The Elephant Man Filmmaker Uncut Movie Reaction!

I also saw it on the big screen in 1980, when I was 22. I remember the silence at the end. Powerful. Five years later, a much different film, "Mask" - 1985 (A teenager with a massive facial skull deformity and biker gang mother attempt to live as normal a life as possible under the circumstances.) - had me reflecting on this movie and how his mother was the powerful force that protected his humanity with a vengeance! --- As for David Lynch, the biggest surprise for me was his movie "The Straight Story" - A G rated Lynch movie and a MUST SEE! What was striking for me about it, besides the cinematic beauty and performances (especially Richard Farnsworth), is how it treated average midwesterners with dignity and respect, something many films have failed to do.

I actually got to see this in a theater on opening weekend, and it was as powerful and moving then as it is now 42 years later. As I recall, I was one of the very few who applauded at the end of this movie. At this point in my life, I hadn't seen many movies but I did know who John Hurt (Alien) and Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and High Anxiety) were. (Brooks was an uncredited Exec. Producer and the movie was produced by his company, Brooksfilms.) For me, this was my first David Lynch movie, and I've followed his career ever since. I even follow his daily number and weather report Youtube videos. Search for David Lynch Theater.

That one may be more difficult to find but if you are going to old cinema, I’d take a look at some Lon Chaney work, aka Phantom of the Opera or his son in The Wolfman

I'm suddenly interested on your take of "Freaks" (1932).
