Big Changes, Small Delays

The last time you guys had to wait three months for content, it ended up being over seven hour's worth. Unfortunately, nothing about the production process for the Resident Evil video was sustainable for me. I didn't do anything EXCEPT put time into the project, and it did some injury to my mental health and the people around me for me to have pushed so hard. And in the end, it was full of errors, no better in terms of quality than anything I'd already done. It was not an *improvement*, exactly.

However! The response these past few months has been huge, and the Patreon has grown to nearly $10,000 gross before taxes. It's been difficult to square how I seem to have hit a skill ceiling with my own work with how people continue to throw money at it. The only ethical thing, at that level of income, is to hire someone to improve the quality of the work. It is too much for one person to get this much money on Patreon for doing game videos.

So now it's two! I've hired a longtime friend, Nate Greene, who you might remember from the Atomic Pilgrimage video. He's qualified, with a background in media production and a degree in it as well. I want to emphasize that this is not a request for more money, I have already paid Nate once and can continue to do so at the current level of funding.

Some of you have sent me resumes and requests to do this kind of work for me, and I generally haven't responded, so let me explain why briefly-- one is that I was nervous to work closely with a stranger, two is that I didn't want to do it remotely, three is that I simply couldn't afford it before and now I can. A number of people have told me they'd "work for free/exposure", but that isn't a comfortable offer for anyone: you're undervaluing yourself making those offers, and also putting me in a position of exploiting you or owing you if I accepted. So I never have. But Nate lives here in Bend, now, and I trust him and his creative process, so he was the pick. I'm sorry to anyone this offends.

Trying to convert my workflow into something two people can divide has been incredibly difficult, however, and has basically cost me the entire month of October. I have been using Sony Movie Studio 13, and 11 before that, since like 2014. I have been using Windows Sound Recorder. I have been using cheap, basic software in a haphazard way for my entire Youtube career, and that's been mostly fine working alone, but Nate's suggested we move on up to Adobe Premier and that's been a learning process. In time, this collaboration is supposed to lead to a better quality output where Nate fixes the audio and helps densify the clips used in the videos. The general vibe of the videos and the script, plus the rough first draft of the video, is still mine alone. But Nate can make them better, and for the amount I'm being paid, they ought to be. This past month has been a lot of him asking "Wait, you do it HOW?", and me having to reply "Well, what's the right way then?" and we're gonna get there eventually.

For now, it means that I'm behind on my output. I didn't want another payment to go by without explaining what I've been up to. I have a lot of projects, large and small, that are half-finished and in the first couple months after the Resident Evil video I spread my attention too thinly among them and didn't finish. Now, I'm trying to finish while also having to navigate breaking a lot of my old habits and form new ones. I'm also still doing mechanic's classes at the community college, but I've scaled back on those some because of the needs of the channel. I've also been trying to finish a novel, and put in like 50 pages the past couple months, but that's not what's owed. What's owed is, now, at least three hours of back content plus forward content. It's coming! I deeply regret not having anything concrete to show this October, not even the Deathloop video even though that's just a quick guy. The reason is that I'm trying to significantly reinvest in the production process and drag it, kicking and screaming, towards something more professional. And I'm slower with that than I'd wagered.

As always, refunds are available, I can refund the last couple months of non-output to anyone who wants it, or further back. Thanks very much for your patience and your support, I'm trying to do right by it.

Hi Noah. Just signed up. I found you through your, and I want to emphasize this, excellent Half Life documentary. The Half Life series are really very close to my heart, so I'm glad you made them such justice. I watched a couple of other clips and you're really great at what you do, so I decided to sign up.

laxsill

Just watched the New FH Video, fantastisc, What a fantastic surprise and welcome delight! The intro is amazing, and what follows is even better, with far better audio. Really one of the best Racing Game reviews I've ever came across, super work and Kudos for Nates work. I can' wait to see what comes next.

kezabfz

you are the best video writer on the internet noah. i fell in love and could almost feel the sands of a place ive never been through your detailed, dense and fucking human prose are a spot of light in my days. thank you unbeliveably

roach kisser

Noah's Audience: Holy shit a 7 hour video of some of the best critique on the internet! Thanks Noah! Noah: I'm so sorry to have once again failed all of you please ask me for your money back.

NewStatic

Thanks for the update, and congratulations on the new team member! the time you’re spending on this new workflow will be well worth it. Looking forward to whatever you have in store next, and hope you’ll spend some of that regained time on your novel and classes :)

Tiernan Garsys

I really enjoyed the Resident Evil video.

Aaron

Love the content!

Jimbo Lescinq

As someone who’s a new Patreon supporter but a veeeery long watcher, I’m stoked for you and am looking forward to what you have coming.

Jackson Frazier

Also I would pay a lot of money on top of what I've given already for anything by you in print. A full on novel sounds a dream

Amber Dixon

Dude, this is brilliant. I've not once missed an upload and it's gonna be brilliant to be able to listen to your stuff with headphones. You are worth every penny we give and don't forget that

Amber Dixon

Noah, you’re work is absolutely worth $10,000. Don’t sell yourself short. That being said, your health and happiness are so much more important than content. Great to hear you’ll have help! I’m a new contributor. The RE video was phenomenal, but not the reason I started to contribute. I had your Doom Eternal video shared with me and spent the next month binging every video from the last 5 years. You’re content has always been great and I can’t wait to see what the team puts out next!

Tad Cooper, an actual dragon

I actually thought the audio was noticeably improved on the resident evil video. Given its monstrous length I'm not surprised there were a few mistakes here and there, but I thought the overall audio quality was clearer and better balanced. Video looked fine the times when I was watching the screen but I'm usually just listening to your videos as a podcast, so I don't notice the visuals much. Not that I'm stressed about it. Your commentary has always been more than enough quality for me to appreciate your content. But since I know you're working on it, I figured some feedback would be good.

Michael Kenner

So exciting! Don’t let the AV get too high quality, it’s a part of the appeal!

Lachlan Good

While I am glad that you're taking these steps to improve in quality, I just want you to know that the main draw for your channel is still the uniqueness of your perspective and the earnestness of your authorial voice. I still enjoy watching and rewatching your videos because you explore games in such a deep and metatextual way that I simply don't get anywhere else. They are each a treasure.

Steven Garrett Day

Personally, I thought that the RE video was great, warts and all. I can definitely see how making it would take a toll on a person though. Hopefully having an editor can take some of that strain off of you.

Dirt Person

Fantastic. I watch you for your writing, this means I'll get more of that.

Me Shell

For the record, I found the RE7 video to be as high quality as the rest. I know its hard to look at something you created and not hyper-fixate on the things one wishes they did differently. I hope this professional relationship with your editor smooths things out for you, mentally as well. Lord knows how tedious video editing can be, personally I think I'd rather wash dishes.

Timothy Rebidue

I LOVE YOUR CONTENT, even if it takes a year, I dont care. Full stop.

DJBLAKLITE

Thanks for the update! I admire your ethics so much, I have no doubts the money spent is in good hands, you are doing exactly what I hoped and investing it back in the channel. I hope everyone is understanding of the learning curve this will take for you. As far as I'm concerned, your content has always been good where it counts and now I'm excited to see what it looks like with a bit more polish.

VenusInFurs

Noah, you self-loathing bastard, we love your videos and it's not an inconvenience if they come out rarely. Some people I follow haven't put out any content in YEARS. You're good, and for the record the Resident Evil video was great. Take care of yourself, first and foremost. You don't owe a bunch of strangers shit. Your job is well done. Also, yay for getting an editor who you trust and will hopefully work together with well.

BoogersBoogersBoogersBoogersBoogersBoogers

Thanks for the update Noah. I always appreciate how well written and detailed your updates are. I'm glad you've hired an editor, and I look forward to the improved videos. The quality of your work is almost unparalleled for me, and I hope you don't beat yourself up over missing deadlines too much. I'm happy whenever the work is finished, and I knew how long it takes to make work of your quality before I decided to give you money. I know it probably doesn't mean a lot to hear this from a random stranger on the internet, but I hope you take care of yourself.

Max Woodruff

The main thing that I hear from this is that your channel is doing well and you're getting the recognition you are owed (even if it has to be shoved in your face lol). If you feel that demands brining on a new person is the best next step, I'm excited to see it. That said, don't be hard on yourself for the learning curve. These things always have them, and anyone who is reasonable here will understand and respect that.

PHILIP A COFFEY

I’m really pleased you’re now able to hire someone to help you – more just for the sake of hopefully reducing the stress on you really, rather than any quality concerns! Hopefully this will let you concentrate on the content, and if tidies up a few of the audio hitches and improves the density of the accompanying footage, so much the better.

Zveebo

A humble request for Nate, if he is reading this: No matter what Noah tells you, your main job from now on is to kick him in the butt if he starts self-flagellating again in public for not meeting some standard that very few of his Patreon backers actually care that much about. :-) In all seriousness, though, I am quite happy about this collaboration. Creative process is often like sawing a log with a two-man saw, so having someone you trust on the other side of it can be hugely motivating and beneficial to the results.

Mikhail Aristov

Updating your process and making it more sustainable is a perfect use for the time/money. Don’t feel guilty at all.

Tom Webster

Definitely no need for a refund. I feel like I'm investing in professional development here, not paying for a video essay or two. And in that regard, try not to stress too hard about getting the two-person workflow down perfectly for the first video you do this way. I know you'll get there, and I'm most looking forward to the stuff you produce a year or two from now, when you've found your new rhythm and are pushing the creative limits of the new well-oiled machine. Also, finish your education at the pace that works best for you, but don't sacrifice it.

George Dorn

The "scaled back on community college classes for the needs of the channel" is a big red flag. That's not what Patreon is about for me. The whole point is that it should cover your living costs (and expenses) so that you can make long-term investments, including in yourself. You should fund the classes and trust that it will pay off in ten years, or thirty. 🙂 That said, hiring someone is a great call and I personally do highly appreciate investments in the improvement of quality, including audio.

Henrik Heimbuerger

The skill ceiling catch-up was very inevitable imo, you were under-appreciated for a long time, & the notoriety is creeping up to match the quality of your work. I know it's tempting to look at this as "too much income" but it's still well-behind what your output is worth. Didn't really occur to me that the RE vid could become the new normal anyway, can't say I would've been too thrilled about it, even tho the massive videos suit me perfectly. It's gotta be a huge drain, & like you said, a big focus means more oversights & mistakes, which you seem to hate having in your stuff to any extent. I'm supportive of a return to shorter videos, but I'll always be excited to see the occasional huge boy. Interested to see what kind of changes the new hire will create, good luck!

TheSoulJames

Noah, as one of your longtime Patrons, let me assure you that you earn every penny. Take Care.

Rob Tackett

The RE video was incredible but no one would possibly expect that sort of output again. Take care of yourself and getting your new process in place!

Timothy Diemer

Jeez, I only joined this patreon a few days ago, but if this is the kind of communication I can expect then I think I'm gonna feel pretty justified. S'all good, man, updating your process is tricky at the best of times, but hopefully at the other end it results in a smoother way of doing everything and you feel like it justifies the time taken to relearn it. I ain't goin' anywhere, I've been enjoying rewatching some of the oldies.

Sasquatch

It is great to hear that you were able to hire another person with the money that you've received. But could you please stop whining about how you don't deserve this much money? You aren't being overpaid for the work you do, you are greatly underpaid for how much joy you bring to the world. Thanks again for your videos and your post updates.

Grey Rocket

Your content is so uniquely meaningful to me that I will support you pretty much unconditionally. I appreciate the reinvestment of our funds into the content at this point though. This post (and other things) fills me with trust that I will not be taken advantage of. Your (planned) Spring road trip videos are something that I am looking forward to with immense excitement. Your previous vids inspired me so much that I planned my own road trip for next year. Nothing too big, but it's just the start.

Revan777

Thank you for the update! I think all your reasoning is sound and considerate. Thank you for always maintaining clear ethics and transparency.

RogueThrax

Also, and I understand why the answer might be no, but have you ever considered reviewing JRPG series like Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts, or is that genre too far just outside of your wheelhouse?

Megabyte01

I'm glad you found someone to help you with the video editing process! I trust your judgement to take a little time off from production to improve the overall process. Looking forward to Death loop!

Megabyte01

Thanks for the update Noah! I can only speak for myself here - but I choose to support you not because I feel like I’m paying for a product that I deserve to receive, but because I love all your output in whatever form it takes. More professional, or less. More frequent, or less, too. I totally understand wanting to make sure we’re on board! But if your path right now is school, or writing a book (which you better damn well believe I want you read!) I’m here for all of it. And I won’t need any refunds. :)

Matt Leffler

This is exciting news! You're doing great Noah, any amount of wait will always be worth it. You have my unreserved support, in whatever enedeavour takes your fancy, however you wish to achieve it.

Tom Painter

Thank you for the information! I am incredibly happy to hear that you are able to offload some of the Workload on to a friend and coworker! Cheers to a less grueling process for you in the future! Cannot wait to see what you continue to come up with!

Clancy Bundy

You're good, man. Love your stuff and take the time you need to put out a product you believe in!

Rick

Sweet! This iteration process is likely feeling incredibly awkward, mentally stressful, and overall absolutely worth it. Good on you for going through it. I’m looking forward to whatever comes next.

James Woodman

Please continue to make whatever content you like at whatever pace is healthy and enjoyable for you! Your stuff is always worth the wait, my man. You have completely EARNED and DESERVE all of your success so please don't ever feel otherwise!

Deacon St. John

I've been slogging away at a music project for the past 2 years. Noah, it's been so helpful to hear about *your* creative process. Having something to say, and finding a way to get it out there, in spite of depression and other obstacles. How slow it's going, does it suck, etc ;) So I get a double benefit, not only do I enjoy your content, but also the way you talk about creating it, the ups and downs of it. And -- it's inspiring to read the warm and encouraging messages from the people who support you. I'm proud to be accompanying you along this part of the journey.

Carol Henderson

I am glad for the update, and while I have been eagerly awaiting the new output, I appreciate the updates. It all sounds very sensible to bring on Nate and spread some workload. The 'professionalism' or 'quality' of the videos has never really been my concern, and personally, I would feel a bit weird if they're too polished, but that's silly I suppose. The main thing is to get in a solid rhythm you're comfortable with. Super excited about the novel too!

David Jackson

noah, so many youtubers i like need time for their often long videos - like yours - and what i and i guess most of your supporters want is that you are well and make the stuff you want in your own way and time :) keep it up.

Hieronymusgoa

For what little my opinion matters, I certainly don't expect you to be on an always-hustlin grindset and at the same time I don't expect you to be ashamed of your success. Keep on keepin on.

Benjamin Glover

Appreciate the update Noah - sorry to hear the RE video caused issues but glad that you have been able to ask for and receive the support you need.

Cameron

Dude, this is spectacular!!! And I am so glad you got someone you can trust on board, and who is a friend on top of that! Only good can come out of this! Don't fret, I know that whatever you put out will be good!

Romanian embassy in Bonn, Germany (derogatory)

I hope that you take as much time as you need for all of your projects, Noah. And I hope that the money you're bringing in allows you to do the things that you've wanted to do with this newfound income. I personally am more than glad to give the whopping price of a Chick-fil-A sammich, fry, and milkshake a month so that you can say my name in a plaid shirt four times a year. The way you can make a game that I have no interest in playing seem so interesting to hear about is something that you excel in and something I enjoy taking part in every few months or so. I hope you don't feel compelled to do damage to yourself just for this, though. Thank you for everything :)

Morgan Kramer

The audio/video quality has never been a big concern for me, but if bringing in another person to help with the production means they get made with less stress and come out (eventually) quicker, then this is great news.

Scott Dick

Exciting times! Trust me, adding staff and changing tools ALWAYS impacts release schedules, especially when making the scary transition from "1 person project" to "small team project". Figuring out how to distribute the work, learning new workflows, developing communication habits and collaborative trust... there's a lot to figure out, but the payoff at the end is likely to be huge. :)

Daniel Floyd

Take care of yourself Noah! Looking forward to whatever is next.

mxmx

Crunch sucks, take care of yourself. It's content worth waiting for and not worth killing yourself over.

Frank Horrigan

If it takes a month to get everything in order for you to make work more manageable, I'm very ok with that. It honestly could have been a month of you recharging after the big RE video and I would've been cool with that. Also you mentioning hitting a skill ceiling is interesting because your writing is about as good as anyone on YouTube, imo. Keep it up Noah, looking forward to the next one.

CJCW

I don't expect a video every week. You ain't Joraptor. As long as I get quality content I can afford to wait a month or three.

Symmetrymaster

Mate, you are the *pinnacle* of quality over quantity..! You wouldn't be getting my money if I wasn't happy with what I get for it, you're doing great :)

Jake Hadley

Hey just wanted to comment. I became a supporter not to speed up future videos, but to say thanks for all the hours I spent watching your current library. Just do what feels natural, for the pressure isn't worth it.

Andrew Davis

I like those too much to let them go, and I think most everyone else does too. They're staying. But like, for example, I've been told over and over (and over) how much people hate my 'screaming', that it's 'ear rape', and I don't mean to scream and don't really feel like I do, but the audio levels lead people to say that I just unfunnily scream at the top of my lungs all the time.

Noah Caldwell-Gervais

I am extremely pumped for this. Take your time. <3

xGABBIx

Excited that the videos are gonna be even better. Please don't overwork yourself, learning new tools and breaking habits is hard. Take your time.

Shieldwall

I hope with these higher production values you still do the intro with a paper title screen and song playing in the background :) But I won't be upset with any creative direction y'all take as long as you continue with your awesome analysis

misterfischer

It makes me very happy to think that you're moving towards a more sustainable video-making process! I think consuming art through the medium of youtube and patreon necessarily includes some conception by the viewer of the conditions of the artist while making the work. Personally, the thought that the video being created was made in a way that was healthy, satisfying, or even entertaining for the artist themselves contributes a lot to my enjoyment of the work!

eldabys

Hoping the new methodology goes great for you both! Love you channel, love your work, and excited to see more of this new part of the adventure

Reilly Peters

Really appreciate your dedication to us. Excited to see what's next.

Otavio Albanesi

Noah, you continue to be the most genuine content creator I've ever come across. I can absolutely understand Nate's bewilderment at your process, as it's the same bewilderment I have when working with friends who aren't experienced in media production. Your Resident Evil retrospective was an absolute joy to watch and never have I heard someone so eloquently express the pure essence of the franchise quite like you. I'll always be looking forward to your next video and can't wait to see what Nate brings to your production!

Azroix

The quality of the videos has never been an issue for me personally but I am very happy you have help to share the workload, hopefully that helps remove some stress!

Sela

Really appreciate you putting the time and effort into honing your craft. Even without professional production values they're still the best videos on YouTube, so with them you'll be unstoppable.

Jack Hogg

Congratulations and good luck on entering a new phase of your career doing this. Every time I've seen a creator graduate from a one-person team to more, it's been a necessary and well-deserved break for the original person and a jump in the quality of their content, even if there is a learning process in the transition. I look forward tremendously to seeing what this does for the channel and I have full confidence that however long the wait is, the reward will be worth it. Take your time, learn new things, and we will fire the confetti cannons upon your return!

Hayes

Noah goes pro... Who'd have thunk it? But seriously, even though the quality of your videos was never an issue for me personally, I'm glad you're bringing some help on board to ease the burden on you. Here's hoping it allows you some time for you. You deserve it!

Rich Stoehr

Wouldn't dream of refunding. Your videos are always worth the wait. Glad you got some help on future projects now. Take care of yourself Noah, your health mental physical is first and foremost homie.

Dorian Sanchez

hope the new workflow works for you! still very happy to enjoy your content at whatever rate ends up working for you. take care of yourself and hope you have an excellent day!

Matthew Casseday

Professional tools, the delight, the horror!
