I can get behind Whiplash! It is a superb film

Extraction (2020)

I’m going to keep recommending Only God Forgives even if it never makes it on the poll again lol. Also going to recommend First Reformed because I feel it’s a Taxi Driver for our times (directed by the same writer too.)

Christopher Thwaites

Wings of Desire dir. by Wim Wenders Naked dir. by Mike Leigh.

Starship Troopers

The Cider House Rules and Wonder Boys are two of Tobey Maguires finest films.

"KES" and old english film. It's just a classic drama showcasing Yorkshire. "This is England" a brilliant time piece of England showing skinheads. "Watchmen" in my honest opinion the best "super hero" movie ever made.

Ronin (1998) Action/thriller - Robert De Niro / Jean Reno - awesome movie. Not enough people talk about this film, also has one of the best car chases in a movie.

Amélie (2001), Fear and loathing in las vegas (1998), Thank You for Smoking (2005)

Curse of the Golden Flower, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Science of Sleep

The Cell & The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

michael anderson

Which Suspiria? Original or remake?

Brittyn Lindsey

I've said it before and I'll continue to offer it up: In the Mood for Love. It has the same cinematographer as Hero and is stunning as well as wonderfully acted.

Triangle (2009)

Paprika, Satoshi Kon's final film Your Name, by Makoto Shinkai

Kero-chan

Yes, Ronin.

Brandon B.

BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 2017, DELICATESSEN 1991

Matt

James, Kung Fu Hustle -- Best Cinematography in a Comedy The Last Starfighter -- First use of CGI (Most likely for a remake)

Bd Blake

Macbeth (2015), Suspiria

Sean Turner

Three billboards outside ebbing Missouri. Already seen this suggested so I’m supporting that!

Pleasantville (1998) starring Toby Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, William H. Macy, and Joan Allen.

Luke Mattison

Seven Samurai, Fanny and Alexander.

Nocturnal Animals imo is one of the very best films of the 2010s. I never saw Tom Ford's first movie though. (Yes THAT Tom Ford, not my classmate I grew up with lol)

kimsmk

Ever see his last film? That's the only one I haven't watched yet. My fave is probably Solaris.

kimsmk

Every time I watch it I have a different opinion of it.

kimsmk

This movie really stays with you. I can't even figure out why it's so memorable and good. James could maybe help enlighten me?

kimsmk

The House That Jack Built (2018) or The Shining (1980) if you haven’t seen it already! :)

Lily

I haven't even finished Chinatown and I want him to see it. (And I know that's blasphemy)

kimsmk

Delicatessen was 🤯. I worked at a multiplex cinema when that came out and my manager wouldn't let me work the theatre that one was showing in because I was too young, but the other ushers used to sneak me in.

Walder Frey

Hey Victor! Smoke Signals is so dope.

kimsmk

Watching Brick is such an incredible feeling THAT NEVER GETS OLD. It's easily the best film recommendation I've ever gotten from a movie store employee.

kimsmk

Great movie

Layer Cake, Lord of War.

Edge of Tomorrow is amazing

Definitely Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Welcome to The Doll House (1995) dir. by Todd Solondz is a great dark comedy. Pather Panchali (1955) dir. by Satyajit Ray is an older film from India it's not a Bollywood film, it's Bengali. Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Akira Kurosawa are admirers of the director just to name a few. I am extremely curious what you'll think of these two films.

kimsmk

Equilibrium, Juno

Dan

Such a great film.

kimsmk

Everyone needs to see Withnail and I

kimsmk

Beasts of the Southern Wild is one of the very very best films of the 2010s. The Florida Project is amazing as well.

kimsmk

Once Upon A Time In The West (1968, Serge Leone) Amelie (2001, Jean-Pierre Jeunet)

Coleyra

The Graduate; Joy Luck Club

Juley

Definitely check out Silence by Martin Scorsese. One of the more compelling movies I've seen. And probably my favorite performance by Andrew Garfield to date!!

thomas clark

LMAOOOOOO 😂😂😂

James Adams

This is unrelated because it’s not a movie, but one of the best plays I’ve ever seen before was written by McDonagh called “The Pillowman” - I highly recommend looking it up and reading about it. It was dark, twisted, funny yet sad. When I saw it in NYC, it starred Billy Crudup and Michael Stuhlbarg. It was so good that I bought the script to re-read (since I can’t re-watch it!).

Brittyn Lindsey

I think you should check out Krisha. It is one of the best debut films I’ve ever seen. A family drama almost designed like a horror or suspense film and the soundtrack is gnarly! Excellent performance by the main actress as well.

Lost Films 90s Podcast

First Man The Martian

Jiri Luza

Brick and RocknRolla.

I'll contribute two Martin McDonagh films for consideration (both featuring one of my favorite actors, Sam Rockwell).... 1) Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 2) Seven Psychopaths Love what you do, James. All the best!

Steve W

Dark Waters (trailer does not do the movie justice) or Hot Fuzz, for the greater good

Jack Ryan

Jonathan thomas

Apocalypse Now True Romance The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Fincher edition)

John C

Me, Myself and Irene for the fun times :)

Monkey D. Gaddafi

Death of Stalin is hilarious, brilliant dark satire.

Ken

Gerald Kargl's 1983 movie "Angst" has really impressive camera work for its time. And harmony korines movie "Julian donkey boy". Last movie ( I know you said only two) lars von triers movie "Dancer in the Dark" it has a interesting way of mixing drama and musicals

Daboimiles

I love all 3 of those! Marie Antoinette is underrated, truly. Amazing costume design with really clever use of modern music.

Brittyn Lindsey

Once Upon A Time In The West (1968, Serge Leone) Ran (1985, from the master Kurosawa) Brazil (1985, Terry Gilliam) Delicatessen (1991, Jean-Pierre Jeunet) Contact (1997, Robert Zemeckis)

Paul Steffens

James - "One or two suggestions per person, please" A third of the people - "Here's a long list of my favorite trilogies"

Ken

Oh yes please

I would recommend Amelie, Juno or the Death of Stalin

These are both great

Ken

The Crow! Good choice.

The Fountain Stranger Than Fiction Lost In Translation Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Nick Parker

Adaptation!

"The Hunt" (2012 Danish film) and "Moonlight" (2016 film). I know you said only 1-2 films, but I have to recommend one of my personal favorites as an honorable mention: the 2006 film "Marie Antoinette" by Sofia Coppola.

Also Arrival, LOTR trilogy, Ready Player One

Edge of Tomorrow, Moulin Rouge, In the Mood for Love

Angie

Troy, Black Hawk Down, Legend, Lawless, The Signal, The Patriot, Honey Boy, Disturbia, The Town, Grandmas Boy.

I would recommend Network (1976), one of the best movies from the 70s that still feels relevant today

Nishant

First Reformed (2017)

FRANK (2014)

Sean Medellin

Sound of metal - Darius Marder Stalker - Andrei Tarkovsky The before tilogy - Richard Linklater

Seven Samurai because it's basically a master class in story telling, and The English Patient (1996) because it's moving and so beautifully shot.

Sonia Deepak

Chaplin, Gandhi, The Mission

Bronson or Nocturnal Animals

Glenna

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and if you want beautiful cinematography,,, The Fall

Cédric Tremblay

I have to recommend Ink. What they did with the budget they had, excellence.

Chad Crayton

It would be cool to see a reaction to an Andrei Tarkovsky film. He may be my favorite filmmaker but there doesn't seem to be much reaction to him on Youtube. I'd recommend Stalker or The Mirror.

Cameron Berry

True Romance Fantastic Mr. Fox

GoodDocGonzo

Schindlers List

Ali S.

I would like to recommend again Climax (2018) and Stalker (1979).

Inside Llewyn Davis. I promise you will love it.

It Follows and Lost Highway

The Elephant Man

Gillian Hadland

The Fountain. Absolute masterpiece. You will cry.

Rev Jragon

Kick-Ass / Eyes Wide Shut

Brazil, 1985, directed by Terry Gilliam. Awesome flick that doesn’t have a YouTube reaction from anyone!

Mitchy D

Harold and Maude, Ronin

Randall Bott

Rocknrolla and Deliverance

Who knew @WalderFrey was a fan of the graduate 😂

Paul Boden

Cheating, as I've already made my requests but I can't help myself. If you haven't seen it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. Really out there but truly excellent film in my mind. On that Jim Carey kick, 'Jim and Andy' is a documentary about the making of Man on the Moon, which I actually found more interesting than the film itself in a lot of ways. Perhaps a tad pretentious in parts, I found it a challenging watch in places (if you've seen it, I'm sure you'll understand why) but it's a truly fascinating watch. I'd argue a must for anyone genuinely fascinated with the process of making movies (especially from the actors perspective).

Paul Boden

Triangle (2009) and Withnail & I (1987)

2old4gamez

Second the the Edge of Tomorrow shout from @martinoverngen as well. Always felt that movie deserves more love than it gets. Really excellent little sci-fi that seems to have slipped under the radar for a lot of people

Paul Boden

Brittyn Lindsey

Im going to limit myself to two suggestions. 13 Assassins (2011) a samurai film by Japanese enfant terrible Takeshi Miike. And The Wild Bunch (1969) western by Sam Peckinpah. Reading through some of these comments there are some great suggestions truly fellow Patreons. Shout outs to these patreons and their suggestions. Heathers @patrick, Pans Labyrinth @chickenlegs Inside Man @Chuck, Before Sunrise @chriswarner, edge of tomorrow @martinoverngen, Legend @PaulBoden, Persona is one of my fav movies ever @nickmoose Apocalypse Now @richard Akhtar-Dobson

Marvelous Dolcy

Beasts of the Southern Wild - underrated indie movie filmed on a $2 million dollar budget but managed to snag Oscar noms for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Best Actress for Quvenzhané Wallis, who I believe is the youngest person to ever get nominated for best actress at 9 years old. Also one of my favorite original soundtracks of all time. I'll also nominate The Florida Project, the movies have similar vibes.

Only the Brave was SO good. I saw that and Thank You for Your Service a few weeks apart in theaters and Miles Teller blew me away in both. Cried my eyes out!

It's an amazing experience, although I think it has a bunch of different cuts, kinda like Blade Runner. I know the shooting of the film was a mess

🙌

Antonio Ivic

Robin Williams, Ed Norton and many more great dark comedy

DABSLABOG

I highly recommend the 1979 war movie “apocalypse now” it not only contains some of the most impressive and influential shots and technical feats but also a gritty and telling story with deeply rooted psychological aspects on the darkness of humanity.

Daron yao

Fallen angels by Wong Kar Wai is amazing. And 8 1/2, it's about a director with writer's block (and so much more), classic meta cinema. Oh and that's where Tarantino got the Mia/Vincent dancing scene shot from
