Trip Delay Until June 23rd

Hello everyone! I had intended to leave this May on the Lincoln Highway trip, but I've been forced to push it back by a couple unpleasant circumstances.

1) I got Covid. I'm glad, at least, that it happened before I left and not during or, least of all, before. It's been mild enough for me but there needs to be a few weeks in between this and leaving on a winding journey through multiple states and isolated communities.

2) Gas shot up to $5 a gallon. I had set aside saving enough for gas around $3, but the way the price of gas has kept going up against the fact that 12-18 MPG is all I can reasonably expect from the Thunderbird has significantly increased the cost of the whole thing. I've taken this extra time to do a lot of deep repairs (water pump, timing chain, power steering pump, radiator and lines, etc.) with help from my friend Mitty, who has far outpaced me in the program and has been working as a professional mechanic for several months now.

3) I need to finish the Bloodborne/Sekiro/Elden Ring video. In trying to figure what was the lesser evil, delaying the trip or delaying the video, I was leaning towards finishing the video and delaying the trip even before I got Covid and it forced my hand. The video will be out this May, towards the end, and I think that's important to happen before I leave on a trip where I can't finish any other projects. I'm deeply concerned, as I'm sure are many of you, about lack of output so far in 2022. The Dark Souls video represents five hours of content about three games, which is *okay* output, but with this next video done in May that'll put it up to eight or nine hours of content about six games across five months, which is much better return on Patron investment. It's never out of my mind how much responsibility it is to be paid the way I am, and giving value for what people pay me is a huge goal.

I know that this trip has been pushed already, but the problem is that it's a larger undertaking than I've ever attempted at a more complicated time than I've ever tried to accomplish something like this. That feels like it makes it more urgent, to get a very deep and unusual picture of the country at such an extremely unusual time. In the reddit thread about the recent Dark Souls video I did, there was a guy arguing that the travel content I do is a scam because "it takes no effort to point the camera out the window of a trip he was already going to take", and I want to try and explain that this is not the case.

This next series of travel videos has taken years of planning, and planning exclusively for the production of video content. I am not vacationing for no purpose and then trying to get my patrons to foot the bill. This has been a deliberate, slow, extremely meticulous process even getting to the point where I know where I'm going and why I'm going there. So to better describe the projects:

-The Lincoln Highway video will be a historically-minded travelogue about the very first transcontinental motor route, retracing the original 1913-1918 configuration as closely as possible across interstates, highways, biways, surface streets, alleyways, and dirt roads. It is a matter of thousands of miles and thousands of turns. I have had to completely transcribe the directions myself to create an offline copy. It's going to be ~4 hours of total video, going west to east, present to past, and trying to incorporate both everything I researched and everything I don't know yet I'm going to find. This trip, this project, has been my obsession for several years running. It's neither a scam nor a lark, it is the absolute culmination of the skills I've developed for planning these sorts of trips and I would not have delayed it if I could possibly help it.

-East Coast Landscapes of Fallout. The west coast video is by far my most popular travelogue, and as a Fallout fan first and foremost it's hugely important to me to do the other half of this project. This project, more than the Lincoln Highway one, is why I have to put away so much money to afford the projects. I can't camp every night in Boston or Washington D.C., there are more traditional trip expenses than I've had to deal with previously where I just drove my hotel everywhere. However, I think it will be worth it-- I've also done over a hundred hours of pure research for this project, so while much of Fallout 3, 4, and 76 has no bearing on what the actual places look like I've found dozens of alternate, comparative locations that do resemble what's in the games. This is going to be more work navigationally and a larger amount of driving by a huge margin than the last Landscapes of Fallout project.

I understand that to many, the Dark Souls video also represented a decline in quality-- that it was overly repetitive, bloated, and tonally unpleasant. I have had many people write to me to tell me they're unsubscribing from my channel or won't be watching again based on the downward trend they felt the video indicated. It is not my intention to artificially bloat my videos. They've been getting longer, yes, but only on account of trying to be more ambitious with them-- to cover more games, like with Resident Evil, or to cover in detail games I found very multifaceted, which was my intention with Dark Souls. The next video I'm making more of an effort to trim and edit the script, although it's still going to be similarly long just because of my interest in the games. I am trying my best to listen to and respond to trends of thought regarding my output, and it was a very strong trend for people to feel the Dark Souls video was a major disappointment and a harbinger of greater disappointments to come. I am working diligently to try and insure this won't happen, and keep the quality at a level commensurate with everyone's level of support.

As a final note, I'm also making steady progress on my horror novel project. I don't want to put a date on anything, but it's shaping up into an actual book-- around 80k words so far. It is a one-off horror/sci-fi project with no sequels or lingering hooks, based on both my affinity for and criticisms of Haunted House novels of the '60s through the '90s, like Richard Matheson's Hell House. Ebook copies will be made available for free to patrons of any amount as a patrons-only post when the book is done, as you've all certainly already paid for it.

I appreciate everyone's patience with me at this critical time. I am trying to finish more things than I ever have before, and if I can just bring them over the finish line, I think everyone's really going to enjoy them. This isn't at all a plea for extra donations-- I have plenty as is to accomplish all of these goals. What I ran out of was time, and if you'd lend a little more of that, that's all that's needed. Thanks for reading all this and your understanding. As always, refunds are available for any amount at any time.

I don't usually "this" a post, but I can't help it here. This, this, this, a THOUSAND TIMES THIS, Noah. The people who complain? Most of em AREN'T your Patrons. And if some of them are, it's a super small minority who can choose to un-Patron themselves if they wish. The majority of us are happily here supporting you because we like what you do, not because we have a financial gun to your head, or because you're a monkey we're trying to make dance. We love your work, as it comes. We aren't stressed. Please don't stress yourself on our behalf. We love you man. Be well. And be good to yourself.

SoldierHawk

I really loved you the dark souls video, I have watched it 10+ times. Granted I am a souls fan but for what it's worth I found it deeply resonant, it helped me find a joy and acceptance in my own play.

Anowl

Personally, I can't get enough of your content. Any videos of yours that I've yet to watch (or won't be watching in the near future) are only being left alone because I've not played the games they cover yet! It's always a treat for me to play through a game and realize that I've got a new companion NCG video to watch. Beyond those, your travel videos are something special. As far as I'm concerned, you take all the time you need.

David Frye

Alright, excited to hear the travelogue premises and excited to hear there's another From Soft video on the way sooner than later! I also really enjoyed the Souls video!

Collin Stoltz

Yeah, for what it’s worth, I found the dark souls video to be the opposite of disappointing, and I don’t even like those games.

Robert Steffen

Hi Noah, I just wanted to pop in and mention that I thought the Dark Souls video was one of your best yet, and that I am so pumped for another travelogue. Thank you for doing what you do.

Ben

Hey Noah, I just want to say that I always love the interesting perspective you bring to your videos. No need to defend yourself from a bad-faith shithead on reddit, I know from the content you've put out that there is a lot of care and planning put into your videos. Can't wait to see what you have to say about the rest of the From titles! <3

Zarza

Me and my friends got so hyped when you posted your Dark Souls video, the four of us started watching it together instantly. We loved your analysis of the series, especially the one of us who ACTUALLY considered DS2 as his favorite. Keep trucking on, Noah, your content is awesome!

Joseph

I quite liked the DS video. Consider this another vote to keep on truckin'. My favorite videos of yours have been your single game videos rather than the series retrospectives-- not because of the length, believe me that seeing a new massive video from you is a special joy-- but because I find that your strongest work comes from seizing on a strong central thesis and really developing it, and I suspect that's just easier when dealing with a single work rather than a series of games that may not have a singular vision behind them.

Peter Ciccolo

Get well soon! I hope you are feeling ok

Joey Smith

Noah, please, please, please stop giving so much weight to complainers on the internet, who will always be with us and will never be satisfied. Please listen to your longtime fans. The Dark Souls video was great. The delays and output are fine. Honestly it’s frustrating that it appears you listen to a loud but small contingent of angry people vs the many people who enjoy your work in the way you make it. Please listen to us as well.

Sela

Please take care of yourself. You're doing amazing work, but as your audience grows, there is always going to be more critical voices, but you shouldnt make their opinions the truth about your work.

Arvid Karlström

Anyone who unsubscribed because of your Dark Souls video isn’t worth having as a viewer. Please make the content you wish to make as *you* see fit. I adore every single one of your videos - please don’t change on the account of some viewers criticisms that I heavily disagree with.

Peter Montaño

I'll just chime in with my support since others have said my sentiments already with very thoughtful posts. Take all the time you need, and I honestly loved the Dark Souls video. I still run it in the background of my work days to motivate myself. Eagerly looking forwards to your next release, as always.

DoomedSheridan

Noah it kinda breaks my heart to read this thoughtfully put together condemnation of yourself and your past output putting that aside for a sec, most importantly your proposed travelogue projects sounds *exactly* like the culmination of everything I understand to be your passions & keen strengths - wishing the very best for your journey both geographically & creatively haha but no seriously, while I respect & certainly emphasise with your ongoing Patreon guilt (felt a similar horrible burden with a crowd funded production I helped run - honouring properly even ‘just‘ a few hundred dollars p/m sent me spiralling 😅) please, please P L E A S E accept just a fraction of the warm feedback this post has received. We’re our own worst enemies sometimes, we secretly agree with many of the mean spirited comments. While i bloody loved the Dark Souls essay & in my mind absolutely did NOT indicate a dip in quality - you’re bound to now have unshakable doubts about it. All i’ll say about that is two things: 1) please remember that at this particular cultural moment, anything fromsoftware adjacent is kerosene for internet proxy wars lol - i suspect your video & the lens in which it was framed rankled the established discourse lore TM, and the town square of twitter & yt loves to gossip and whinge as a result - try not to internalise this! 2) your body of work is not the problem (trust us lol!) i never leave comments tbh, forever a lurker, but i gotta step in when i recognise a guy clearly being way too hard on himself. Just hang in there fella, and please recognise that you’re making very cool shit

Liam Harvey

Hi Noah, after reading this missive I watched the Dark Souls video again, all of it. I can say the only repetitive thing in it was "git good", but that isn't representative of your script but more the discourse surrounding DS. You're doing fine work mate, and I have yet to regret a single pound I've earned sent your way. If suggestions are available, though if only to give you some respite. Postal did get another chapter that might kill half an hour, and you "asshole simulator" essay is one I've watched a few times.

Anthony Bardill

Mr. Gervais, please don't take any of those complaints seriously. I've listened to your Dark Souls video probably four times now--and it was fantastic! Not only have you gotten me to play DS and Resident Evil for the first time (both of which I'm loving), your travelogues have inspired me to take a trip of my own sometime. All of your content is fantastic and I wouldn't change a thing!

Dennis Scott

I absolutely loved your Dark Souls video and have watched it multiple times already. I very much look forward to the travel videos. Take time and take care of yourself too, being sick isn’t easy and it isn’t a vacation. Take time to recuperate, the content will come out when it comes out ❤️

Tom Webster

I'll keep it short since it looks like everyone else is saying the same. Take all the time you need. Your travel videos are incredible and in no way a scam. Keep doing what you're doing for as long as you are happy to do so. My patreon subscription will be here barring sudden destitution! Regards from Norwich, UK.

Sam_Harper

Pretty sure you are just getting extra flak for covering franchise that vitriol people have taken "ownership" off. Either sincerely or insincerely people will just attack your video out of ... loyalty to their "git gud" tribe. I suspect an another wave when you release the second video about the From catalog.

S.Envall

Long time fan, first time subscriber here - I know it's impossible to just say "ignore the haters" because you can't just block out criticism and be perfectly immune from the voice inside your head that says, "maybe I should have done it differently." And part of being compassionate and empathetic is listening to others, so I'm not going to be able to just fix by *telling you* to have different emotions. But I feel the need to leave an encouraging comment because you touched a nerve within a toxic community and they're trying to discourage you. Please keep on doing your thing. Good Luck!

Maeve Victoria Roth

Noah you are my favorite content creator on YouTube, and I am so sorry that you got such harsh criticism from your DS video. To have such a momentous project be treated so poorly by a group of people is uncalled for, but thankfully you’ve inspired a lot of other people to start that amazing trilogy of games because of your video! I also love cross country road trips, and can’t wait for you to have fun on yours!

Hunter McCoy

I doubt anything I say wouldn't be represented in other comments, but the dark souls video is what finally pushed me over the line to donating. Your stuff is great, but whatever that trendline of quality is, 10$ is nothing compared to the amount of entertainment I get from these.

Valerie Geisler

If your travel vlogs are a scam, I want to be scammed harder, as "Old School Road Trip: 4,167 Miles in a 1973 Mercury Marquis" is one of my favorite videos you've made. "If we took this trip in a 40-year-old car then by God, I will tell it to you in a 40-year-old manner." is just one of the many great quotes from that video. As for the Dark Souls and the Resident Evil videos: videos like these are why I love your channel. I thank you for your hard work and wish you well.

Grey Rocket

Hey there, new fan here. Just wanted to say that I was really surprised to read this. I haven't watched a lot of long video game essays on YouTube but I didn't want this one to end! And interestingly even though I have some different feelings about the Souls games at times I still loved it so much! I wonder if it was just a small part of the Souls community that didn't like it, and a long running diehard one. I found it a fascinating analysis with some really interesting themes, and even after having playing the Souls games for quite a few years now it showed me a lot I didn't realize, especially about Dark Souls 2. So please know that your video was really appreciated, and I really enjoyed your style. I think people forget that, even if they disagree with things, it's good to get different opinions and views on subjects to yourself. All the best

SebChilled

Looking forward to watching and seeing all in due time, take the time that's needed.

teno

Sounds like a lot going on right now. Don't worry about the delays, I'd rather no content than content that you had to sacrifice your physical or mental health to create. As for the people complaining about your Dark Souls vid, I did some digging and seems most of the whinging was in bad faith with just about everyone else, including Vaati frigging Vidya being really happy with it. The people who say you misunderstood Git God or you don't have the right to talk about the games at all, well you have to remember the people making those comments are just simple gamers. They're people of the land. The common clay of the internet message boards. You know... morons.

The7thDraconian

Ultimately I want you to have the confidence to make the content YOU want to make because I'm sure it will be good regardless. That having been said, would it make any sense when dealing with projects like the dark souls vid to just chop it up? Does anyone feel something meaningful would have been lost if it had been released in game-by-game chunks - still all at the same time as a singular 'project' - or would such a change make no meaningful difference in terms of algorithm chasing & audience growth/retention etc?

C2

I loved the dark souls video, and just about every video you've released. Your quality is always improving and your content is top notch! You already explained the motivation and efforts behind your upcoming trip the announcement video. Someone complaining it's a scam or low effort is completely ignorant. Your travel videos are wonderful and I always look forward to them. I'm excited to see it released, and I completely appreciate the amount of effort you put it. Even if it was just a camera pointed out the window of a trip you were taking, that's 90% of the travel videos already out there. And I enjoy your specific take on it regardless. Please don't focus so much on the low effort ignorant complaints of the internet people. There will always be assholes who want to hurt others, or are so entitled and selfish they think they deserve the world. Make what YOU want, that's what I want. And you're damn good at it. And of course thanks to your new editor! They're doing a wonderful job as well. Keep it up Noah! Always impressive. And be sure to take time off and relax and don't think about us. This is still a job and you need vacations and time away.

RogueThrax

The negativity that you're experiencing from the dark souls video is wild to me, I honestly can't believe that you're receiving that sort of feedback at all. I thought the video was fantastic! Regardless, from the very beginning you claimed it was the story of your experience, so if some jagweeds decided to ignore that and expect something that you explicitly stated you weren't providing, and THEN complain about it? Screw em. Ignore them. Your work is incredible, including the videos that are a little more free-form and experiential like the Dark Souls one. It's one of my favorites of your videos, and I've watched all of your videos multiple times.

David S

The Dark Souls video was a reminder to me that you, and you alone, are the reviewer who will get me to watch a multi-hour long video review of a game whose walkthrough I'm not even interested in. That video was excellent. And as a native New Englander transported to the west coast (in the Portland metro area), I'm thrilled to see my home region through the eyes of someone doing the opposite trip. Take care of yourself; we all eagerly (but patiently!) await your future content.

aquaticko

Hey Dude! The Dark Souls video was bomb. I've probably listened to it at least 5 times. It inspired a replay of the game on NG+ too just so I could experience the "revenge tour" as you called it. I'm about 1/3 of the way through Bloodborne so I'm stoked to hear your thoughts when the video launches. Let me add to the crowd of voices here saying that you make some of the best shit on Youtube. The comments section on any video is always going to eventually lead to a cesspool. Just remember how many sticky fingered toddlers know how to use their moms iPad.

Timothy Diemer

Just putting my voice out there as someone who has watched your videos since you were posting on the Kotaku community blog, the quality is as solid as ever. I've been a Dark Souls fan since Two, and your video was the first that actually codified the series for me. I've read or listened to hundreds of takes on the series and none collated so many insights into one piece. No one has quite interrogated the series in the way that you did. You gave me the language I needed to describe the series to others and get away from the discussion about how hard the games are, and towards a place where we talk about how the game world is hard, but the game design is absolute charity rooting for you to win. Also, I live in RI so if you need a beer while you're in Southern New England, I'm your guy.

Wusashicat

Your Dark Souls content had a statement of intent at the beginning - "Here's my story, throw it on the pile." And it was a good story, clearly marked as different from your normal videos, not as much a retrospective but your journey. People who got mad about that didn't listen to the intro - you gave them an exit, and complaining about a decline in quality when you're experimenting is *not* on you. Considering that Bloodborne is my favorite Souls game, I'll be curious to see your take on it.

Ferrett Steinmetz

As others have said, I greatly enjoyed the Souls video, I have recommended it to several friends who are interested in the series and have had nothing but positive responses. Do the work in the way you think best, have faith in the quality you bring to it and try not to worry as much. Based on the above comments you have a very supportive community of backers behind you, please try to draw reassurance and strength from that. Very much looking forward to your thoughts on Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring and I wish you the best of luck on the trip!

Nick Hurd

You rule Noah, your Dark Souls video was freaking amazing. I loved Elden Ring and Bloodborne is my fav game of all time, can't wait to see your video

Ryan Aston

I am also part of this silent majority. It's all good, man.

Rick

Like so many others here I want to know what fuckers are complaining about the quality of your videos going downhill. The very idea that the Souls video contained "filler" is ridiculous - the youtube algorithm doesn't exactly prioritize a five hour video over a four hour video! The richness and scope of your analyses is the reason I'm here and it continues to impress me, installment after installment. Few people would even attempt the kind of breadth and depth you bring to your work, much less bring it off as well as you do. And hey: I've read and watched a zillion bits of Dark Souls content over the past years and your video is the one that's actually gotten me to finally give it a real shot. So there's that!

Joshua Lewis

Really looking forward to the travel videos, but can wait until you feel it’s ready to go

Roberticus1992

Noah I’m sure there’s a silent majority still loving all your videos - I know I’m certainly one. I didn’t think the dark souls video was repetitive at all, in fact I’ve watched it through twice and trying dark souls 2 &3 for the first time off the back of it.

Roberticus1992

I don't know if impostor syndrome is quite the right word, but boy do you need to realize that you're better than you think. This is the second time I've seen you apologise to us, and I still can't fathom why. Last time, every comment was about how we couldn't care less how long it takes you to make a video, since we all know it'll be worth it. People join a patreon not to make the content come faster, but to make sure that the creator can make what they want without having to be a slave to adrevenue and The Algorithm™. If you make a video that takes longer to make than what is reasonable as a YouTuber, we've succeeded. That's a win condition. Not something to apologise for. Furthermore, I agree with this entire comment section in that both subjectively and objectively (view count), the DS video was one of your best. I was playing through the trilogy when you released it, and it was really interesting to interpret the game on my own, and then check what you had to say about it, and in what ways (surprisingly few) that differed. I love the video, your patreons love the video, Dan Olsen loves the video, some people got pissy about it. Fuck em. Do what you want, that's what will make us the happiest. That includes releasing as rarely as you have this year.

Mojken

Posted before I intended to, but maybe that will just keep me from going on too long: listen, your work is some of the most intellectually robust commentary on video games out there, and the haters simply don't know what they're talking about. Any emphasis on rate of productivity over your wellbeing and your own sense of what your work ought to be can only damage the integrity of the project. (Ask any academic whether arbitrary productivity standards are good for the spirit of inquiry...) As someone who struggles with vicious anxiety about creative and intellectual projects to the point that I've simply stopped trying to engage in them, I have been massively admiring as I go through your back catalogue of how you have continued to make so much brilliant content in spite of those hideously inhibiting emotional experiences. I don't want this to become just another kind of pressure, but 'If Noah can do this, maybe I can do my thing, too,' is a thought I've had more than once over the past few weeks. We love what you do. It's vital and beautiful and important. Keep doing it. But please, never at the expense of your health. Not ever that. <3

soph

I genuinely think quality over quantity is best. Don’t feel you have to measure value by hours. The content is why I subscribe, not how long the video is. Really looking forward to your next travelogue. I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait. I hope you are able to focus more on the camera work as that’s a part of the world I haven’t seen before and I always enjoy the visuals with these

Mark Fraser

Noah, I don't know what to say except that I am broke as shit but paid for a subscription anyway just to be able to say that anyone who thinks your videos are low effort just isn't qualified to assess them. No one who knows anything about writing, much less videography or editing, could possibly think your essays are anything but the product of intense hard work and the most robust kind of critical thinking there is. You say so much so efficiently that it makes me wish I was still teaching writing, so that I could use some of your sentences as examples of the power of concision in persuasive rhetoric. I found your channel through your Dark Souls video, and since I watched it (and then listened to the whole thing over again) I have been telling anyone who will listen that it contains some of the best things ever said about the games in any medium. And you absolutely nailed the difficulty question in a way that I don't think anyone else ever has. A friend who watched it just wrote me to tell me that it persuaded her to try the games, because she'd always been too intimidated by their reputation but your argument convinced her—and now she's having a blast making her way through DS2 on her own terms.

soph

I think everyone else here has similar thoughts: your health and planning are perfectly fine things to prioritize, and those acting otherwise don't hold your well-being in high regard, so their opinions can be weighed negatively, if not outright ignored. For me, supporting you on Patreon isn't about getting my money's worth, it's about enabling you to do the things you want, how you want to do them. I found your previous travel videos fascinating, especially as someone who doesn't travel themselves, and I very much look forward to the next one(s), but I'd never want for you to force yourself to do them at anything other than your own pace. You know how there's a lot of news in the gaming industry about behind-the-scene abuse, and how a lot of people decide to no longer support such businesses for their practices? Same principle applies to Patreon, including for teams of one: your work should ideally be done in a way that works for you, not to please those with the most negative of takes. Hope this ramble helped a bit. :)

Jules de Bellefeuille Defoy

oh cool you're doing a novel?

Benjamin Glover

I can't stress the growth alone on the Dark Souls video, you've gained nearly a million views on it alone, overshadowing everything, minus the Resident Evil video, in the last 5 years of your channel. The video is bound to have hit the weird crowds with it being a viral hit, SO DO NOT LISTEN TO BAD FAITH ACTORS. STOP IT.

Rinklestein

Take the Dark Souls comments with a HUGE grain of salt. Soulsborne titles tend to attract really fucking weird crowds, no matter if people like the games or not. The discourse around those games is huge, and is bound to reach the weird crowds if you so much as express a thought through the character limit of a tweet. (look at the few devs who made their thoughts on the Elden Ring available through the platform of twitter, and how the internet dogpiled them, it was pretty nasty) Really don't stress the video, and the feedback regarding it, as I can't imagine your channel has been stagnating or anything like that. You just keep reaching more and more people who are absolutely in love with what you do for us.

Rinklestein

It might have been the worst parts of the Soulsborne crowd who get upset when players cheese the games with the tools the games provide lol. Other than that I can't fucking imagine what insane thoughts they might have.

Rinklestein

Wait, people thought your Dark Souls video was a decline in quality? It's one of my favourites, and even got me hooked on the series. Fantastic work.

Alistair Struck

AAAAAA NOAH IF YOU KEEP LISTENING TO THESE BAD FAITH ACTORS I'M GOING TO SCREAM Your Dark Souls video, like the RE video, was tremendous. It's one of the best discussions on the games out there, and I say that as someone who has listened to all of Bonfireside Chat multiple times. You cannot please everyone all of the time, and frankly, the people who are complaining don't deserve you. You have a dedicated group of fans, not because you are catering to an audience or chasing the algorithm. We want to hear your voice, and want you to cover things at your pace. We came to YOU, not the other way around. Prioritize your health. Please, take care of yourself. And make art for yourself. Actually, just care less about us across the board, fans are the worst. Just do you.

Adam Bucceri

Noah, it pains me to think that people out there have the gaul to criticize such hard work you put out, no matter what it's for. I don't support many people on this site, but you don't just provide content, you provide soulfull journeys you have through the games you play, and the experiences you have. I can tell you WITH CONFIDENCE that not once over the 9 times I've watched your dark souls video did I ever feel as though it was bloated, repetitive, or long for the sake of being long. I feel like a very common trend with passionate creators such as yourself is that self care isn't enough of a priority. Tim Rodgers put himself in the hospital reviewing CYBERPUNK 2077 for gods sake, and that game doesn't even hold a candle to the Pandora's boxishness of Dark Souls. This pointless gatekeeper mentality of your harshest critics just doesn't really make sense. Just talk about your experiences man, because the words you say are worth hearing.

Annon Follower

It's so sad to see the rude and trollish comments get to you so much. It's important to keep an eye on the negative feedback, but it shouldn't be what you base your editorial decisions on. The Resident Evil and Dark Souls videos are each over 5 hours long and have close to a million views. That's huge! Just the fact that people are listening to you for that long and in those numbers should give you pause and awe. In your DS video you described unlike anyone else exactly what makes those games so special and why the debate about difficulty is as complicated as it is. You put out a very reasonable argument that succeeded analytically taking apart the game and was empathetic with both the people who champion the game for its difficulty and those who feel limited by it. I didn't feel like commenting this on the original video, because I've followed you for a long time and I sort of take it for granted that I'll like what you put out. I'm sure I'm not alone in that. By all means take the criticism, but please do so with a pinch of salt, specially when engaging with games whose fanbase has a toxic reputation. Hope covid goes light on you and that you take all the time you need to make things you care about <3

tom dv

Look after yourself, Noah. Don't push down health on your list of priorities, even when the ambition is driving you so much. Couldn't be more excited about the travelogues. I get that some people would want their YouTubers to only focus on one subject, but your takes are just too damn good and personal not to convince people they are integral with your other videos. Again, all the best and stay safe on and off the road.

Mieszko Czaja

With regard to the Dark Souls video, my impression is that it reached a particularly toxic segment of the fanbase of that game, who resented that your experience of the community was largely negative (out of game). As a longtime fan of the series, I had a great time with your video and didn't feel that it was overly repetitive. It felt like what your videos always are: a deep and thoughtful description of your experience with the games, and an exploration of the feelings they created in you, and what they made you think about. While I'm sure there was some legitimate criticism buried in there, I genuinely think a huge portion of the people who didn't like it are upset that you didn't have what they consider to be the "right" experience with the series. And those people aren't worth listening to. Looking forward to your next projects!

Carew Woodbury

I would encourage you to take the criticism of the Dark Souls video with a grain of salt, Noah- bad actors can’t stand to be called out. I never saw the video as repetitive. You had motifs you brought up, examined in each game, and returned to throughout the body of the piece as a demarcation of a thought. You can bring up Git Gud repeatedly in discussion because it’s a topic you can *discuss repeatedly.* So overwhelming was that attitude and meme was in the collective concept of the series, it would be a disservice not to meaningfully dissect it, and your experiences with it as you played.

Zach Phillips

I very much enjoyed the Dark Souls video, even though I've never played the games, had no interest in them, and thought they were just hack and slash adventure games for hardcore gamers to compete with each other in bragging contests. Your work changed my perspective 180, opening up my mind to the deeper qualities and themes to be found. It was profound and very welcome. I'm so glad I started supporting your Patreon--you're one of the few that I've invested in--and I have nothing but confidence in you and your abilities. Sympathies about the COVID. Please take care of yourself. I'll look forward to more of your work when you manage to get it done. Also, as a 20-year veteran SFF/horror author, I wish you the best of luck with your novel. I'd be happy to help out in some way, if you ever feel so inclined, but I am also confident you'll be just fine on your own.

Erik Scott de Bie

I enjoyed the Dark Souls video. Even though it is a game series I have never shown an interest in. I am excited for you getting to do your road trip. I am sure most patrons are just happy to see you do what you want to do. You have already given us so much great content over the years and come across as a decent guy.

Sean Murphy

Dude, your Dark Souls video got me to try Dark Souls. Your insights on the game are expressive, expansive, and excellent. If you'll forgive the snide response, fuck the haters. It was a great video! Made me try and enjoy a series I always thought was beyond me. Also I totally rolled a strength/endurance pyromancer who mostly uses axes in the first game and I'm LOVING it.

On a personal note, I had to cancel my subscription last year because I lost my job and was finding ways to cut costs of living. I'm now employed again, and without going into too much detail, I make almost twice as much with fewer hours and better people. I'm also getting married to the love of my life. I'm at both a personal and professional high point. I wasn't always there. I've been broke as shit, either unemployed or working jobs I hated for long hours with supervisors that drove me up the wall. I've had health problems, mental and physical, and struggled immensely with anxiety. You know what was always fun to do? Play what games could run on on my five-year-old refurbished laptop, either bought on Steam sale in good times, or got for free on Epic or something, and put on one of your videos. I could do that because you put them out for free. Hours upon hours of fascinating, well-researched, well articulated work. Yeah I could listen to a podcast or something, but I've always been a games guy. Your work made me feel like I wasn't wasting my life or clinging to something childlike by still deriving joy from these interactive works. Your work was there for me, for free, month after month. I don't know about other patrons, but my support is not contingent on your ability to consistently reach the insanely high watermark you hold yourself to. I don't seek to dissuade you from using that as a goal, but I'm just saying, your work was available to me, irrespective of my contribution to you. What kind of person would I be if I didn't extend the same courtesy. That said, your work *has* reached that watermark. Consistently. I have never reached the end of one of your brobdingnagian videos and thought "Well that was a waste of time". Not when I finished the video on Vampire: Bloodlines that I still fundamentally disagree with, not when I got through the entirety of the Neverwinter Nights video despite only ever having played the second, and not when I finished the Dark Souls video last month. Please remember to breathe every once in a while. The great cavalcade of indignant noise in the YouTube comments hides the quiet admiration of multitudes who value your work.

Henry S Mayper

I liked your Dark Souls video a lot for exactly the reason you stated at the start; people love to share the experiences that changed them. I think the fact that your videos always feel personal in that way, and not just a rote distant judgement, is the main reason I actually follow you. Also you still can't give me a refund, no matter how many times you ask. It's your money now.

Argus

Nothing but love, Noah. Can't wait to have you come through my side of the country!

Henry S Mayper

Also adding on to that, Salem, MA has so many places to visit that are interesting not just because of Fallout but historically. There is of course the witch museum, but also of note is the old burying point graveyard, the Jonathan Corwin house, and if you visit Marblehead the town over there is Fort Sewell, the Jeremiah Lee Mansion, and lots of other colonial era buildings. I’m just biased though because I lived there, but I think it would make for a fantastic video.

Kirk Furey

As a native Bostonian I am hyped to hear you talk about my home city! I think a lot of people don’t understand the kind of work that has to go into making travel videos, I’ve done similar stuff in the past and it always felt way more like work than vacation. Loving the content and hope you get well soon Noah!

Kirk Furey

I just want to help balance things out in your mind with the following statements: Firstly, the Dark Souls video was excellent and is a true high point in your output. Secondly, I feel like I get exactly what I'm paying for and I'd feel best knowing that you're living a sustainable and balanced life instead of falling into the YouTube trap of breaking yourself on the content wheel. You just keep doing what you're doing and don't let internet dickheads get you down.

David Allen

Can’t wait for the Elden Ring video, and very very excited for more travelogues. have been deeply enjoying your content for years now. Your travel videos have inspired my own adventures for which I cannot thank you enough.

Evan Jamieson

Good luck with the projects, I look forward to watching them!

Dave Kasson

Your Dark Souls video was quite good, any repetition was due to covering 3 games that themselves repeat, loop, and reverberate in their mechanics and lore and any in depth and thoughtful criticism of them will necessarily have its own level of repetition reflecting the source material. While the wait was long, the amount of content and breadth covered felt appropriate, I can't wait for the sequel video with all of the other fromsoft games and I eagerly and patiently await your travel vids.

Joshua Aslan Smith

Please add my voice to the choir of people who loved the Dark Souls video and to the other choir of people who do not view the chance to support a creator as an economic investment requiring a return.

Zoe Rose

Looking forward to the road trip videos! Let anyone who thinks they're easy try doing it themselves! I attempted to drive up the cascades last summer but had to abort when I thought I was developing COVID. Turns out it was just the wildfire smoke.

Megabyte01

I for one thought that the Dark Souls Trilogy video was a good one. It got me to dust off and finish DS2 after getting stuck on the throne guardians fight. I'll see if I can work my way through the rest of the series someday!

Megabyte01

I, for one, really enjoyed your Dark Souls video, and I am now tempted to give the first game a shot myself despite previously holding many of the same expectations that you did entering the series. Keep up the good work! And, I hope you enjoy your (eventual) trip across the country. I used to live along the Lincoln Highway, and have traveled on or near the route on more than one occasion.

prototype27

My condolences on getting COVID-19. As someone who got a mild case last January, I think I know how you feel. At least you don't have to worry about catching it on the road, I suppose.

Megabyte01

Thanks for the info and breakdown! Very excited for everything that’s coming! Also, fuck the haters. Your work continues to be wonderful, well-written, thoughtful stuff and it’s always a pleasure to view games through your lens of experience (And of course — get well soon!!)

Ian Campbell

I've rewatched the DS essay a couple times now and am eagerly awaiting your thoughts on BB/Sekiro/ER; you have an uncanny ability to both put into words the vague feelings that a game can inspire and highlight alternate perspectives that I never would have thought to analyze things from. Thank you so much for all the work you've put in on these projects; between getting your horror fan thoughts on Bloodborne and the prospect of getting more analysis of the locales my first Fallout (3) from a travel pro, I'm really glad to see this upcoming slate! The voices of angry people can drag you down, I know, but please know you're doing an absolute service by putting your work into the world. you have my gratitude, and that of thousands of others, never doubt it. Like the others here have said, you deserve every ounce of success you get and more.

Hayes

I want you to know that I thought your Dark Souls video was a delight and insightful, and I find your travelogue videos endlessly compelling and deeply thoughtful. Please remember that for every criticism you receive there are so many more people who don't always take the effort to comment their positivity (like me 99% of the time), but absolutely love what you do, and find you a magically unique voice in this world. I want to hear whatever you think is worth saying, and it's been a long long time since I've had any major criticism of your work. Please keep doing what fascinates you.

Colin Beerens

I would suggest, for your own benefit, that you ignore the youtube comments entirely from now on. Negativity bias is a real thing and you don't need to let a tiny group of people shout down your appreciative supporters and fans.

Whitman Schorn

To reiterate on what many have already said, your Dark Souls video was rad as hell and it's actually got me attempting to get through 3 again (only one I played) because your video helped me understsnd that series' design philosophy in a way I had failed to my first time. I only discovered your channel roughly 6 months ago but it's been far and away the best gaming analysis and critique I've come across on youtbe pretty much ever. I always look forward to your uploads at this point and eagerly await your follow up to the Souls trilogy video, as Sekiro is the one FS game that's clicked for me and I've actually beaten. Thanks again for the level of commitment and effort you put into your work, it shows and you deserve every penny of that patron/yt money 😃

DeadheadYates

Keep up with the amazing work Noah! I love every single one of your videos and I regularly go back and watch your old ones whenever I want to listen to a deep and meaningful discussion about a video game. Your writing is some of the best I've ever heard and you always make me think about a game from a different perspective. Your travelogues are some of your best work too, and I can't wait for your East Coast Fallout one!

Andrew Walker

"2) Gas shot up to $5 a gallon. I had set aside saving enough for gas around $3, but the way the price of gas has kept going up against the fact that 12-18 MPG is all I can reasonably expect from the Thunderbird has significantly increased the cost of the whole thing." Pick up hitchikers in exchange for gas money. We'll happily pay. Source: am a hitchiker.

Philipp K

Glad to hear your COVID case has been mild, and I can't believe I forgot or didnt put 2 & 2 together re:Lincoln Highway and East Coast Fallout locations. Looking forward to it all!

TheLastGreatOpiumDen

Noah you need to be very careful with how you approach critique to your work. The Dark Souls video got over 900k views. If one thousand people give you a critique, and you act on it, you could be ignoring the 899 thousand people who liked things the way they were. Be aware of the polling bias in your fans. I want nuanced in depth analysis and I don't think 5 hours for one of the most artistically influential trilogies in the medium is that much for that.

Noys

If there is anything I've learned in life its there will always be people who are upset for one reason or another. I have been enjoying your videos and your dark souls one is actually what got me into the game. I had no intention of ever playing it after starting the series with ds2 years ago and bounced off it hard. Now I'm obsessed with the original though haven't beat it yet. On 3rd save after doing some big noob oofs on first two that pysdo-soft locked me. I'm willing to check out the travel videos. Though worst case if they aren't my thing there is ice cream at dairy queen i don't like either. Doesn't mean it's bad or no one will like it. Its your passion and insight that makes you among favorite creators. As for quantity no one wants you to rush videos and the long videos rock for binge watching or using them for podcast while working or gaming.

Nik

Your videos are great Noah, both in content and delivery. You can't please everyone, I hope you don't get buried in the mire of internet feedback. Enjoy your travel adventure. We'll be here to watch (and frequently re-watch despite the length) your content when it comes out.

Tim Bolduc

I really enjoyed the Dark Souls review. It was quite long but I don’t think it was bloated.

Kale Perrien

I've said this before and I'll say it again Noah's travel content is the most valuable thing he's ever done and my personal favorite piece of writing bar none. The United States is so large that simply seeing the spaces in between is enough to grant an entirely new perspective on the country at large and its evolution over time.

Austin Green

Your last few videos (or last few years, really) are among the best work you've done, so don't go assuming everyone who supports you feels that way. I'd prefer you don't go about any drastic changes and keep doing things how you have been lately.

CJCW

Noah. Noah do whatever you need to do man. Also I live right by the New Jersey portion of the Lincoln Highway so you've got a beer on me if it works out that way.

Zambri

There's a 12-hour Elder Scrolls Oblivion review on YouTube right now that's sitting on over 2 million views. That's one video dedicated to only one game that is over twice as long as your Dark Souls video, and it's definitely a success in terms of viewership metrics. I feel like the vocal detractors of your Dark Souls video don't represent the actual majority of your fans, nor do they represent what YouTube viewers and new fans are actually looking for in long-form content. For what it's worth, I'm now over 100 hours into Elden Ring thanks to your Dark Souls video, and I eagerly await the next installment of your Soulsborne coverage.

Travis Torgerson

I, personally, think the videos you’ve made over the last year or so are the best you’ve ever done, the Dark Souls video included. I strongly suspect many (if not most) people being critical of it are doing so purely because they’re guilty of the toxic behavior you rightfully called out. And people who complain about the length are frankly just being silly. It’s not like anyone is being forced to watch the whole thing. For me, the depth with which you dig into the material is what makes your analysis the best out there, and sometimes that requires a lot of words! Thank you very much for the many many hours of entertainment and insight you have brought to my life and many others’ lives.

pigeonb0y

Can’t relate to folks that had an issue with the Dark Souls video - get well soon, and looking forward to everything that comes next !

Trevor White

Your Dark Souls video was absolutely fantastic. I have watched/listened to it multiple times. I have even shown it to friends who are fans of the series and they also loved it. "Tonally unpleasant" ? Ridiculous. I listen to your videos while working because of your tone and especially your writing. Such a breath of fresh air compared to most of videogame youtube.

soysauce

The Dark Souls video is probably my second favorite of yours after the one on the Torment games.

David Whitaker

Sorry to hear about the rona, and also that anyone was unhappy about your stellar Dark Souls video. There is no one else on youtube who I would put aside 5 hours to watch a single video from, and there's none of your videos I *wouldn't* find the time for, even if it takes a bit. It's never a slog; your work is fantastic.

kalyptein

I personally thought that your Dark Souls video was excellent, Noah, and perfectly captured my opinion on how to play those games. The negative always sounds louder, don't take it to heart mate. You are a treasure. ❤️

Liam Harrison

I'm just so excited for all of this. Especially your story. I really enjoy your writing in you videos and I can wait to luxuriate in your prose. Sorry you have hit these extra bumps on your path. Life can certainly be like that sometimes. But I still love your work, Tha k you making and sharing it with us.

Jonathan Sisson

The dark souls video was excellent and I wish you well. Looking forward to new travel videos when ever they come up

sarah

Wishing you well. You're doing great. Thanks for what you do.

Sav

Dark Souls was not a decline in video quality. Whoever said that can get rekt.

Jimbo

I am honestly astounded people felt the Dark Souls video was substantially worse than other videos you've made. I thought it was quite interesting, especially as someone who had always watched that series from the sidelines. I can't help but wonder if familiarity with the series ruined it for others?

Evan Barnett

it serves to show you can't really please everyone. Your recent videos are among my favorite, and your Dark Souls is probably up there in the top 3 ever. I really appreciate these "franchise reviews" because they force both you and me to develop a longer, more complicated outlook on a subject rather than just saying if you like a game or not. The theses that come out of them are more nuanced and interesting than ever. You need to do what you must, but I just wanna express my appreciation and gratitude for the work so far, especially those in late 2021/2022

resnet

Well that's a happy birthday for me.

L Tantivy

The dark souls vid was one of my favorites you've posted, I am legitimately shocked to see people complaining of a drop in quality. Can't be more excited for the next vid and the travel one

Codfish Cartographer

Hope you're doing well man. You got this!
