Great reaction. In space, noone can hear you scream - but through a set of headphones, it'll blow your head off. The scene towards the end in which Ripley finds the alien nest is one of the scenes that isn't in the theatrical version, but was reinstated for the director's cut. I've never really cared for the scene, myself, for the same reasons you touched upon. Not only does it add little to the story - Brett and Dallas are in the process of turning into eggs - it kills the pacing. Ripley's set the self-destruct and is on the clock; so she wastes time and risks attracting the alien in mercy killing Dallas and Brett, even though the ship is going to blow anyway. I've made my own 'private cut' of the film, which is basically this version minus that nest scene. I've kept the other main scene which was also not in the theatrical version, which is Lambert slapping Ripley after they get back aboard. That's a vital character moment. If you ever get a chance, you might want to check out the first person game Alien: Isolation, which is an original story and a direct continuation of Alien. It keeps all the design aesthetics and the tension of the movie, plus it fixes a minor plot hole in the sequel movie, Aliens.
