I’m guessing his modified plagiarism is to either make it harder to identify (he can’t figure it out anymore, so he assumes nobody else will either), or because he’s “elaborating” (by removing words or making the grammar worse, oddly) to make the work “his own”.

I've been trying to figure out how to put that thought into words succinctly, but haven't been able to. You ball explanation is perfect.
