Movie Recommendations!

Try to keep it to one/two choice PER person!

I’ll still navigate some early choices in the new poll, but other than that have away with it! GO!

New poll coming out tomorrow! ALSO...the winner for the polls are The Royal Tennebaums, Hurt Locker, and Chronicle.

Some animated stuff would be nice. To keep it in the realm of cinema, Miyazaki is a creator that would be great to see on here. My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away are both master classes in the medium.

Pumpkinbob

Alphadog

Cody Menard

Arrival is a must-watch.

Q

The Fountain is unlike anything else, honestly. It's what Cloud Atlas wanted to be.

Q

A Clockwork Orange and Pan's Labyrinth

AliaAtreides84

This was my third choice, but he said we could only nominate two. I love movies that have deep, dark underpinnings but have such lighthearted moments and relationships. Similar to the Green Mile.

Q

thank you for noticing the sauce

James Adams

A Few Good Men (1992), Lawless (2012)

Q

Empire of the Sun (Christian Bale, Malkovich) and Dangerous Liaisons (Malkovich, Glenn Close, Pfeiffer, Keanu)

Sophia_CA

Two John Boorman movies: Excalibur (1981) - By far the best King Arthur film. Includes some early roles by later household names (Gabriel Byrne, Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson, Helen Mirren.) The Emerald Forest (1985) - A man's child is abducted by a reclusive Amazonian tribe, and he spends the next 10 years looking for him (based on a true story).

Christiaan Van den Akker

that film is way too good

kimsmk

He has done Punch-Drunk Love :) As for the next PTA I hope he does Inherent Vice or Phanton Thread

kimsmk

Anything by David Lean

Matt

Stalker (1979) by Andrei Tarkovsky, a really great film Metropolis (1927) by Fritz Lang as you' ve not done any silent films, so may as well start with one of the most influential ones

Brett Coster

Seven Samurai, Fanny and Alexander

A big yes to Lost in Translation!

Juley

Definitely All That Jazz!

Juley

Please watch Run Lola Run (1999) and the Joy Luck Club (1993). They’re both incredible, though in very different ways. You won’t be sorry.

Juley

True Grit (2010). The Game

James

Inside Llewyn Davis PLEASEEEE

'No Country for Old Men' by the Coen Brothers. A masterpiece and my favorite film of all time. A perfect film start to finish. Next would by 'Punch Drunk Love' by Paul Thomas Anderson. Still my favorite Adam Sandler performance and I love this movie so much. It creates its own little universe and it's so different than PTA's other films.

Inland Empire and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood!!!

Mitchy D

It has Anthony lapaglia and Danny Aiello

29th street. Noone even knows it exists but it is one of the funniest, quotable movies of all time, and a true story. Please

Tampopo is on my list to see sometime this year. It looks really intresting

Penultimate Tommy Wiseau

I, personally, really want to see Chungking Express!

Penultimate Tommy Wiseau

Tampopo and Brazil. Both are excellent and unique, each in their own way. And for the sake of repeating myself, anything by Kurosawa. Ran, Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo... Or Delicatessen if you feel like more Jean-Pierre Jeunet after Amelie.

Paul Steffens

I haven't seen Possession yet but I would be very happy if James were to check it out. Also Climax was one of the bestest of the decade.

kimsmk

Hey Viktor

kimsmk

Paul Thomas Anderson's favorite film I believe!

kimsmk

I love the end of Rashomon. Some of the best acting ever.

kimsmk

I recommend Welcome to The Doll House directed by Todd Solondz starring Heather Matarazzo in her breakthrough role as the protagonist Dawn. One of the most unforgettable coming of age films I've ever seen. Also I recommend Videodrome by David Cronenberg since a lot of film people love that one and for good reason.

kimsmk

He does 3 movies a week. Mon & Wed are Poll winners, Thur is James' own choice. So if you want to see the works of those directors on the channel, get nominating some of their films.

Richard Akhtar-Dobson

Two Wong Kar Wai films you should check out. Chungking Express (1994) and In the Mood for Love (2000)

Avery

- The Martian (2015) - Sphere (1998)

Jiri Luza

I've got to put a word in for The Abyss, James Cameron 1989. One of the most ambitious and insane journeys of film making I've ever seen. The logistics for what was done for the film, the combination of practical components and the visual effects, is absolutely beyond nuts Also, one of very few films with a Theatrical and Director's Cut where both cuts are good, and have their own merits.

Vastate

Starship Troopers

Warrior (2011) and Bronson (2008), two Tom Hardy films, two very different performances. They are both great films.

Frequency (2000) with Jim Caviezel and Dennis Quaid and 12 Angry Men (1957)

Cody Price

King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword 2017 / John Wick 1/2/3/

Lasith Bandara

The Dollars Trilogy (A Fistful of Dollars would be the first one): some of the coolest movies ever created

I have these. They are great! I'm getting ready to re-watch them this summer.

Penultimate Tommy Wiseau

dr. strangelove and oh brother where art though

michael anderson

oh jesus that's a dark one

Glenna

The trilogy Three Colours: Blue, White, and Red, named after the colors of the French flag. They're primarily in French, and each film is themed by its color both cinematically and plot-wise. They're beautiful and interesting; I think you would really enjoy them and that they would suit your more technical commentary!

Yes, Three O’Clock High is such a great 80s film! It comes up all the time in the 80s Facebook groups I’m in.

Brittyn Lindsey

Great film. James just needs to check out more Robert Redford films in general (and not just what he’s directed)

I need to see this movie. I’ve heard from many people that it’s amazing

Sicario is amazing but James has already seen it

Charlie Hunnam was great in that. The movie wasn’t amazing but it was still pretty great

Definitely The Last Samurai. Such a great and epic film

Blood Diamond is amazing. One of my favorite movies. DiCaprio was nominated for Best Actor and should’ve won.

Great movie

Lord of War isn’t amazing but I think it’s still a very underrated movie

Source Code is a very solid thriller

Limitless (2011) and Ad Astra (2019). These two movies include Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and more. I was blown away at how great they were considering how unknown they are.

Ink (2009) & The Frame (2014). Jamin Winans working miracles on miniscule budgets.

2old4gamez

Green Zone with Matt Damon, and my second recommend is Black Sails, it's a tv-show, not a movie, do with it what you will, but it's one of the best shows ever made imo, great writing, cinematography, acting, effects, just the whole bunch. ;)

Marc Post

IM RECOMMENDING THE FALL 2006 TWICE

Sarah Manamtam

I still am vouching for a reaction to Climax (2018) by Gaspar Noé, but I’ll also throw in Possession (1981) by Andrzej Żuławski. I know it’s a long shot since it’s quite an underrated film, but it’s my fave film so what the hell!

We were talking about Three O'Clock High in the YouTube comments. Fun, tense late-80s high school flick. Great editing, camera angles, zooms, and Philip Baker Hall is in it! Speaking of high school, how about Dazed and Confused?

Richard Akhtar-Dobson

The Duelists (1977) or F is Fake

Kyle Baker

Warrior

Top Secret! (1984) Val Kilmer in his first role!

Zak

You should check out Terrence Malick's films - I think you would love the filmmaking choices. You can either work forward from the beginning with Badlands (1973) or jump straight to The Thin Red Line (1998) which is a great starting point.

Grunwalski

Locke (2013) - Victoria (2015)

H.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is such an excellent recommendation for any lover of filmmaking

Paul Boden

God you cannot deny the drip

Schindler's List (1993) - Steven Spielberg Spirited Away (2001) Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi - Hayao Miyazaki

Coleyra

All the yes.

Paul Boden

Clue (1985) - Cult classic and you'll have a great time watching it. Think the goofiness of The Nice Guys meets the plot of Knives Out.

søren knudsen

Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer. Behold the beauty of Stephan Chow!

Crispy

Diva, an excellent French thriller I'm also going to shout out again for Source Code, from the same guy who directed Moon

Crispy

I vote that you check out Dogville. It’s really a unique kind of movie filled with an all star cast. Quite moving and experimental, you won’t forget the first time you see it.

Lost Films 90s Podcast

Night Watch (2004) - This is a really creative urban fantasy from Russia Also, from Sean's post above, I'd love to see your take on some Kurosawa. I don't think I have seen many people do Rashomon, so that would be a good one to start with.

Ernesto Maldonado

First Reformed.

George Ray

Incendies (2010) It's one of Denis Villeneuve's best even though it's less seen than his other movies (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Prisoners, Sicario, Enemy).

Nishant

Cold War - incredibly beautiful Polish romantic drama set to the backdrop of the cold war, shot in square format film Sunshine - one of my favourite sci-fi movies, directed by Danny Boyle and an underrated epic!

The Proposition and Badlands, both movies experimenting with genre conventions of the western and both visually stunning.

Cameron Berry

Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Rango. I noticed you don’t do much in terms of animation.

Matthew Richson

Police Story movies.

Justin McDonald

Five words: 'Sling Blade', Billy Bob Thornton.

Paul Phelan

Lawless ( Tom Hardy)

If you are going to do two movies a week, do one film that is more mainstream and do one that is more unique or less-known. That way you appease everyone, even tho it’s hard to do that. Being a budding filmmaker, a look at Fellini, Hitchcock and Kurosawa. Even throw in some anime films since those are highly influential in today’s sci fi et al.

Stranger than fiction ( Will Ferrell)

Lord of War (2005) - Nick Cage in one of his more subdued and serious roles as an up and coming arms dealer. Based on a true story. The Mask of Zorro (1998) - Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas in a fun classic adventure story based on the "proto-superhero" Zorro.

AgentFalcon

‘Frida’ (2002) a very artistic take on this biopic of the famous painter. ‘Belly’ (1998) cinematography was oscar-worthy to say the least.

Blood Diamond (2006) and Hostage (2005) both incredible movies and no one ever does them :)
