Sunday Shout: Trope Talk

What is a romance trope that you can’t get enough of watching/reading?

Here are a few to get your brains going:

Friends to Lovers

Forced Proximity

Fake Relationship

Enemies to Lovers

Marriage of Convenience

Accidental Pregnancy/Secret Baby/Suddenly Parents

Second Chance Romance

Best Friend's Brother/Sister

Alien Hero

Amnesia

Beauty and the Beast

Boss and Secretary

Love Triangle

Time Traveller

…this is by no means an exhaustive list!

For me (Lia): I really enjoy writing forced proximity and enemies-to-lovers. And plots I’ll often check out in Kdrama are hidden gender (King’s Affection is nailing this trope at the moment and Coffee Prince is a perennial favorite). I also am a masochist who can’t say no to a really good love triangle.

My favorite tropes are: forced proximity, fake relationship, and enemies to lovers. Also give me a gruff hero and a down on her luck heroine every day! I eat that right up.

I am watching Our Beloved Summer too. It's the kind of delightful that had me exclaiming at the TV when I saw I had to wait a week for the next episodes. I agree....enemies to lovers and back again is a fun trope to watch.

I just watched the first 2 episodes of Our Beloved Summer. I find it delightful so far and seems to be an enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers plot.

I love how specific this one is LOL! I have seen secret revenge leading to love but not this exact story— do you have any examples? -Lia

The fated mates is SUCH a trope. As is that childhood connection!! I don’t mind fated mates, but I think it’s one of the reasons ensembles started to resonate with me a lot in second half of year because I wanted something different - Lia

My Roommate is a Gumiho was a little like that.

It seems like one of the most ubiquitous tropes for K-dramas is fated lovers. I like it but I don't know whether I've ever seen one that sort of rejects the trope, for example, where the character that would normally be the SML ends up as the ML in the end. Are there any I don't know of? One that maybe came close was Start-Up because the SML was the character with the childhood connection to the FL. I'd love to see a good drama that turns the fate trope upside down and goes for the SML. :)

Antonina (Tonya)

Secret revenge? I guess that's an offshoot of enemies to lovers. My absolute favorite plot point is when a person enters a relationship (work or romance) to get revenge or to simply avoid danger and the person whom you think is the male lead - turns out to not be the male lead. And, at the end of the story, they have some regret at letting the female lead character go.

One reason HP hooked me so much was that it had three great story lines of this kind. Winter Garden got me the most because I found Jang Gyeoul so relatable, but I loved them all.

This is Lea…I also really love the “oh no it’s really cold and we are trapped in this cabin and must take off our clothing and cuddle for warmth.” Meteor Garden (C-drama remake of Boys over Flowers) does a chef’s kiss version of this

A SML with unrequited love will ALWAYS get me, like Lee Hee-Kyung in My Love From The Star. -Megan

This is Megan and forced proximity with OH NO, THERE'S ONLY ONE BED! will forever be my favorite thing, haha.

There’s an old one called Sassy girl Choon Hyang with that trope. It is a modern day version of a famous Korean folk lore. It was full of tropes, but I remember it being cute.

Jules

And WinterGarden and Iksung couple from HP too!!

Oh another one which I do get lots of in KDrama is long time unrequited love, like one of them has liked the other for AGES, like pre the drama starting or for a whole series. So hi GomGom couple of Hospital Playlist and the beginning of suspicious partner

My all time fave is Marriage of Convenience, I’ll never tire of it and probably my 3 of my 10 all time fave romances are all marriage of convenience - and all historical - (Devil in Winter, Devil is the Marquess and A Marriage made in Scandal) But actually haven’t seen that many KDramas with this trope - just 2 - Because this is my first life (which was excellent) and 1% of something (which really wasn’t) — but also extends now to Fake Dating - I haven’t read as much romance since I’ve been on my kdrama journey but I did really enjoy The Love Hypothesis I also enjoy a Beauty & the Beast retelling, as well as Cyrano de Bergerac trope - and any where they write lots of letters to each other.
