Aside from prescribing medications, it's not clear to me that Melfi ever did anything to actually help Tony, aside from giving him someone to talk to. Mind you, we chalk this up to poetic license. Accurate therapy dealing with coping strategies wouldn't make for good television.

2025-07-20 23:12:26 +0000 UTCJust an FYI, his mother in no way resembles someone with Borderline Personality Disorder, and even the therapist's description of BDP is completely off base. A quick wikipedia search and comparing what she says will show that right away. I'm afraid as powerful as these therapy sessions are, and they were a huge jump forward for TV at the time, they're not nearly as accurate as something like the Wire's accuracy with its subject matter. And people do have gripes about the Wire too.
