James vs Sci-fi Poll
Added 2024-01-22 16:51:16 +0000 UTCVote on what I should watch and react to next! This Poll will end most likely Thursday and I'll choose the TOP 2 to react to next week on Wednesday and Friday!
No worries, I plan on actually prolonging these recommendations so don't trip if you don't see your selection on here first! :)

I'd recommend "The Man from Earth" to anyone else. Another low budget sci fi film I've watched recently and enjoyed.

2024-01-24 20:18:56 +0000 UTCOf course, there's also the 2001 anime movie :3

2024-01-24 06:18:47 +0000 UTCPrimer is an unbelievably good sci-fi film. Filmed independently on a $7000 budget, written, directed, produced, edited and scored by Shane Carruth
2024-01-24 04:28:06 +0000 UTCDo the movie Lawless!!!

2024-01-23 17:03:14 +0000 UTCI think he's talking about the Moroder cut from the 80s. It was 90-ish minutes long (because the rest of the footage was missing at the time), partially colorized, and given a pop soundtrack. It was the only version of the available for a long time but we have access to Fritz Lang's full movie now.
2024-01-23 16:11:59 +0000 UTCIf you mean the Gottfried Huppertz score all 3 reconstructed films (from 2010) offer that. It was written for the original showing.

2024-01-23 10:46:57 +0000 UTCJames, I HIGHLY recommend that you watch the Metropolis version with the updated soundtrack. It really makes it a better watch.

2024-01-23 05:33:41 +0000 UTCThey Live doesn't need my help. Voted for Fantastic Planet and A Boy and His Dog for some '70s madness.
Christiaan Van den Akker
2024-01-23 04:09:22 +0000 UTCA Boy and His Dog certainly won’t win (it’s far too underseen) but it has an incredibly far-reaching influence on the modern pop-culture perception of post-apocalyptica.

2024-01-23 03:09:29 +0000 UTCAny self-respecting sci-fi history lover needs to have seen Metropolis at least once. A Boy And His Dog is a weird one but still recommended from what I can remember (it's been decades since I saw it). The 70s is a treasure trove of forgotten sci-fi gems.

2024-01-23 00:53:47 +0000 UTCOsamu Tezuka based a whole manga after viewing a Metropolis poster. He hadn't seen the movie. It was later (2001) made into an anime, also called Metropolis, and is another really great film.

2024-01-23 00:18:04 +0000 UTCMy two votes are for: 1. (YAY!!!) Metropolis (1927) - A truly ground-setting science fiction movie. Please make sure that you view The Complete Metropolis (Kino), Eureka, or Madman versions as they are all the same and as complete as possible. 2. A Boy and His Dog - A post-apocalypse movie that is difficult to explain but based on a Harlan Ellison story They Live looks to have already won, and it's a great and funny movie.

2024-01-23 00:12:42 +0000 UTCEven if They Cloned Tyrone doesn't win you should still definitely check it out at some point holy wow

2024-01-22 23:24:30 +0000 UTCI saw this in the theater back in the day! I love the expression on people's faces when you try to explain the plot.

2024-01-22 21:09:59 +0000 UTCMetropolis is something of a Rosetta Stone for 20th-century sci-fi films. So many tropes (both from a design and storytelling perspective) can be traced back to it. However - there are a bunch of different versions of it floating around out there. Different distributors have edited it every which way over the years. If you can find it, the best to watch is probably what is known as "The Complete Metropolis," which is around 2-1/2 hours long. It's a restoration completed in 2010. Some footage is taken from a damaged 16mm print, so the quality dips noticeably in those parts, but it's probably as close to the original 1927 version as is possible. It also includes a new recording of the actual original score that was played live at the premiere.

2024-01-22 20:10:59 +0000 UTCAlthough my preference is The Body Snatchers, I would appreciate your reaction to John Carpenter's They Live.

2024-01-22 17:48:27 +0000 UTCA Boy and His Dog is such a wild movie. A major inspiration for the original Fallout too.

2024-01-22 17:06:22 +0000 UTCYou should check out the British tv show Utopia! It's a low budget conspiracy thriller with a ton of experimental cinematography and soundtracks and by far one of the most tense thrillers I've ever seen. But if you check it out make sure it's the British version! The amazon prime remake absolutely butchered the show! Here is a trailer that encapsulates the feel and mystery of the show pretty well https://youtu.be/uJnN3WMwDsk?si=5r2f-pXshh4TQeP8

2024-01-22 17:03:52 +0000 UTCUp for Tyrone, Fantastic planet, and naked lunch! Only not including They live only bc I’m confident it’ll lock in a spot

2024-01-22 17:01:28 +0000 UTCThey Live is a classic! Plus it stars the Maniac from Always Sunny.

2024-01-22 17:00:45 +0000 UTCMetropolis is a foundational scifi movie and still influences things today. And They Cloned Tyrone is tons of fun. Also Fantastic Planet. René Laloux made three animated films and they're all so good...and weird.

2024-01-22 16:59:38 +0000 UTCthey cloned tyrone was one of my top 5 releases from last year. highly recommend it
