September production diary: how can cameras be real if our eyes aren't real?

So much news!!

✦✦✦

Some great things I've read for the next video:

Etienne-Jules Marey: A Passion for the Trace (book)

'A Photograph Steals the Soul': The History of an Idea (chapter of a book)

Why it’s time to stop filming strangers in public for social media thrills (op-ed)

A Paranoid Guide to Fighting the Bugging Epidemic (article – this one's actually TERRIBLE!! But in a very revealing way lol)

Preorder Jacob's new book, "You're Not Overthinking It" – featuring a new essay from me! – here.

hmmm probably! i can't rationalize *why* it would exist but it sure seems like it does. i haven't given it all that much thought, though, tbh.

Oh I can’t believe I forgot this: another recommendation!! Benjamín Labatut’s book WHEN WE CEASE TO UNDERSTAND THE WORLD is the best thing I’ve read all year. It’s a lightly fictionalized retelling of several breakthroughs in physics in Europe, leading up to World War II. Almost everything in the book is true, but it’s basically a horror novel about how quantum physics shredded our understanding of what reality is. Unreal!!!

Super interesting thoughts as usual! I’m getting to a stage of my transition where the changes are becoming increasingly visible, and so the concept of being perceived in public has been a lot on my mind lately too. For better and for worse: of course it feels really good and validating to be perceived in some contexts (queer spaces, etc) but scary/uncomfortable in other contexts (eg. random older men staring me down).
