Patreon Taste: Western Show Comp
Added 2022-06-02 00:28:17 +0000 UTCWhat is a favorite Western show you’ve enjoyed and how do you think it represents the type of Kdramas you love…or maybe doesn’t at all?

2022-06-10 17:27:09 +0000 UTCForgot to mention that I watch a fair bit of the big sci-fi/fantasy universes. Star wars and MCU stuff mostly. I am not a typical Star Wars fan though, bc I don't have as much nostalgia for the original movies. My favorite Star Wars content by far is the Rebels animated show (such good characterization and much more depth than a lot of the movies) and Rogue One. I think MCU content is consistently very good. I have yet to be bored or disappointed by anything they have done.

2022-06-03 02:46:00 +0000 UTCWell, someone beat me to Magicians, but that's definitely up there. I have really enjoyed some sci-fi shows including Babylon 5 (from the way back times) and the more recent Battlestar Galactica. Farscape is another one that's older that I have revisited. Definitely grew up in a Star Trek household because my dad is super into sci-fi, and also an actual scientist. Something I have realized from watching kdramas is that while I love most 'speculative fiction' I am more engaged with it if there is romance. I'm trying to figure out why that is. Tomorrow was an interesting exception that I very much enjoyed in spite of how angst heavy it was. I guess there was enough substantial character growth that I was satisfied. But in general I seem to really need the hook of romance. Same with western shows, but I find the multi season stop and go of western shows so obnoxious now, I'm having a hard time going back :p

2022-06-02 23:55:17 +0000 UTCI love a crime procedural - and especially one with a romance, like I LOVED bones. I also love West Wing and most things Aaron Sorkin wrote because highly articulate people who speak fast whilst walking is a thing for me --- but there aren't KDrama comps for me. In a way what I enjoy most about KDrama is what Western shows DON'T do well - really good, not afraid to be tropey RomComs, whole 16-episode dramas centred around a romance and positive slice-of-life dramas. British TV most especially is at its best when it's cynical and raw and a bit dark, so I also need Kdrama to be an anthithesis of that!

2022-06-02 21:06:52 +0000 UTCSome of my favorites are Magicians, Peaky Blinders, Golden Compass, , Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Jane the Virgin, Dead to Me, Zooey's Extraordinary Playlist, Downton Abbey, Lucifer, Greenleaf. So I guess I'm pretty eclectic with a strong slant toward quirky, character driven stories and a hardy helping of fantasy. Seems consistent with Kdramas broadly.

2022-06-02 15:36:09 +0000 UTCSuch an interesting question, but it’s a puzzle for me, because I watch so little Western TV now and haven’t for quite a while. Much like Madge Doty’s comment above. When I do watch something in passing or because friends recommend it, generally I find it boring and lacking in the kind of character development that is so engaging and satisfying in Kdramas. That’s especially true for me of US shows, but the Brits do dramas much better than the US.

2022-06-02 15:33:17 +0000 UTCWait wait wait! I forgot about You and The Boys! I DO watch and enjoy some Western tv. 🤦♀️ Shouldn’t post in the middle of the night when I have insomnia…sorry sorry. 😅

2022-06-02 10:09:43 +0000 UTCI’m a fan of cleverness, and genre, and so my Western show happy place was circa ~20 years ago. Certain episodes of The X-Files, and all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Supernatural seasons 1-5 (even up through season 7) all hit the right spot. Then there’s Hannibal, but not for the reasons a lot of people like that show, and the brilliant season 2 of Fargo…hyper-real, magical, clever shows that are perfectly realized…nom nom nom. I was originally drawn to kdramas by a sense of nostalgia, and for my love of a good story, and stayed for the storytelling. I love supernatural kdramas, because genre, I suppose, but I watch them very differently than I do Western tv. I’m a pandemic watcher, so I’ve been watching for three years now; I started with 100 Days My Prince (not CLOY like so many!), and haven’t looked back. Currently I’m watching Now, Showtime! or whatever that show is called, and it’s delightful and comforting and has just gotten better as it’s gone on. It’s supernatural, so that’s similar to my Western tv tastes, I suppose. lol (and is everything I wanted from Tomorrow and didn’t get). It’s a good example of my kdrama happy place, actually. My other kdrama happy place is sageuks; those hanboks and what they hide…whew! ❤️ This was a great question, thanks for posting it! Made me think about how I haven’t watched any Western tv in three years and counting. That’s kinda wild….

2022-06-02 10:06:33 +0000 UTCReally enjoyed Derry Girls, Ted Lasso, The Morning Show. Schitts Creek, Parks and Rec, Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife, The Crown, Bridgerton, are other favourites. Fleabag is at the top of the list tho, I thought it was BRILLIANT! The Hot Priest episodes were fantastic. When I talk about kdramas to my friends ( for the 5 minutes they can tolerate) I say there are kdramas as well written/acted as Fleabag.
