Pentells are a species of insect that have evolved to appear similar to the standard pencils used on this timeline, as well as the pencils of their home reality. These creatures have six legs and an unusually long body that terminates in a sharp point. Their head is cylindrical, with a flat face upon which two eyes and a mandible mouth rest. They are yellow in coloration, with a light pink head and a band of grey around their central body. Pentells are covered in a hard carapace, which is used to protect their internal organs.
Pentells consume paper to live, and their nests are often found near areas of large paper consumption. Offices and schools are the most common habitats of pentells. Unfortunately, their diet also makes them a huge nuisance, and once a single pentell is discovered, there are likely more nearby.
The most interesting thing about pentells is the way that they communicate with one another. They cannot produce sound, but they are adept at drawing symbols with their tails. These symbols provide a complex language with which the creatures speak. They are still insects that lack higher intelligence, but despite this their language is quite impressive.
Even more interesting than the communication symbols is the pentell’s natural disposition towards art. If left to their own devices, pentells will often sketch things they have seen or draw elaborate memories. On rare occasion, pentells will even produce something wholly original and dreamlike, suggesting the awakening of a self-aware mind within this species.
Unfortunately, discovering pentell drawings inside the walls or behind furniture is usually the first step towards a nest being discovered and exterminated.
