I've been struggling for a long time about Canadian nationalism. I don't like nationalism in general, and Canada isn't the rosy, goody two-shoes, ultra-friendly country that many of us like to identify with. On the other hand, the situation with the US has made having this kind of conversation complicated... This is still something I don't have a conclusion on, and I'm looking forward to hearing what you think. In lieu of offering any wisdom, I'll offer a random factoid: I recently learned that in the 1770s, Nova Scotia (which at the time included New Brunswick) almost became the 14th colony to join the American Revolution. The story goes that they might have joined if the Americans had "tried a little harder" to convince them. At one point, Washington dispatched two spies to go up to Halifax and report back on people's feelings, but they got lost and ended up turning around to go home. And super glad to hear it'll be similar to "Transition Regret" which is one of my absolute favourite video essays (to the tune of "major part of why I started HRT". It was an emotional kick in the teeth at exactly the right point in my life and I'm endlessly grateful for that) And good luck with the work on the Canada video whatever that ends up looking like. Whenever I've seen that sort of discussion had by Canadians it's always so interesting where the similarities and differences end up being with the same issues in New Zealand and I just *know* it'll be a brilliant video when it's out. Also Clementine absolutely rules. The camera loves her and she KNOWS it. Absolute film star.
