The Lost Art of Rice Negotiation - Survivor Burning Question
Added 2023-04-29 16:49:13 +0000 UTCAfter Episode 9 of Survivor 44, we are back with another Survivor Burning Question.
This week, Rob Cesternino does a deep dive into the history of food negotiations. And, ultimately, the classic and expected twist on Day 16 of every Survivor season where castaways negotiate with Jeff Probst for rice of various portions.
How has food negotiations evolved in the Survivor game over Survivor history?
Jeff Probst has been tempting Survivors with food since the very first season, in Survivor: Africa, continued through Survivor: Amazon, Survivor: Blood Vs. Water, and Survivor: Redemption Island.
But, the game was forever changed when Angelina Keeley on Survivor: David Vs. Goliath negotiated with Jeff for more rice for her tribe, in exchange for sitting out of a challenge.

The rice negotiations are so boring, but this breakdown was fascinating, Rob. I never liked the coconut chopping (or similar) episodes because it made me so uncomfortable to see the more powerful players with the big egos eliminate the players that were at the bottom. I might be too empathetic, but those episodes were some of the worst for me to watch. Like I already mentioned the current rice negotiations are so boring. It was fun when Angelina did it because it was new and unexpected. I just want them to go back to tempting the players to leave the game with food options that keep getting better and better. Oh and poor Steven #severegastrointestinaldistress :)

I would also like to see someone negotiate for more people to sit out for more rice and a blind reveal of who chose to sit out (like revealing a rock of a specific color). I’d love to see everyone sit out but one so that person gets default immunity. Also, it would be interesting if it was revealed that only the people that sat out could eat the rice. I’m sure Danny got off of his high horse to eat the rice the others provided for him.
