VINEER - TIMELINE #198770294

(Timeline Tuesday #43)

Music is a deep and primal expression that humans have developed over thousands of years, but in all this time our connection to song still pales in comparison to that of the vineer.

Vineer are two to three foot fall humanoid creatures, featuring a pair of arms and legs that lead to three fingered digits. These fingers are long and pointed, without nails yet hardened at the tip. Their skin is pale and their backs are spotted with colorful dots. The hue of these markings is dependent on the color of their central head.

The cranium of a vineer is its most notable feature, a flat black disk with several grooves that wrap around its circumference. It appears similar to, and functions like, a vinyl record. The central portion of this disk is what gives the vineer their coloration, and at the middle of it all is a sharp, boney post upon which the whole thing can freely spin.

Because they have no facial sensory organs, vineers use their powerful psychic abilities to sense the world around them. They can, however, produce sound.

Over the course of their lives, vineers develop several audio recordings within their head, naturally growing these grooves over time. As they age, they will develop new recordings, with varying degrees of complexity. These sounds are played when a vineer spins its head and holds one of their hard, pointy fingers against the groove to produce sound. Both sides of a vineer’s cranium will grow grooves.

In the early stages of a vineer’s life they will produce recordings that sound like common phrase: yes, no, thank you, please, and help are all common. Eventually, they will evolve sentences. Later in the life of these creatures, whole musical scores will form, songs used for things that range from mating rituals to drones of mourning.
