I wouldn't say this is the best anime opening of all time, but it's definitely one of the best.

As someone who has also not read the manga I enjoyed the 2nd season but the first was definitely better. The reason S3 is so bad is normally an anime episode will cover 2-3 chapters of the manga very rarely 4 as that's a lot of info to get into a 20 minute episode however season 3 of tokyo ghoul was cramming in 12-14 chapters of the manga into an episode, it was ridiculously rushed there was way to much info and stuff skipped that the season was just straight bad. Dozens of characters introduced that normally you would get introduced to slowly over a season. Essentially every 3 episodes of season 3 should have been made into its own 12 episode season minimum. Its like if they took the lord of the rings trilogy (extended edition = nearly 11 and a half hours run time) and made it into a single 2-3 hour film.

The third season takes place after the original manga ends, and the 2nd season doesn't follow the manga so it is even more confusing I think. I have never read the manga so I don't know exactly.

There's only two anime in recent memory that have such good openings. they've actually made me tear up a few times.
