre I've never touched, watch for 4 hours, and be glued til the end. And when he releases, the longer the better. A special charm of Noah videos is how they marinate the viewer into a slow cook of retrospective and analysis. He has no real competitors. There's Summoning Salt and Joseph Anderson, both thoroughly enjoyable creators in their own right, but neither of them would have treated us to a literary commentary of KOTOR1+2 as a straight play and then defiance of the monomyth. My wish for Noah would be to do a hybrid scheme, where he has shorter videos put out, maybe once every 4-6 weeks, and a big video released quarterly, maybe biannually. I think that would help with his burnout issues by changing what he works on and making things not stagnate.

Kalash93

Your posts this year were downright inspired. You may be right about long format videos, but no need to flagellate yourself in front of your supporters, IMO. Looking forward to seeing your new projects when you are ready to share.

soysauce

coming in months after you made this post, but I just want to say that, while I've been aware of your channel for years, the videos you released this year were so good that I felt compelled to finally dig into your whole catalog of videos and become a patron. Make whatever change you need to feel better about your own work, but I've really, really enjoyed every single thing I've watched, including and especially your most recently released stuff.

Jack Donato

Hey man, been a long time fan of your travel tales & game reviews, so, after years of struggling to build a career, I'm now in a position to become a patron! Take as long as you need on the new projects. I'll be here 🙏

The Shoe

Hey noah, i’m a new patron and I just wanted to say I applied AFTER your anxiety death spiral was already underway you’re your own worst critic. I personally love the content you put out and would rather that you be a happy and healthy person than put out a vid a month. Wishing you the best on your trip!

John Lagoni

Being an old post I'm fairly sure you won't read this comment, but in the off chance you do, I just want to say that I'm sorry you are feeling this way about your recent work. I'd like to echo the sentiments of many other people here and say your work is absolutely fantastic. Is it razor tight? No. It's a bit meandering but it's always in service of larger and more interesting topics. Given that your videos this year have centered around Fromsoftware I'm willing to bet a fair few of your harshest critics were not operating in the best of faith. Especially since you provided such a compelling counternarrative to the prevailing sentiments surrounding the way those games handle difficulty. It's for that reason that I think your Dark Souls video stands as one of the most significant pieces of games criticism I've seen. It's a game series that has been talked into the ground, yet somehow you found a fresh angle on it. I certainly won't mind some shorter content, especially if you can get more joy from it, but I've thoroughly enjoyed every video you've made, and I view you as far and away the best critic on YouTube. I know the negative responses always stick more than the positive ones. But when I look at the comments on all your videos I see thousands of people praising the hell out of what you do. Basically what I'm saying is don't forget about all of us who deeply value your insights and analysis.

Robert Bay

PREACH You've said most of what I was going to rant about. I'm TERRIFIED of never getting another stupid long Noah video, and I'm sick of him beating himself up over what is said in places other than here. Noah, just turn off comments on your videos, please.

Rob Womble

Bro I am happy to pay you without receiving content. I think of it as if I were funding an artist. If a great work takes a year's time, it will have been worth the wait, and the funding. Your writing is incredible; your ideas witty, thought-provoking and inspiring. Besides which most people forget about their subscriptions instead of outright cancelling them, so you're good. I think a lot of your patrons feel the same way as I do, and that you shouldn't really stress too much over this kind of thing.

Connor

Honestly, your videos have done so much to provide an intellectually-satisfying escape into an art medium that feels so much more accessible--unladen by centuries of critique that present a high bar of foreknowledge to entrance--that I can't tell you how much of my sanity it's helped me preserve. I have to count myself among those ready for shorter videos, but I've also watched most of the long-form videos all the way through, so how much do I really mind them? The travelogues are an exception. I mean this as a high compliment: you're an excellent tour guide for a multi-hour journey through the medium of multimedia. We're all patiently awaiting your next videos, and those who can't wait ought to be patently ignored. 10 years you've been doing this; don't let any unearned derision get to you now! Some people are never satisfied; others of us have at least big enough egos to know when we ought to be.

aquaticko

I'm new here, brand new. I found your channel earlier this year, and I adore your content even when I disagree with your prospective/opinions on specifics. I find myself wishing I could discuss video games, books, movies, and such with you, or that I had someone like you in my life with which to discuss them. I just watched your channel update from a year ago. Based on what you said in that video, your support has seen strong growth. I say this because it highlights that others value your work. I can't help but think those who are negative about your work are jealous of your success. As far as changing your format, burnout is real. You have to do what is best for your mental health and for creating an environment you find productive. Your piece on Fromsoft's games alone is EASILY the equivalent of four to six videos on other channels combined into one. Maybe in the future dividing such pieces into more manageable chunks that are released individually and later combined into a whole would allow you to find the "sweet spot" for feeling productive. I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy your travels this month!

Rocki Wingard

Keep up the great work! I find the way you discuss games to be pretty captivating, regardless of video length. Personally, I want you to keep making the videos that you want to make, because that's presumably what you were doing to begin with, and that's what got me hooked. I've always understood patronage as an "I'll help you keep the lights on because I enjoy what you produce" sort of arrangement. I don't feel like you owe me anything in particular. There's a roughly 60-70% overlap in the games I've played and the games you've discussed, and I really love seeing things through your lens. For the games I've played, there are often many things I just never bothered to think about that you thoughtfully and entertainingly deconstruct. Of the games I haven't played, I probably won't get around to playing most of them just as a matter of opportunity cost, and going along with you for the ride lets me experience a lot of the emotional journey I would have missed. Also, when the Resident Evil video came out, my thoughts were, in order: 1. "Sweet fancy Moses, that video is the better part of eight hours long. Nice." 2. "Holy crap in a golden hat, they made how many Resident Evil games?" 3. "That was great, and I can't believe he managed to fit all that into a video that wasn't even eight hours long." 4. *Thinks about the experience of playing umpteen Resident Evil games back-to-back-to-back-to-back* "Godspeed, Noah." And now "It's just not a narratively satisfying place to end up, overcrowding the woods with exploding monster mansions" lives in my head, rent-free.

Least Action Jackson

Pretty much all of your videos are excellent, and the most boring ones are leagues better than the vast majority of youtubers. Even if the output in number of videos is lower than you want, the output in hours is insanely impressive. Other youtubers that I consider to be of comparable quality put out 1/10 or less video hours per year than you do. I'm excited to see this new direction - I hope it does help with burnout, and I think it will be exciting to have more variety. But don't constrain yourself to 90 minutes if you have more to say. Other long-form videos are getting stale because most people don't know how to cut out the fat and focus on the good parts, and often don't have many (or any) good parts to begin with. Your videos have little to no fat (usually NO fat) so don't worry about it.

One of my favorite quotes of all time--follow your bliss. You could not have summed up my feelings better, friend.

SoldierHawk

So, all I want to add here aside from what I already said in my other comment, is that (if its feasible), you should absolutely consider doing the narration of your own audio book. That's not advice I would give most authors, but I've spent years listening to both your regular reading/speaking voice, as well as the comic/accented/character voices you do in your videos on occasion, and you are *genuinely* talented. I've always said you would make an amazing audio book reader. (And that remains true whether it ever happens or not!)

SoldierHawk

Just do what is best for you. Take your time, make shorter videos, take a long break, whatever you need. The priority is your well-being. Also I have to agree with others here... don't know which videos you're talking about, you are still up there with the best when it comes to video game essays/criticism. Thanks for making these great videos :)

Martin Ring

One of my favourite people on the internet is Noah Caldwell-Gervais, because he is a genuine poet and cool dude.

MrBrown

never regretted a dollar sent your way! i dont understand the thought that these latest videos have been your worst either--i have absolutely loved everything you've put out recently. Excited for the new projects coming out whenever they make it there!

eldabys

Yeah, confused as well

Brandon Fraley

Noah, my man, you are, as far as I'm concerned, the best game critic on YouTube. Full stop. It pains me to hear that you're getting negative feedback from so many people. Let's be clear, YOU DO NOT OWE THESE PEOPLE YOUR AGONY. And where do you get off calling your videos this year "disgusting?" They were great. And as long as a country mile. I don't regret a penny I've sent you and I never will. Hope the road trip goes well. I don't know if your route will take you through Wisconsin, but if it does, try the local beer and have a gander at Lake Michigan or Superior.

Dirt Person

(posting a separate reply instead - readability issues) I've mulled over what I would actually want you to take in from what I've written. Instead of words of praise or words of condemnation, I'll simplify things even more. Since last time I wrote that franchise retrospectives are what I want to see and as a result I got heaps more of those - then let's do it this way. What I expect from the channel in the next 12 months: - keeping the same content-hours-per-month ratio (regardless of delivery schedule) - more travelogues (which is probably a non-issue, since you're already planning one) - at least one astonishingly good video - something comparable in quality of insight to the Kotor retrospective (I'm sure you've got it in you - and it doesn't need to be a videogame thing too) - whatever self-imposed rules you happen to put in place to deliver content on pace that you deem satisfactory - I expect these to NOT be trumping over the creative process (if something REALLY needs 2 more weeks to pan out, or 30 more minutes of seemingly rambling meander to get to the point smoothly - then that's what it needs and it should not be stifled by deadlines or the need for shorter video form) Now you have at least a concrete sample of what some part of your long-term audience expects you to head towards. I've been here on Patreon since early 2019 and you throwing a tantrum once in a while does not constitute a reason for divorce, so lay that idea to rest, friend, if it still lingers around your mind.

SGResponse

Since you see it that way, let me put it more bluntly: there is a difference between what I HOPE FOR than what I EXPECT. I expected you to up the production quality (specifically: audio) -> DELIVERED I expected you to release roughly 1hr of content per month with longer videos taking longer to make -> DELIVERED I expected you to do a post where you self-flaggelate for whatever you perceive as slights agains your community about this time of year -> ALSO DELIVERED Expectations thus matched. I had hoped that each video you release would be highly engaging for me -> MIXED BAG (mostly OK) I had hoped that you would not feel like you've disappointed us this year -> DIDN'T HAPPEN I had hoped that the channel would incur a massive influx of new viewers -> SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN APRIL/MAY 2022 I had hoped for some solid franchise retrospectives (posted that hope a year ago or so) -> OH MAN DELIVERED IN HEAPS All in all - we're good. You don't have to be my exact vision of yourself to be true to yourself. Sure it annoys me to no end, that you never seem to get the hint that we love you for what you do and not for whatever you infer we want you to do. But that is the thing with not getting exactly what I wanted or hoped for - because You Are Not My Slave. I don't know what you read in my post, but - mano-to-mano - you might need to disconnect for a bit and reset that negative filter on your glasses. Because, as I have stated for years now: at the end of the day I get what I am paying for - and as long as I do, I will continue to pay. (might edit it with something later - need to get the baby to sleep)

SGResponse

I feel like you probably mean well by this, but this is exactly what I'm talking about in regards to having ruined my reputation and made an idiot out of myself. I am doing the best I can. What messages like this tell me is that I'm not only pissing off most viewers who see what I've done as empty and vapid but also alienating whatever audience I used to have. I would honestly rather you take a refund than continue to begrudgingly hold on expecting me to deliver according to your expectations. That's the whole reason for the refunds, so if I make you angry and upset, there is recourse for you.

Noah Caldwell-Gervais

I continue to have no idea where you are seeing this negative feedback.

Adam Bucceri

I know you will never listen to me. But I pay you to follow your bliss. If you want to make long-form videos, make them. If you want to make short-term videos, make them. The reason I followed you is because you consistently surprised me with things that I didn't think I cared about, so I really wish you'd just follow your bliss and let other people trail behind.

Ferrett Steinmetz

Super excited for remake of CoD retrospective, as I have been going though that series again recently. Keep up the work mate

Damian Ochramowicz

This makes me feel a bit disgusted. Happy about the good news, but fuck, shorter videos? I'm here *because* I get 6h videos twice a year. The idea that you're bad at game criticism? That your last videos have been, *in any way*, worse than the rest of your videos? That's what has me disgusted. If I thought they were some of your best work, are you saying that I'm shit at appraising the quality of game criticism? This entire comment field is saying the same thing, your quality keeps going up, that it's the best out there right now. You're saying it's worthless; one of us is wrong. If you're not enjoying the format anymore, that's a shame, but ultimately please do what you want to do. But, if the reason you feel that way is because you read contrarian youtube comments and ignore the voices of your loyal patreons, think twice about how you go about reading criticism about your work. Sure, we're maybe a bit over-eager to praise you, but... I love the genre of videos you make, I consume it avidly, and you are without a doubt the best at it that I've seen. I've seen nobody else make the kind of content you do, and somehow you do that at the same time as you also offer much more insight and breadth than any other game critic I've seen. If what you want is to mainstream your content, lose that unique voice that has us coming here, I regret to hear that. I'll be giving your shorter videos a shot, for sure, but please understand me when I say that /You could release annual or biannual videos and I would not stop my patreonage, but release one short, shallow video a month and I'll be considering it/. You are beating yourself up over the wrong thing, implementing the wrong fixes to problems that do not exist. You've built an audience who loves long videos — obviously. The thing that has changed is you've grown to the point where your videos are reaching other audiences who do not like long-form videos. If you feel you need to grow further, then yeah, sure, I guess shorter videos is what you need to do, but please understand what you lose in doing so. The people in these comments are the ones who care enough to write long-ass comments about it, but we're not the only ones who want long videos. You have over a million views on a 5 hour and a 7 hour video, those are some frankly insane numbers. Joseph Anderson raked in 4 million views on his four hour long Witcher 1 video. The duration is not a problem, it's the primary feature I'm looking for, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. When I see an upload of more than two hours I get giddy, because I *know* the video has a lot to say if it's that length. If you're upset about your upload speed for your own sense of worth or pride in your work, then take a look at your planning instead, don't do too many large projects at once. Do large projects, those are not the issue, those are the product you are selling. Don't change that product because we you didn't make enough of it, making none will be 100% less. Shorter but more videos are still no long ones, and as I've said, the long ones are what I'm here for. Your shorter videos are great too - Automotive Fantasyland is one of your best videos I think, and probably the perfect length for the topic - and I'm looking forward to videos about smaller indie games, not every video needs to be a beast, but there does need to be beasts every now and then, in my opinion. Anyway, do you even read these? The only people who read your patreon posts are your patreons, and each time you offer refunds or say your upload rate is unacceptable we say we absolutely do not regret giving you money, and that we're perfectly happy with the upload rate. And then next post you say the exact same thing. I guess I can't stop you from thinking it, but please stop insulting us by saying it. I'm gonna go rewatch the DS video now.

Mojken

I'm going to be brutally honest here. It may be painful. It is likely to be toxic. At this point: I don't give a fuck. Ever since your sublime StarWars videos, the engagemend from me has been on the decline. The Resident Evil video being a particular low point for that (probably because I don't care about Resident Evil not one iota and 7 hours of it made me tune out by hour 3 on the several attempts I made at the video). The rest was "mid-tier Noah". Not as thought-provoking and captivating as "top-tier Noah" (Star Wars, God Of War, travelogues..), but still leagues above the likes of Joseph Anderson. Because however trite, meandering and bloated the videos may be - this is still INSPIRED trite, meander and bloat. Long-form has become passe because for most createors all it aspires to be is rehashing the plot verbatim step-by-step while adding a sarcastic quip every 5-10 minutes or so and doing nothing creative beyond that. That is uninspired bullshit-peddling that turned me away from other long-form creators. And your content being far away from that cesspool is what's unique about your long-form. It is never tied down to the game's chronology; It will jump forward and backward, carried by whims of the conversational tone; It will omit some HUGE chunks of plot and plot twist (example: Boy's name in Dad Of Boy), focusing on seemingly irrelevant details, that play into a larger theme; It will turn a game duology retrospective into a mid-century book review ffs! Seriously, who the fuck ever does that?! Where else would I get this kind of eclectic content?! That's the INSPIRED part that draws me in! What I have come to expect from this channel is 60-90 minutes of solid content per month released on an irregular basis plus a painfully self-pitying patreon post every year or so. You have not disappointed on either front for years now. I have already stated my thoughts on how your self-pity is not warranted, on how your cries of "oh I suck cause I don't deliver" are unfounded (9 hours of content this year matches expectations perfectly) and how you are the best long-form creator out there. I've done so several times under these posts. Yet, you have always ignored me. You don't give a fuck about what I said, because you never seem to internalize one iota of the positive things I tell you. You roll back into your hole of sadness and self-inflicted misery, wallowing on the dumbest, most demeaning criticisms you get from people, who have an attention span of a fucking hamster and can't muster even a tiny modecum of focus for more than 60 seconds at a time. Basically - the console crowd as envisioned by the Crysis Designer guy (whatever his name was). Fuck that shit. I'm gonna call it as I see it: attention-seeking. Fine. You've got my attention. What do you expect now? You expect validation of your virtues? Confirmation of your self-derogatory conclusions? Well guess what: you will get neither. Instead I'm going to posit a theory: what if - and hear me out on this - what if the problem with your burnout isn't that you're not releasing often or that the things are long form. Maybe - just maybe - it's because you've decided to do a MULTITUDE OF RE-RECORDING PROJECTS AT THE SAME TIME? Food for thought, eh? I know - it's a bit far-fetched - blaming burnout on the fact, that all ongoing projects are retreads of old ground - I mean it's practically impossible to have burnout on those kinds of projects, right?... ... Told ya, it's going to be toxic. On a closing note: I sarcastically hope that your declaration of a major pivot to shorter-form videos will be put into practice in the same way as all other pivot declarations you've put forth thus far - that is: a semi-earnest attempt with a soon-to-be fallback to something that's "more Noah". Because I bet that at the end of the day I bet you still won't be able to cut your thoughts short of a conclusion if there happens to be more than 60 minutes of thought that a game inspires in you. I bet you won't be willing tu cut two games apart if speaking about them in tandem will provide more insight into the theme you're exploring. I bet you won't rush a video if you feel like it's unfinished, just because "muh deadline". I bet you will not sacrifice creative integrity on the altar of some self-imposed bullshit rules. I bet you won't change enough for me to stop watching your content.

SGResponse

Love your content and its been the same exceptional quality this year as previous. I for one am happy to patronise you while I am able to make whatever you feel most excited by and compelled to share your thoughts on. Keep on keeping on :P

Cerys

I've loved your long form videos, but completely understand the extreme stress and huge undertaking they are! Your mental and physical health are priority number 1. Without them not only do you suffer, but so does your art and passion. I appreciate all your efforts and will certainly stay subscribed and will be looking forward to your travelogues! I think medium length videos are a good move. More variety less stress and commitment to one project. Perhaps you only do one long-form video a year? Whether it be a travelogue or topic/game deep dive. Of course writing is a huge undertaking and no longer having long-form videos is a worthy sacrifice! Burnout is serious, definitely take a step back and have some you time. Come back with a new format and kick ass! I loved your souls videos recently, and they did inspire me to started Elden Ring and replay Dark Souls. Always remember, you improve and enrich our lives through the media you create. And I appreciate you and your efforts to make my life a little better! But don't sacrifice your life and happiness for ours, that will result in everyone being worse off. Stay healthy and happy Noah! Thank you for all your effort and hard work!

RogueThrax

Your videos in the last year were fantastic, but I'm happy that you figured out changes to be happier and avoid burnout

Sela

+1 to satisfaction with the quality of the work you've been putting out. I really enjoy long form perspectives on games I've spent a lot of time with myself. Also surprised that they're out of fashion or whatever; quality long form retros is quite underserved, as far as I can find. While we're doing recommendations for shorter games to cover, agree that Outer Wilds is a gem and right up in your wheelhouse. Also want to through in Grime; terrible name but it's a (mostly) tight soulsvania whose world is pretty much tailor-made for your predilection towards bleak but beautiful. Give it a go!

Sean Hansen

So much good news! I'm so happy the trip is happening, and about the novel. It's a bit sad the credits are changing(though I agree they should) as they felt really special. I, for one, am so proud and satisfied with what you put out this year. You do long form essays better than anyone. If we're talking about bloat on youtube, 5 hours of your stuff might need a 5 minute trim while others could clearly have cut hours but decided to drag their shit out for the algorithm. Thatsaid, I love the fact youre trying to take care of yourself and I'll take a video of yours of any length. And I dont know if youll read this, but a recommendation of mine would be The Outer Wilds. It's a shorter, beautiful game that I would love your thoughts on. Take care!

Arvid Karlström

A gothic horror novel from Noah? Pump it right into my veins, man! Though I will wait for the patron release, because I don't like giving money to Amazon these days...

Mikhail Aristov

I was going to echo the comments of pretty much everyone else in the comments but they’ve already thoroughly complimented your work, so instead I’ll just say, love you Noah keep up the good work.

Aindriú O’ Cearbhaill

I just wanna chime in and say that I thoroughly enjoyed both of your videos this year. You did an extreme amount of coverage and in-depth analysis on the from software games and they are so very interesting and enjoyable. You may be right about the zietgeist shifting away from very long-form essay videos, but I treasure every single one that you and other writers I follow release. Please take the time and effort to keep doing the work you do, I feel like you may have gotten overly negative responses to the from software video pairing because of how toxic the fan community for that developer can be. Eagerly looking forward to your travels and the complimentary videos of the Lincoln Highway history and the Fallout East Coast locations. If you want any food recommendations on the sterech of the trip in and around Philadelphia I can recommend some places (I've lived around both ends of route 1/roosevelt blvd. in the city.

Joshua Aslan Smith

i'm so excited for the travelogue and the book! i personally love the long form videos and there's not a lot of people doing it. i think it's important for people (especially young people) to develop their capacity for critical reflection and focus, something that new media platforms on the internet seems intent on destroying,. although if it's less stressful for you, i certainly wouldn't mind shorter videos. maybe a work around could be episodic series - shorter videos that gets compiled into longer ones?

zhangster

I disagree, I think your output has been exceptionally high quality this year. Really, for me, I think the start of the pandemic was when you really found your stride - starting with the Last of Us video, everything you've made has been pure gold, to my mind. If one video a month isn't sustainable, I'd be happy to just keep paying to let you make whatever you see fit.

Sam Weinstein

Normal-length videos! Boo! lol that's ok, not surprising at all & I'm pleased that there was even a period where long-form was tolerated by the over-worked & under-educated gam3r hordes. It's the smart move on your part. Have a good time doing The Long Drive!

TheSoulJames

I appreciate the update and echo what others are saying reassuring about your content and staying offline a bit. Personally, I love your long forms - your Red Dead video is still one of my very favourite bits of media in recent years but I get the need for more varied video types. Super looking forward to the travel video and novel!

David Jackson

Man it sucks that the internet is doing you dirty like this. I won't pretend to know what's going on in your personal life but everything you're making on YouTube has been killer. Your work is better than ever. But you've cultivated an audience that follows you specifically for things that YouTube's analytics will disparage you for. I hope your burnout isn't being contributed to by that fucking hell-site's bullshit productivity propaganda. Because it's killing your contemporaries.

Optimus Crimes

Super exited about the travelouges! My favorite videos were your last ones after all :) while I do enjoy your long-form videos a lot it would be interesting to see you do some short ones on indies (behind the frame!) so if that is something you would like to do I Will also love watching it. Hope your book turns out good as well! Glhf with everything and thanks for updates!

Erik Eklundh

Looking back at the catalog, it would appear to me that your work has gotten better and better each year, with this last year being your best. Your view-counts seems to suggest the same... The only thing wrong here are the shit heads with nothing better to do than try to make themselves feel less insignificant by trying to take down a genuine talent and sage a notch.

Brandon Fraley

Your dark souls video got a glowing review from Dan Olson (folding ideas). When Dan Olson gives you a glowing review, it really, really deserves it. I can see why you want to return to shorter form content however and I look forward to it. However, and not to cast aspersions, I've heard the "once a month" talk from a lot of creators before. I've seen it turn into a sustainable model exactly once, but if you feel that you'll be up for it, I'll take it. I'll also happily take once every two or three months. I'm here because you show me things I haven't seen before or cause me to consider games in different lights than I have in the past. I'll wait for that as long as it takes.

Arthur Freyn

Brandon Fraley

I see FOUR videos, for what its worth (not 2) and they have each been absolutely amazing and especially epic. I'm so sorry people are sending you negative feedback. I simply do not understand it. You produce some of the very best work (overall THE best work) in the field. Please don't think you need to play to the lowest and least appreciative audience. You have fans, and a lot of them by the looks of it. We just want to keep supporting you so that you'll keep doing what you have been doing. Evolve at your own pace and in whatever direction you see fit. But let me be so absolutely clear; Your output this last year has been top notch, and I suspect the best single year's worth of material since you've started.

Brandon Fraley

Super excited for everything coming down the pipeline and have been thrilled with the last year. I’ve always wanted this contribution to go towards a creator I believe in, and you have always been that. Thank you Noah and I can’t wait to see all the new things you’ll be sharing with us.

Dr. Crime

I personally think your two videos this year have been the best work you’ve produced so far!!!

Andrew Walker

I'm sending you patreon donations to support your artistic vision, whatever it is. I see that you have released FOUR videos this year (Automotive Fantasyland, Gears through the Years, Dark Souls Trilogy, Souls Inheritors) and I have enjoyed all of them. I just rewatched Souls and Souls Inheritors last week and I was absolutely impressed and very happy with them. Excited for your novel, excited for long-but-not-as-labour-intense videos. Have a good trip! You deserve it.

James Woodman

Noah, i think it's time for a social media blackout. You know saying anything on Souls games brings out the worst type of troglodyte. And yet you clearly can't tune out the people who hate on what has been, yes, some of your best work to date. Not your worst. Your best. "But what if i miss important feedback?". Be honest: What has been the ratio of useful to soulcrushing for you? I'd wager it's not very good. You don't have to subject yourself to it. If you're worried about specific topics, get some sensitivity readers. Joe Public is not useful for stuff like this either. And it's a sentiment that's mentioned here often, but i also don't care about the time you take to make videos. Honestly, i forget you exist until a new video pops up in my feed and i consider it money very well spent. So keep on keeping on, porter, stay away from Twitter and Youtube comments and enjoy your trip!

Dios

Congrats on your book and your upcoming trip! I honestly hope that you choose to create content that makes you happy and doesn't make your life worse. I highly value the content you create and each video feels like mini a philosophy lesson and actually causes me to consider aspects of my own life and how I live it. To me, that is fully worth my monthly contribution and I will continue to support you, but please don't wreck your life over it. Best of luck on your trip and safe travels. I'll be pantiently awaiting your next upload!

Ian Wieserman

I have zero complaints about output this year, and neither do any of the friends I discuss your work with. The most important thing, however, is that you do what you will find most fulfilling. Enjoy your trip - it's been a time coming and you've earned it.

Bryn Davies

The only reason I skipped your latest videos is because I haven't played those series yet. Once you've covered a game in your exhaustively detailed way there's nothing else to discover. I like to hear your analysis after my own experience. Don't listen to the naysayers! Your new travelogue plans sound great, especially another tracing the Fallout routes. Can't wait to read your novel. Be proud, Noah, not apologetic.

Ralph Rainwater

As for the quality of your recent output, your Souls/From videos are legit masterpieces in my book. Your Dark Souls video was linked to me by a friend a little time before the Souls inheritors video, and the strength of those two videos alone convinced me to start backing you. But if you don't wish to take my word for it, try looking at praise coming fromthe prominent Soulsborne content creators in the comments. :)

Galeforce

Please make the form of video that you yourself find creatively fulfilling.

Galeforce

I've thought the videos this year have been great, I don't think there's been any decline in quality. Regardless I hope I speak for many when I say we're here for whatever you've got <3 and hope your trip is great!

jtrissel

Noah: Your most recent videos are your best. There has not been any decline in quality, and we're all excited for whatever comes next. Just take care of yourself!

Dennis Scott

Like most here, I thought your videos this year were great. And that's from someone who's meh on Dark Souls and really disliked Elden Ring. I hope analytics aren't getting to you. I'm happy with your videos and look forward to whatever comes next.

Joe Mitchell

Don't beat yourself up. The videos this year have been fantastic.

Soupkitten

Sorry about the tough time you/your country are having - I know it doesn’t help much but I wish you all the best. I’ve donated to Ukrainian causes too.

Ben Murray

Dude my jaw dropped after reading that you think your output this year has been in some way inferior! The Souls videos were amazing, as all your videos are. I agree with dropping the patreon thanks though, it was kind but I doubt anyone here subscribes because of it. I was surprised to hear that people are getting sick of long form videos, but it makes sense I guess. Certainly 5 hours is too long to consume in one sitting, so 1-2 hour videos would solve that - and have benefits for you - so it seems like a win win! Enjoy your road trip, hope it all goes well bud!

Ben Murray

Those upcoming projects sound great! I'm looking forward to them. I also think smaller videos on more indie games would be cool too. The one thing I want to say though is that while you feel you've created your worst work this year, I think the two From Software videos are among your best. I think you're still growing as a critic and continually improving. Hopefully a shift in how you create these will make you feel better about them too. All the best!

Dave

I for one will keep tossing my change in the tip jar- as an indie dev starting out I eat this stuff up and absorb as much as I can. Do what you need to do to stay in the game and I can't wait for the next series!

Rick

Noah, as a long time fan and fairly recent Patron, I have to object that this year has seen your worst work. The Soulsbourne videos were excellent, I have watched them multiple times and have recommended them to others. To echo the thoughts of many of my fellow patrons, I am a fan of your content and trust you to make what you want to make and what you find interesting. I'm not worried about the regularity of your schedule, your writing is of high quality and scale that takes time to realise. Further to that, you have put out enough content to equal multiple uploads of other channels, you have definitely not been slacking off. I am aware of the negativity you've received over the Souls videos, which does suck, and I can completely understand that must take the wind out of your sails. I urge you to take care of yourself and not focus to much on the negative stuff wherever possible. The Souls community has a lot of people with //opinions// and you went into the video knowing that, it is not representative of people who are engaging with your work in good faith. I support your decision to pursue some shorter content, if only because it will be a fun change of pace and I wish you safety out there on the road. Look after yourself and try not fashion a stick to beat yourself with where possible. Your work is good, I wouldn't be paying for it if it wasn't.

Nick Hurd

And here I was thinking the last few videos were your best so far. You’re the boss but I just can’t help but disagree with you here.

David Allen

Great news about your novel, looking forward to picking it up. I've really enjoyed your output from this year and don't feel at all like it's unacceptable, the hours of work on display have been well worth the time. I know I'm going to continue to support and enjoy your content in whatever way you choose fit to create and release it. Take care of yourself above all else and enjoy the road trip, looking forward to the travelogue.

Epitome22

I'm here for whatever content you want to produce. I don't think there is a video of yours I don't enjoy listening to. Long form, short form, if you find it interesting enough to write about I would love to hear it.

Justin Miller

Noah, I remain an enormous fan of all your content, including what you've released this year! I understand the need to shift back to medium form, but I hope that (time and life permitting) you'll perhaps occasionally release something epic again, even if it's your last priority and we get one every five years or so. In the mean time, I'm looking forward to the Travellouges and the other new work!

Spirit of 70

It really does sound like you've reached a better place with your mental health, even just from the tone of this post alone. And that's of course the most important thing to make progress on

David S

So happy to hear about your novel Noah! Can't wait to give it a crack. Looking forward to your next travel videos as well, those are my favorites of your content. The massive amount of work you put into them is always evident.

David S

Noah, I myself very much enjoy the longer-form video content. The multi-hour extravaganzas are a fantastic way to spend the day (often several days as I like to rewatch them over and over and over again in several cases), and bring clarity and wonderful details to games that I never would have even thought about playing before. I played through Dark Souls because of your video. I played Surviving Mars, Frostpunk, and Horizon: Zero Dawn because of your videos. You make great video essays, and if you want to switch to shorter-form content to avoid burnout, sure, do that, that's a good idea; if you're doing it because you think whiny commenters should dictate what you do? I disagree with that. Also, yeah, 20 minutes of reading supporters is a lot, just showing them on screen is fine. I got you to say "boogers" repeatedly for a few videos right now, so I'm happy.

BoogersBoogersBoogersBoogersBoogersBoogers

Personally, I think the focus on "number of videos/time" works against the point of patreon support; the entire reason im supporting content creators on patreon is to get away from that assembly line method of production and allow some room for experimentation, so its interesting to me that people get mad at you over such an arbitrary indicator of productivity (especially given how to me your last 2 videos were really really amazing, but apparently im in the minority in having that opinion going by your post? truly wild.) Other than that, all for shorter videos if it means you have more fun doing them, your videos are always so insightful and fun to watch! Also, a lot of your self-critical statements seem un-merited based on your output. I dont really know you as a person but your work is excellent man. good luck!

FunBunny21

As far as I can tell, an hour of video per month quota is something channels much bigger than yours struggle to hit. Only this year, you have dropped over 13 hours of content, if you ask me you have more than earned the break.

Kamil

tbh, I disagree with your assessment of this year being the one with the worst slate of videos, because I think your souls videos are absolutely amazing. Obviously, I support your decision to switch to a different format, if you feel like that's going to be better for you, but I think your long form stuff is hands down the best in the game and I appreciate your work so much. I live in Ukraine and this year hasn't been particularly kind to us, but your videos consistently cheered me up and helped me carry on through this mess, I've watched your souls videos like 20 times each. Seriously, thank you for your work. I'm exited for what you'll make next.

Shieldwall

I've enjoyed your longform videos this year, but if they're burning you out I think it makes complete sense to pivot to shorter indie stuff. I'm also really excited for the Lincoln Highway trip! I love your travelogues. The novel sounds interesting too. Speaking as a long term patron, I'm very happy with what you've done so far this year, and with everything you have coming up :)

Mire

Perfectly said. Hear hear.

SoldierHawk

Been a long timer watcher and now have a job where I feel comfortable contributing. Your content is always something I look forward to, even if it's just a couple videos. The Travelogue stuff also counts in my opinion and even if the product isn't finished by the end of the year, doing the trip is still making hay for a future day. Shorter videos might also provide an interesting challenge and add some fuel to the fire for your game videos. Cheers man.

Wash Manblast

I'm totally happy with whatever you feel comfortable/called to produce. I've always been a fan of the long vids, myself, but I totally can see how they could be just...the biggest drain, as you've described. I love all of your work, and will happily be here to continue supporting and enjoying whatever you do. Your are a wonderful creator and brilliant writer, Noah, even if it doesn't feel that way from the inside. We're all here because it's the truth. Have a safe and wonderful trip! I hope it's everything you want it to be, and more.

SoldierHawk

Said to hear there's been negative feedback, because the videos from this year are so, so good! Looking forward to reading the novel.

Wilmer Tjernberg

Hope all is going well man. For what its worth I do very much enjoy your long form content. If it's your call then I support your decision but don't let others influence your creative endeavor. You've given clarity on a lot of games I enjoy. Glad to hear about the upcoming novel and road trip and however much time you need to make those projects happen I'm here for it :)

Clive Cousland

This sounds like a fantastic development! As someone who can also go on (and on, and on) about a subject that interests me, I've enjoyed your long-form videos and can empathize with why you want to do them. But making a larger number of shorter videos strikes me as a good idea. One thing I've missed a bit from the older days of your channel is when you'd cover some fascinating oddity like Clive Barker's Undying, and I'd love to see more like that. EDIT: Apologies. You actually are still covering a lot of older/obscure games. Somehow I misremembered those as all being from earlier in your career. Anyway, I think your plans are great! Looking forward to the travelogues!

WellTemperedClavier

Hi Noah! I tend to be a "silent supporter" and usually don't comment on videos or post, but for that one, I had to. First of all, there is nothing that I wish more than for you to do better. I'm super excited about your various projects, not because I know you will produce fantastic content out of it, but because I know you will have some level of fun bringing them to completion. I will be waiting for your next thing with just as much enthusiasm than before. However, here's the thing, and I promise I say that with the kindest of hearts; when you say that you "lost your touch when it comes to video game criticism", it is absolutely revolting and I cannot leave that unaddressed. If you're unhappy about the quantity of finished projects, sure, I don't mind but whatever. But if you're talking about the quality of said videos, then you're plain wrong. I have watched every single video of your channel, and there are a bunch I watched multiple times, like the Neverwinter Nights, Resident Evil, Half Life revisited, and many others. And I can say with utmost confidence that your videos and analysis keep getting better and better. You're a fantastic writer, and although I would selfishly enjoy more quantity, you're one of the few people on the platform that produces video that makes me jump of excitement when I receive the notification. And that is solely because the quality kept increasing, again and again. Truth is, I would not even mind if your future videos weren't as fantastic as the ones that just came out. I'd welcome it, even, if that meant decreasing the pressure you're under. Best of luck for the trip, and for everything else. You're the one that knows best about how to handle things for the future. But please don't think you've lost your edge, because you absolutely haven't.

Sebastien Decuyper

You'll continue to be an inspiration for me, know matter what you think. You're hard on yourself, but I hope whatever improvements you make in the coming year allows you to hold a better self image. Your videos have never dropped the ball in your supporters eyes. I think everyone here is excited for your new videos whether they're longer, shorter, or mixed. I'm personally stoked for the Fallout revision! Thank you for continuing to make videos. It's always gonna bring a smile to my face to see you upload.

Mello May

I feel I speak for a not insignificant portion of your audience in saying that we just genuinely enjoy hearing you talk about games no matter the specifics of the format. You've given me, personally, a whole new vocabulary and outlook with which to annoy my friends with when talking about games and the various ways they can be compelling or terrible. I truly don't care what the video format is because I know I'll love it regardless. You're excellent at what you do and I hope you find your confidence again. Cheers.

Alex Taylor

I've genuinely enjoyed the 5-hour epic deep dives, but if the 30-90 minute videos are healthier for you on the production side I'm all for them!

Tobasco da Gama

Please be gentle with yourself.

Benton Smith

For what it's worth, I think the last year of your work is the best you've ever done. A pivot to short form videos is fine by me, but there are plenty of us supporters who love how in depth the longer videos can get. Do whichever style makes you happy, and I'll come along for the ride.

CJCW

Excellent to hear from you, friend, and wonderful to have a road map for the future. Looking forward to your excellent content however you can create it in a way that satisfies you. Over the past month or so, I have devoured your entire backlog and grown to appreciate your thorough, insightful, ever-honest takes on all things, and I eagerly anticipate getting to see more of the world through your thoughtful lense.

DannyPangos

Okay, Patreon's chat messed me up. I assumed enter would be newline. Basically, what I'm going to say is that I am ALWAYS stoked to see a new long-form video from you. I sit down and I watch it and I ingest everything you say. I watch your long videos multiple times, and now I'm to the point where I only look for videos that are >1 hour. (even out of other youtubers) The passion that you use to gush into the videos and seeing you create and listen to talk about what you did or didn't enjoy? This stuff is my jam, and if you move to sub-one-hour videos again, the tone and the pitch of the channel will not be the same. I will continue supporting you so long as I enjoy your videos and you put some measure of passion into them, but I always look forward to seeing more from you. Waking up one day to find that you've posted a new long-form video is always like a little outside-of-christmas-treat. It's impossible to say "don't listen to the complainers", because I know how it goes, as whining and complaining takes the wind out of the sails, but you need to constantly remind yourself that the human brain is tuned to focus on and see the negativity. As someone who's dealt a lot with anxiety and depression, the weight that hangs around the neck of putting up our own high standards of goals only exacerbates the anxiety. At a certain point, you just need to be honest about what you're working on and start telling yourself "it'll be done when it's done."

Zoru22

Don't be too hard on yourself for the long videos this year when you wanted to make shorter ones. You were also learning to work with editors and new tools. It takes time to break in many new habits and practices. Have a good trip!

Megabyte01

Sounds like a good plan. I agree that prioritising the book and travelogue was the right call. New experiences will only help all avenues of your creative output, so swing for the fences champ :)

Charlotte

I can't state enough how much I enjoyed your longform Souls content, or how entertained I was by going through your video game discussions one at a time on YouTube. Please keep on keeping on: I'd support you in whatever direction you choose to take your work, it'd undoubtedly be wonderful. That said, I do love the long-form approach, I find it relaxing and soothing, something to watch with friends and discuss. It sparks conversation, and really encourages one to think about the media we enjoy. Thank you very much for all you've done, I feel I've gotten more than a fair amount of value on my monthly contribution.

Whiskey

Enjoy your road trip Noah! No matter what the video is I can't wait to see that bus of yours in my youtube notifications again!

Nick Coyle

For years I've considered your channel one of the finest repositories of gaming criticism and analysis out there, and it's basically the only youtube channel I'll recommend to everyone regardless of their background or interest in gaming. While I still enjoy long-form video content, I understand that it requires a huge investment of time and energy to produce and I don't want you to feel pressured by that format if you no longer feel it's healthy or sustainable for you. Regardless of the length or frequency of your videos, I know that every time I see a new upload to your channel, it will be of extremely high quality. Have fun on your journey!

prototype27

Sorry to hear that this year has been so disheartening for you. From where I'm sitting, you've been putting out great content in a format I love all along, and I will continue to support you if you choose to transition to virtually any other creative outlet. Sorry to hear about the discouraging feedback you've been getting - take care of yourself first, even if it means stepping away for as long as you need in order to feel rejuvenated.

Kurt Richardson

The quality of your work is always superb, Noah. Like many creatives, our tendency to be sensitive adds that delicate touch to our art. It also makes us vulnerable to so much of the negative emotional drain that comes from putting so much of ourselves out into the world. Please take care of yourself.

Matt Saturn, The Beat Crusader

Your two soulsborne videos are literally two of the best videos I have ever seen. Your ability to capture the almost indescribable emotions those games inspire was masterful, honest, and sincere. I cherish them. You should do what you want, but please take something away from knowing that you have touched my life and moved me with your work this year.

Matthew Shulman

fwiw, your content this year has been my favorite so far. I can tell all the hard work that has gone into it. You're my favorite video game writer for the amount of "you" that I get from your videos. Whatever you need to do to maintain your sanity and keep writing, that's what I'm here for.

Josh Ferguson

Yeah Noah, I gotta say that I value your long-form content far, far more than the short form content.

Zoru22

For what little it may be worth, I've always considered what I donate to you to be a great investment, regardless of the frequency of your output. I genuinely love all your videos, and look forward to the long, medium, and short ones. Thanks for everything you do, and I hope the shift to medium-length stuff helps you feel less frustrated with your work - while I've always enjoyed it, it's never any fun to work on a project that's wearing you down.

Evan Barnett

Thank you for the update!! The two Souls videos are truly tremendous works of criticism, and I've already watched each of them in their entirety multiple times. Your comments on Sekiro, in particular, really helped me understand my own complicated feelings about that game.

Stephen Grapes

I love your videos of whatever length and am looking forward to what you produce next. Please don’t let the negativity get you down; the negative voices are always the loudest. A lot of people admire your work because you’re one of the best in the business. Have fun on your trip.

Daniel W. Leahey

Noah, I say this with love: your Patrons are here because we support you regardless of your content output. We're Patrons because we recognize not only the inherent value of your work, but your inherent value as a person, as well. You need not feel guilty, or pressured, for anything that you do -- the content-making decisions you make, the ways you choose to spend your money and time, any of it. I admire your commitment and self-reflection, and I'm happy to support you even if you don't make content -- I support Lindsay Ellis for the same reason. You don't owe us self-flagellation on Patreon, Twitter, or anywhere else. I know very well, personally, how easy it is to put pressure on yourself (no one puts pressure on me like I put pressure on me), and I promise you, here, on YOUR Patreon, it is not needed. Wishing you peace of mind and good health Noah!

Dan DeFord (The Deekins)

Take all the time you need and enjoy your trip, can't wait to read the novel!

Steve B

The remake of your Half-Life retrospective was fab. Can't wait to see the others when they're eventually published. 𝘌𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 CoD.

Omnishambles8

Can't wait to see your next work, super excited to hear about the Dragon Age retrospective remake!! Safe travels and thanks for what you do.

Sav

Bro, you're doing a great job.

Jeremy Gascoine

Excited for the travelogue. Also, is there a chance we will get an audiobook version of the book? It’s nice to enjoy a story on a long drive.
