(Timeline Tuesday #207)
Gridcrawlers are bizarre serpentine creatures from a nearby timeline. Their body is long and slender, covered in scales and exhibiting a dull green coloration. Gridcrawler bellies are smooth, allowing the creature to slide along the ground in a distinct winding motion, which propels them forward. Their backs are generally spotted, but not all gridcrawlers have this distinction.
Of course, the most notorious thing about gridcrawlers are their massive, spherical head. Atop the body of this species rests a round, mirrored globe, similar in appearance to the disco balls of our timeline. These odd craniums function in a comparable way, constructed from biological material but reflective and shiny.
Before hunting their prey, a gridcrawler will smother their head in dirt, mud and debris, dulling its shine. While the bulbous nature of their dome is still apparent, their glint is extremely reduced during this time, allowing the creatures to slither up behind their natural prey of birds, insects or small rodents. Once the gridcrawler is in position it will whip it head back and forth at an incredible speed, the dirt falling away to reveal several panels of mirrored intensity. The shine is so powerful that it will stun and disorient prey, temporarily blinding them and allowing the gridcrawler to make its attack. Typically these creatures hunt by bludgeoning there meals, then slowly consuming them through a small, mouthlike slit in the grids.
