Kyle, your take on the Catholic-centric fear layering is right on par with my take.
To add to your dissection of this movie, THE EXORCIST takes a "head-on" approach, showing the physical manifestation of the Devil - the Devil needs a human body as a conduit to directly offend man (and God) and also to show humanity (and God) the power he can still display - ultimately, inflicting direct and indirect pain, fear, and confusion on one of "God's sheep". Incredible in camera SPFX and SPMKFX, Friedkin gets you uncomfortable quickly and holds you there right to the end - THE EXORCIST is brute force.
THE OMEN goes another route. The Devil is here...in the body of a boy. Through the veil of innocence, youth, and small size, the Devil slowly builds its strategy. Through incredible sound design (as an example, the telekinesis between man and beast) and the performances of the cast (the gaze of that fuckin' Nanny, Mrs. Baylock), Donner also gets you uncomfortable and holds you there.
Both films have scores that are still, almost 50 years later, considered benchmarks for this genre.
Cheers,
Todd
