The Wire Season 2 EP 11 & 12 Early Uncut Access

Really enjoyed Season 2 of The Wire. I know alot of people felt that this was a slower and unfulfilling season, however I absolutely enjoyed my time with this season.

Mino BG

Zachary Letner

Perfectly said. Season 2 is incredible. 4 is my personal favorite.

Mirko Ferreira

It's a travesty that The Wire never won an Emmy and was only even nominated one or two times, but it's especially true for Chris Bauer's performance as Frank Sobotka. Bauer recently said he can't stand to see his performance in this season because he feels he could've done way better but was suffering from alcoholism at the time.

GDC

On rewatch you notice how many characters parallel each other. Here I listed to Frank tell Ziggy "we're more alike than you know" after him saying he was tired of being a punchline. Frank was tired of the dock workers being the punchline with no recourse, no help. He lashed out like Ziggy in a way, taking the money from the Greek. The difference was that it was for his union and way of life, while Zig was more personal. Having lived in Bmore, it's great to try to spot all the areas of the city they filmed this in. Found myself in a bar once and recognized as the inside of a scene filmed for the Wire, same with a street on Locust Point where the Sobotkas live.

Tom McDonald

Season 2 is my favorite Frank is such a tragic character.

Justin Broadbent

The Wire always gets a lot of hype and it's all totally deserved. Amazing season! Always looking forward to more. Happy holidays!

MorkBork

Ngl that week break is going to be tough, but the wait will definitely be worth it. Season 2 wasn't as bad as people said it was probably a little less exciting in my opinion. I'm definitely hyped for season 3!

Markus Burns

There's a very short scene in episode 11 where they're bringing Frank out of the station and the media is there to film it and bombard him with questions. They shot the coverage from Frank's POV and reverse shots from the media's POV. Pretty standard stuff, except they actually filmed the media's side with a different framerate to give that half of the footage a different look and feel, like watching the news. They've done the same thing in past episodes with security camera footage too. Normally they'd film it the same way as anything and then add lower thirds and white boxes inside the frame in post to make it look like news footage being filmed in real time. They go the extra mile on The Wire with details that you don't see very often, if at all in movies or TV. Valchek towards the end of episode 12 says "rest in peace" to Frank in Polish after he gets the last photo of the van. He's still a useless jerkoff. The song that closes out the season was sung by Steve Earle, who played Walon in season 1. He's the middle aged rocker guy that helps Bubbles out in Narcotics Anonymous and he shows up again down the line.

Brandon

Season 2 is excellent and the importance of meeting The Plug grows season over season. It's just that seasons 1, 3 and 4 are All-Timers in television history. Just wait until you take that first bite of season 3 big dog.

James Edwards

These institutions are the gods and the characters are just slaves to them wit capitalism being the ultimate god. The fate of all these characters are pretty much predetermined which is the tragedy of it all.

Wavon Barksdale

RE: E11. I think you misunderstood, Brother Mouzone did not actually torture Brandon. Stringer was framing Mouzone to convince Omar to kill Mouzone to get him out of the way of Stringer's deal with Joe, without Avon finding out it was Stringer's doing. Edit: Nevermind, seemed you cottoned on at the end.

JXTN

Your point about characters at the end is why I love The Wire and Sopranos so much. There are like 70 characters in each show that all have layers and depth to them. You can ask 100 people and they can all give you a different answer about their favorite character

Young Simba

You also made an observation about Stringer thinking he's smarter than he really is. I argue that even though he doesn't take classes at community college, Avon is actually the smarter of the two (in addition to being the better dressed). When I first rewatched the full series, I realized that Stringer is actually kind of a screw-up. He makes a lot of mistakes. His conversation with Mouzone in the hospital is a good example.

Kana Kawase

The fan appreciation of Season 2 has grown over the years. Back when it aired, people just weren't ready for the change of focus. After several decades of prestige TV, that change doesn't seem so dramatic, and it is thematically very important. It's not just a story about the street drug trade. It's about the systems, as you said. Currently, fans are more likely to name Season 5 as the weakest, though I kind of love that season because it features Clark Johnson, who played Meldrick Lewis in David Simon's earlier series, Homicide: Life On The Street.

Kana Kawase

Can't wait for the next two seasons which many think are the best two. But, dude...season four? A completely different level. Also, don't know if you noticed, but when Valchek arrests Frank, he has them waiting in the union hall and says now it's time, I got the impression that to humiliate them, they contacted the press and waited till the reporters all got there so he could make their arrest a spectacle.

TES

Season 2 is where the writers open you up to the scale of the story. One thing to note, a lovely mirror between season one is the Kima interviewing the Madame vs the interview with “Bird” in season 1.

Inappropriate Affect

Season 2 is just as excellent as the rest of seasons in terms of quality, with the exception of 4 because it’s just on another level. People were just upset because they wanted more of season 1 and couldn’t accept something different.
