Lovelorns are a species of pale, gaunt humanoid. They have unusually long arms and legs, giving them a vaguely frightening appearance, and they mouth constantly hangs open in an extended, gaping maw. The creatures have no nose, and their eyes are featureless black orbs. In other words, lovelorns are quite spooky to those who are unfamiliar with this species.
Unfortunately, their scary appearance does not match the lifestyle of these creatures. Lovelorns are a kind species, non-violent by nature and deeply motivated by expressing their love. This love is not necessarily romantic, although it can be. Typically, lovelorns are simply trying to brighten the day of those around them, spreading as much joy as possible.
Lovelorns will often bring gifts, or offer favors to those they meet, working tirelessly to deliver heart-shaped chocolate boxes to entire neighborhoods or leaving kind notes in mailboxes. These efforts are typically appreciated if the subject does not interact with a lovelorn directly. However, those who meet a lovelorn face to face are often frightened by this encounter. The creatures are not capable of speech, instead communicating through haunting shrieks and moans that other lovelorns can understand, but humans find quite distressing.
Because of all this, the life of an average lovelorn is quite lonesome, if not downright tragic. They are in a constant state of yearning for love and affection, yet rarely able to find it.
