What should the next video be about?
Added 2019-11-21 19:13:39 +0000 UTCHey! I uploaded the books relevant to my latest video on the google drive: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1rasWDAFyI4t1EOSePbeLc0LbMKf10rHN
I'll also try finishing the reading notes for the last video soon too, I've just been very busy with uni.
Here are the options for what the next video might be about:
1) This would be about the 1990 movie Total Recall (and potentially Blade Runner), prosthetic memory, and the relations between memory, identity, and authenticity. I would draw mostly on an essay on the topic by Alison Landsberg, but might also use Derrida's ideas on teletechnology. I’d talk about Total Recall as a postmodern take on memory and identity, as it problematizes the connection between them and authenticity.
2) There’s a popular scene in Toy Story 3 where Mr. Potato Head is assembled using a tortilla instead of a potato, but still retains his consciousness and personal identity. So the question arises: where does Potato Head’s personal identity reside? Is it in the sum of his parts, or their particular combination? Similar questions can be asked about humans as well. I will explore anti-essentialist views on personal identity by utilizing David Hume, and possibly Nietzsche/Deleuze.
3) Hayao Miyazaki is often hailed as one of the greatest animators of all time. His movies (and he himself) often appear critical towards modernity and contemporary technology, and show a lot of admiration for pre-capitalist small-scale artisan production. Because of this, his movies often remind me of the 20th century German philosopher Heidegger, who was similarly nostalgic about pre-modern life. I'd use Heidegger as a lens to talk about Miyazaki movies, in particular Heidegger's work "The Question Concerning Technology".
Thanks!

In case you still look at these old threads -- I would be interested in hearing your take on Peter Harrison, "The Freedom of Things." I learned about his work from a recent article on Counterpunch.org.
