Great episode, what an awesome thing to wake up to! As a huge Final Fantasy fan, I would say the main things for me are (which y'all spoke to, nailed it) : 1. FF is a series that reinvents itself with every game. In terms of identity, that makes it tricky to nail down. I don't know if there really is a good answer to the question WHAT IS a FF game when so much of its identity was tied to spectacle rather than repeating and iterating on the same mechanics. 2. Spectacle is harder to achieve now that the gaming space is bigger. With that said, I think FFXVI in particular had some of the best boss fights I've ever played in a video game. I think Square still hits heavy in this space, there's just more to stand beside it now. 3. I think Square learned the power of multiplatform a bit too late. I get that the VII remakes had this, but I kinda get the sense that if what their mainline entry release (XVI) was available on Xbox and PC from the start, there would've been a larger conversation around it. I still think these are phenomenal games and will always hold a special place in my heart in the world of JRPGs, but I do get the feeling that Square is trying to refind their footing with the franchise. Thanks again for a great episode!
