So glad you went down this path of great '80s films. As always, your real-time analysis/reactions are right on par with where the director is leading you - albeit a few surprises still came your way.
PREDATOR is a perfect example and study in character development, geography in action, pacing, and for that matter, all creative choices. This was only John McTiernan's 2nd feature film as director. His third, DIE HARD. His fourth, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER.
PREDATOR, DIE HARD (and Cameron's ALIENS) are still where the bar is for the ACTION oriented genre - although PREDATOR and ALIENS have one foot in SCI-FI, they're ultimately action films.
I know you're familiar with DIE HARD, but I'd throw in McTiernan's 1999 retelling of THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR as another perfect example of filmmaking - this one belonging in the heist film genre. TTCA also has a perfect dose of sexy - Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo drip and ooze with inuendo and sexuality - still not sure how the camera lenses didn't fog up!
Keep it up pal!
