SUGARMOTH - TIMELINE #2413

(Timeline Tuesday #65)

Sugarmoths are a species of winged insect from a nearby timeline, who behave in a way that is very similar to the moths of our reality. Unlike natural moths, however, Sugarmoths fly with their mantis-like head tilted forward, and instead of the pale coloration one my typically expect, their wings feature vibrant pink spots.

Closer examination does reveal one unusual feature of this gentle species. Everywhere the Sugarmoth flies it leaves behind a fine, crystalline trail of edible sugar. This sugar trail can wax and wane over the lifespan of this creature, although it’s typically the thickest when a Sugarmoth is ready for its second metamorphosis.

Sugarmoths have a familiar lifecycle, moving from a pink caterpillar, to a cocoon, to a winged insect. However, at the end of their life they undergo yet another transformation. During this time a Sugarmoth will create its second cocoon, disappearing within this unique, sugary substance. The cocoon itself is edible, offering the consistency of cotton candy.

Eventually, this cocoon will fall away. The life of the Sugarmoth will have ended, but the resulting transformation creates a beautiful pink candy. This incredible, and highly-sought-after treat is oval and hard, and the flavor is distinct in a way that most find indescribable. Many people claim the closest approximation is a mixture of strawberry and butterscotch.

Because real Sugarmoths are the only way to produce this candy, it is very expensive and regarded as a luxury food item. To the delight of customers, many high end candy shops will breed Sugarmoths and allow these insects to flutter around their store. After their second metamorphosis, these insects will be harvested and sold.
