I hear what you say about being limited in terms of effects, but it makes up for it in terms of moments to build suspense, creating surreal and utterly alien sequences, and add to the mystery of what this show was, and who this Doctor was. This was game changing stuff for 1963. And actually it’s pretty genius some of the effects they did use. What they did for time vortex to give it that contorted moving appearance of shapes and flowing patterns was achieved by pointing the TV camera down its own monitor. The TARDIS noise? The distorted noise of scraping keys up and down old piano strings. Although it wasn’t quite the same show as it became by the time it was revived in 2005. It was commissioned more than anything as a sci-fi vehicle of a programme to be educational for a younger audience in terms of history and so forth. It was only through audience reaction, and certain aspects being introduced that it began to take shape as the show about fun or scary adventure through time and space.
