2023-03-09 22:31:24 +0000 UTCOne irony here is that Steve Steadham started the first "black-owned" skate brand back in 1986 ( https://stedmz.us/pages/about-us ), Ron Allen had "Fun" in 1992, and there have been a handful of other instances wherein POC have been put in commanding positions in skateboarding (Kareem, Stevie, etc.). Most hardgoods companies lose money no matter what, so Bill's project of 1) working with his teammates for ideas and 2) paying collaborators for graphics doesn't seem that top-down to me.

I think it could be good for bill to show like more visibility on how the brand decisions are made. There is also still the issue that bill is the owner and end source of the (maybe partial, if it’s split with the collaborative artists) profit generated from the merchandise being sold. I think violet is an overall good and I think it’s a sick company. I also think it’s good that an important dialogue is being opened up about it!

The violet boards were meant to represent the team as a whole, not just squilliam strobeck.

It remains to be seen how the company will develop and if WS will eventually hand (creative) control over to Kader or have him as an equal partner or some other model no one can anticipate. Your larger question of who’s selling black culture/benefitting financially from it is a valid one and, as you pointed out, this issue has its roots going back several hundred years. Ultimately, I think it’s good you’re sensitive to these issues as many people aren’t. Always err on the side of sensitivity.

Personally I don't see anything controversial in the content although understand why you brought it down. Potentially shifting presentation from less assumption/judgment to more probing and questioning without concluding may soften the landing? May not be as impactful but the points still stand. Its right to question and scratch below the surface, but as Joa highlights, we're not privy to all the information to have a conclusive position. Who exactly is benefiting and to what extent is imperative, Kaders position/benefits/involvement (same applies to any other black riders) is fundamental.

You're coming at a white guy, not women or blackpeople = not gonna get you cancelled ;) Especially focusing on the distinction between assisting and owning/exploiting, that's spot on! I think you could push a little harder on the idea that Kader should co-own like at least 50% of the company for it to feel good. One thing though: careful with the Reynolds praise in this context. While you're totally right about the status of Baker as a company, Reynolds has repeatedly faced criticism for exploiting black riders and stereotypes - some of it not unfounded, like giving Antwuan and TK gangsta-type graphics and enabling/monetizing their downward spiral without stepping in soon enough like he did for Spanky.

In my opinion just because Strobeck has the coolest modern idea for a black skateboarding company that doesn't eliminate the ethical mine field of owning one. I think if you look at the website and see that he hires black artists and has a queer charity board those can be interpreted as a disguise/ distraction because there may be something backwards at the core of it all. Again not doubting or minimizing Bill's talent, I touched on that in the vid, he could use that talent in a better way imo.

Its a position that only comes up after something interesting has been built. Subjectively I think bill showed some serious hubris creating a brand with this image but that doesn’t take away that the image is a concept he brought to life and executed well.
