(Timeline Tuesday #120)
Hypnoflies are a species of insect from a nearby timeline. They are small—approximately one inch across—and circular. Their bodies are a specific hue of pale pink, and from these bodies four lavender wings protrude. These wings flutter wildly, buzzing at incredible speeds as they carry the hypnofly from place to place. Because most flying species on this timeline feature only two wings, observing hypnoflies can be a beautiful sight to behold.
Much more unique than the movement of hypnofly wings, however, is the movement of their bodies. The back of this species is covered with small organs for sight, smell and sound, but the whole front portion is made up of a spiral pattern. This design is built directly into the hard carapace of the creature.
Hypnoflies possess an uncanny power of hypnotism and suggestion, which they use on any sentient target they can find. Upon encountering a hypnofly it will flutter directly into a target’s field of vision, spinning its body and causing the spiral pattern to rotate. Those who quickly avert their eyes will be unaffected, but anyone who gazes upon the hypnofly will find themselves lost in a trance.
This trance lasts for approximately one minute. Once the trance is complete, the target will immediately feel hungry, regardless of whether or not they’ve eaten recently. They will do anything they can to find a meal, even driving for several miles to obtain food. Once this food has been procured, the target will be stricken with a desire to bring it back to the spot where they initially encountered their hypnofly. This initial encounter will not be remembered without the help of mental regression techniques.
Through this method, hyponoflies will have plenty of leftover meals and food scraps delivered to any location they please. It’s believed that many common picnic spots were founded due to the presence of hypnoflies in the area.
