October production diary: Anatomy of a Deleted Scene

Join me as I hobble around on this beautiful autumn day!

Table of contents:

0:00 - Anatomy of a deleted scene

9:18 - Talking about an upcoming video (about nationalism & multiculturalism)

15:30 - Some early thoughts on the "woman employee" tier

I'll leave you with a statement of intent for future production diaries:

"Can Anything Good Happen Here?" is such a good title for that future video. I'm also fascinated by Canadian nationalism, it's so strange because, like you said, what are Canadian values? What national myth are they rallying for? I always think about when I see people using the Canadian flag they way an American would use an American flag, and it's like, that flag has only been around since 1965.

Also in New Zealand and also enjoying Lily's guided walking tours of Montreal!

Wow, this was a really thoughtful article, thank you! I share some of the conflicted feelings the author is talking about here. I def don’t feel self-conscious about using filler words in my everyday life, but on camera/mic, it does make me sound a little more anxious, a little less assured than I really am. It’s an interesting tightrope to walk because I do still want to sound like myself… y’know? 😅

One of the things I'm really glad to have been introduced to by this patreon is how nice Montreal looks. There's something really cool about, like, getting a lil snapshot of a place on the other side of the world from someone just sorta wandering around in it. Re: The Canada video, that sounds really really interesting. That colonial uncertainty and...anxiety(?) around nationality and patriotism/pride is something we definitely have over here in New Zealand too (although from the sounds of things maybe with a slightly more established idea of who we are? I'm not sure) and it's a fascinating topic that would make for a really great video. Look forward to seeing it!!

I’m glad to hear it :) been tricky figuring out how to make Canadian issues appealing to my mostly-American audience, but I do want to find a way. The editing thing has been awesome on my end. I feel like “consultant” can be a very fake job, so I’m trying to approach it like any other working relationship

Lily Alexandre

Newcomers are totally welcome! Most people at that tier have put out 2 or 3 videos, but I’d be happy to work with someone who hasn’t debuted yet

Lily Alexandre

For the woman employee tier, do you have to be a pretty experienced creator already? I'm trying to take it seriously and get on a cadence and stuff but didn't want to take the piss if you're looking for people who are pretty sorted already.

Thanks for the update! To be honest, it was the political stuff that made me join the patreon here, so I'm pretty excited about the project you mentioned. Also, I feel really good about this editing business you've got into. The business model of it (the way you designed it in particular) feels unconstrained by any hierarchy, and involves genuine sharing of interest and expertise, which is cool.

Oh, and I've been reading SO much!! Will have some recs to share once I've finished any of the 3 books I'm working through
