The Sound of Magic (spoilers)

We are recording a pod on the new Netflix drama The Sound of Magic starring Ji Chang Wook.

Is there anything you want to ask or get off your chest regarding this drama.

I won’t say much. I’m saving my rant for the pod lol

I’m coming to this a month after everyone else I know, but I just have to say you’re so right about the scene with the little kids! So weird!

Nicole H

Will there be a season 2? Should there be a season 2?

Claudia Copeland

Why was it.

Lorna

Why was it a musical?

Hannah

What was that and why? It was dark and had existential dread which was neither resolved nor embraced by the ending. Did they think losing characters (literally, figuratively, and ambiguously in the case of the mom) was a happy ending?

Hannah

I did find that Father storyline that most galling. First you are given the impression that she had this idyllic childhood with her father to than turn and have him turn out to be a complete POS who abandons and steals from his teenage daughter. Than you end with them being a family again…yeah NO, I need a real come to Jesus moment for that man.

Erin Miseyko

While I liked the drama overall I did feel like this was a much darker drama than was publicized with a murder subplot to boot. I also felt like there was a lot less JCW than I was expecting. By the end I do feel like there were some Mach size plot holes that weren’t addressed or just plain glossed over.

Erin Miseyko

Haha. I really liked, almost loved this drama -- plot holes be damned. It was surprising and weird. I didn't need it to be anything other than it was -- a story about pushing against expectations and finding your own way. Believable? No, but I didn't care. I was glad it was only six episodes though, definitely didn't have legs for more. Probably could have been four actually. Also I was just thankful they didn't have JCW fall in love with a teenager or vice versa. I'm pretty over that in kdramas. YAY! for that.

Becky

Is it true JCW was a theater kid? Did the Korean audience enjoy it?

Lorna

The show starts by presenting severe hardships experienced by the kids and caused by the adults. The show ends "magically" with these hardships resolved (but not really). The father who abandoned his children and came home briefly to steal from them, is now back in their lives and they're on relatively good terms. Why? How? Just no! The student who was under pressure to excel in all subjects to the point where he was experiencing migraines and possibly suicidal is shown simply dropping out and walking away from school - shouldn't there have been some middle ground and a scene in which his parents acknowledged that they were pushing him too hard and not supporting him? I thought the acting was good, the musical numbers were okay (but not memorable), and the conclusion was just bananas.

Kathi

I want to know why I watched this whole thing.

I still like JCW a lot. I did not appreciate how his hair was styled with the tophat. I liked the singing. I liked the after the credits bows. I do not get how there was a mini audience of little kids at one point for whom JCW performed magic....how/why did they go to the creepy place? Did their guardians collect them afterwards at the creaky rusty park gates? Another moment to suspend disbelief? In a show full of moments like that....... And the kdrama trope of teenager left at home to care for sibling AND go to school and be bullied AND work to pay rent and for food AND the irresponsible parent also steals from them....did that really happen in SK at some point and now it's dragged out to lend pathos??? I am watching Woori the Virgin for some lightheartedness and a J-tv reality dating show called Future Diary ..season 1 is super cute and adorable. Both of these a nice contrast to SoM.
