(Timeline Tuesday #164)
Baloflies are a species of large, flying humanoid from a nearby timeline. Standing approximately seven feet tall, they are extremely lanky, with slender limbs and arms that hang well past their waistline. This species features three fingers on each hand and two toes on each foot, and their entire body is covered in leathery, light grey skin. Their heads are wide and oval-shaped with two enormous yellow eyes and a set of sunken nostrils. They do not have mouths, but instead gather food through a giant, foot-long proboscis that’s kept rolled up within their jaw.
While the central frame of a balofly is notoriously muted, their wings are known for their incredible color and vibrance. These giant wings are similar in shape to those of a butterfly, and appear in a seemingly endless variety of patterns.
Baloflies do not speak and rarely interact with the creatures of this timeline. In fact, the vast majority of Baloflies are terrified of humans, and will flutter away the moment they encounter one. This is unfortunate, as the two species have developed an unexpectedly wholesome symbiotic relationship.
While baloflies survive on a diet of pollen on their home timeline, none of the common flowers of our reality are large or hearty enough to sustain them. Fortunately, hummingbird feeders have served as a perfect replacement. These glass or plastic tubes of sugar water are so common across suburban neighborhoods that baloflies have been able to survive and flourish in our reality, adding beauty and wonder to the neighborhoods they inhabit.
