The writers of the show had been journalists prior, for more than a decade in Baltimore, and i think the very grounded realism and interconnection of policing, economics, politics, media and education reflect that quite well.

2024-08-12 22:14:54 +0000 UTCAlso, can I make a humble suggestion? I noticed sons of Anarchy on the poll, and I think the earlier FX show The Shield, is worthy of attention too. It's a very underrated show, but it walked so that Sons of Anarchy could run. It's a gritty cop drama inspired by the rampart police scandal (that inspired much ''cops are a gang'' media like GTA San Andreas and Training day). The Shield has god tier acting, an intense and well written story, the biggest shocking moments in TV history, and an amazing 5th and final seasons. It's almost criminal that it does not get remembered alongside The Wire, Sopranos, Oz and the rest.

I think the denseness of the show, while initially a roadblock for newer viewers, becomes its greatest asset: it grows into being a show that has something to say about everything. Just when you think it's run out of steam, it pivots and grows and finds a new vitality. It's also really fucking funny!

Each season is quite different, but they really come together to form an interesting whole in a way no other TV show I can think of has done. It's a series really strongly rooted in its themes.

2024-08-10 18:39:02 +0000 UTCI feel this show is as much a documentary as a drama. Created by a cop and journalist, they really captured Baltimore, which is a character in its own right. Much is based on real people and events, and if you watch closely enough, some of the actual people appear in the show (as a different character). There's a reason this is one of the best shows of all time. Enjoy the ride!
