EGGSNAKE - TIMELINE #87293361001

(Timeline Tuesday #67)

Eggsnakes are bizarre lifeforms from a distant timeline. In many ways they resemble the common snake from our reality, featuring a long body without arms or legs that ends in a slender tail. These creatures are covered in scales, and while they can range in a variety of earth-tone colors, their usual hue is a vibrant green.

The most notable difference, however, is the eggsnake’s bulbous head, which is large and oval in shape. This smooth, featureless bulb is similar in size and appearance to a chicken’s egg, although it is much sturdier. It is not uncommon for this small creature to find itself thrown or crushed and continue on as though nothing ever happened, which actually makes the hard shell of its head more of a blessing than a curse. An eggsnake that might otherwise be smashed under a rock can sometimes be saved thanks to its sturdy head taking the brunt of the weight.

The procreation habits of this creature are quite unique. When eggsnakes grow old they begin a specific journey, seeking out other creatures and observing them. Eggsnakes are not drawn to any particular species, and their choice of other creature’s appears unique to each eggsnake. Once the target is found, this creature will lie in wait, watching from afar until the target creature falls asleep. At this point the eggsnake will slither over and quietly rub its shell across the target before quickly retreating.

Within a week, the shell will soften and crack open, killing the eggsnake but creating a young replica of their target creature. This creature will grow exceptionally fast, reaching adulthood and matching the size of its original within twenty four hours. The eggsnake replica will possess limited intelligence, unable to communicate with others of its species. It will, however, look exactly like the original. They will even share a replicated DNA structure.

For approximately one month the replicated creature will exist in our world, wandering around and exploring its surroundings. Sometimes this can cause problems for the original, but now that the existence of eggsnakes is common knowledge, these awkward situations are easier to sort out. After a month, the replica will vomit forth a brood of five to ten new eggsnakes, which will all slither away and start this process over again. The replica will die soon after.

It is unknown if an eggsnake replica is a brand new sentience, or a continuation of the eggsnake who hatched it.
