What’s happening lids

It’s Adam here. We’ve addressed this a few times on episodes but I think we need to put a post up like this so that nobody can miss it.

We’ve had a few comments on the latest Patreon special about the amount of adverts on it and the fact that’s there’s any on there at all, being annoying.

I can’t stress this enough; WE HAVE NEVER AND WILL NEVER PUT ADVERTS ON A PATREON SPECIAL, WE DO NOT MONETIZE THEM AT ALL ON YOUTUBE.

Here’s what has happened on this special and on a couple of previous ones. As I understand it.

When you upload a video to YouTube, their automated system scans it and checks whether you’ve used anyone else’s copyrighted material. It gives us an initial response of “seems okay” and we release the special. Once it’s getting views, it gets a much more fine tooth comb check.

If there’s absolutely anything that is copyrighted by anyone, especially music, then we get hit with a strike. The music can literally be being played in a pub that we’re sat in the beer garden of; if the camera picks it up (EVEN IF THE HUMAN EAR CAN NOT HEAR IT) then the whole video becomes owned by whoever owns that music.

So let’s say Robbie Williams Angels is playing in the background of one of our videos, it will be sent to his legal team by YouTube and they will go “ay this podcast is using your music in their video, do you want us to delete it or do you want us to monetize it and give you all the money?”

They absolutely always choose to monetize. YouTube will then offer them different amount of ads to put on and they absolutely always choose the absolute maximum. Because why wouldn’t they? They don’t give a fuck, they just want as much as possible.

It’s fucking infuriating. We do absolutely everything we possibly can to avoid it ever happening but sometimes we miss something.

It drives us just as mad as it drives you mad. We will continue to do everything we can to minimise this happening.
