BTS…A Rabbit Hole

Hey Patreon! So today’s podcast was a little different because it was not about K-drama but BTS. Specifically how four 40-50 something ladies got on this highway to sweet hell and are never looking for the off-ramp.

If any of you have been suffering over BTS love…today this is a thread for you to share your feels in a safe space.

If any of you are like…wtf won’t Lia shut up about BTS…you can ask questions here or just silently view the discussion lol.

There is much to unpack. At this point I feel as if I’m doing grad school on both Kdrama and BTS…working on a PhD in Female Gaze and Fun 💜💜💜

BTS…A Rabbit Hole

Comments

Yes! I was going to rewatch this weekend too, thanks to the pod. I saw it before I went down the BTS rabbit hole, and it was funny then. Will be even better now.

I rewatched Carpool Karaoke after hearing you gals talk about it on the podcast. It is so hilarious (Jhope is adorable). But the best part which I had totally forgotten is the ending when the boys dropped into a suburban LA dance class, joined in, and Jimin took a turn at leading the class. Incredible.

This thread fills my heart ya’ll —Lia

Everyone's comments are so intelligent and hilarious and heart warming and interesting. Thank you all for sharing! I am a 63 year old who discovered BTS when scrolling thru YOUTUBE The Office blooper clips. My first thought was that their dancing was incredible and the music was really grabbing my attention. Once I discovered the dance practice videos, and concert clips, that was it, I was IN LOVE! I acquired a Spotify account and played SO much BTS on a road trip in the fall of 2020. And guess what the YouTube BTS algorithm lead me to??? LOL, kdrama obsession and the Afternoonas Delight podcast, and the chance to chat with like-minded people. I am still amazed by the joyfulness/artistry of BTS' music, the excitement of their dancing, and the emotions brought out by my favourite songs. A very good thing to come out of the pandemic for me...........

These are great questions and I'm still learning too. If you live in the States you can pre order from Target... I did it yesterday. There are also preorders available on Amazon. Weverse has some crazy shipping costs, so just be careful of that.

Loved the pod today! I lived in Asia and visited Korea several times in the early 90’s but never really got the K-pop love for myself until bts. I found the rabbit hole before the pandemic, but not by much and didn’t really know much about the members until carpool karaoke. Like many of you, I now have multiple bts playlists, favorite run bts episodes and daily bts instagram reel time. But there’s still a lot about the fandom I don’t know how to access - like where do you preorder albums? Should I get vlive and weverse (are they different things?). I have sons not all that much younger than the members (17 and 20) so I find myself most drawn to their love for each other and personalities.

We were there with youuuuuuuu. And don’t forget those dimples

enjoyed the pod--kamsamida! we went to the last saturday concert, area 15! Army is like the disneyland (best quality of all amusement parks experiences) of fandoms. bias is rm for his intelligence, ability to speak english, love of riding his bike and his gaze into the camera--sigh

tku

I think anyone should totally be allowed to say that. Army is such a fierce fanbase that others have observed that it can be really hard to voice any kind of critique, which is not a good thing. You make such a great point that their personalities are a big part of the pull--the members are so interesting and charismatic and prolific with content that it makes them really "addictive" in a way that is not always true for other groups that are also really talented and professional.

Yesssss welcome sister! And Christmas Tree is PERFECT place to start this “This V”

Oh geez, the BTS IG rabbit hole is real!

Nicole H

I like BTS and really enjoy dancing in my kitchen to their songs. I’m still learning all their works but I love Boys With Luv and Life goes On. It made me look at other Asian artists and I listen to a wide range now. The problem lies in “mistakenly” watching a clip on Instagram and an hour later…😭😳

Daisy

As usual, this is the pod topic I didn’t know I needed (going to finish listening to it this afternoon). 😊 I only recently stumbled into BTS via the Our Beloved Summer OST. I’ve been mildly obsessed with that OST since it came out, especially V’s Christmas Tree. And I was like (don’t laugh), “Who is this V? Have they done anything else?” 😂😂 Fast forward a couple months and I’ve now downloaded the V Live app and cap off most evenings watching BTS-related reels on IG (while wondering how I got here as a late 30-something and trying not to think too hard about my age floor). Still have lots to learn (did I have to Google “bias”? Yes, yes I did.) and lots of their music to catch up on, but just settling in for the ride at this point.

Nicole H

I didn't pre-order the album at first, but now that they announced the demos... I am very very tempted

Lisa H

I'm so excited to finally add Born Singer to my 8 hours long BTS playlist !! It's also changes a lot for me, but right now I like listening to the older albums (Tomorrow is a big favourite of mine) and the japanese songs (I love love love Let Go)

Lisa H

What are everyone's current song obsessions? Mine change every several days but I'm currently on Born Singer (like a lot of people after the disc 1 announcement) and 00:00 (Zero O'Clock).

Antonina (Tonya)

Are you all excited for the anthology? I wasn't sure what to think at first but I knew whatever they did would be more special and thoughtful and original than any anthology ever done before, and it's true. All those demos on disc three--I can't believe it.

Antonina (Tonya)

I think their personalities are really what makes the big difference. Am I allowed to say that music wise I find it all a little generic and rather same same? But having said that they entirely hit "where it is at" so to speak and so are doing an amazing job at knowing their market and totally hitting their market sweet spot - which of itself is impressive given the wide range of people who just love who they are and what they do.
