My favorite game for this year would've been Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days, /if/ it somehow had multiplayer. For now, I don't even know what my favorite game of 2025 is because they all became grind-mills, too broken to play because they were all in Early Access, or I burned out on them.

2025-12-20 09:50:31 +0000 UTCI would have said Wilds at 1 and E33 at 2 before December 4th. Octocpath Traveler Zero was/is so good that it immediately shot to number 1. Im a huge fan of dev teams that find a niche inside whatever corp they work for and get to just slide under the radar making something they love. Which is essentially how monster hunter was until World brought it forward. Ocotopath Traveler is that series for Square Enix. The first game felt like a true classic turn based jrpg with updated graphics. The second game was great and had a unique skill acquisition mechanic. OT Zero is the culmination of everything the team learned about what they want to do with the series while making the first two games. The story is beautiful, the pixel art backgrounds are breathtaking, the combat is innovative but still somehow retains that classic feel, the world building was some of the best I’ve seen in the last 20 years. It felt like I was playing a story written by David Estes (favorite author). If anyone is looking for a game that feels like playing Legend of Dragoon or FF1-9 but with modern tech and a modern budget behind it then I cannot recommend the Octcopath series enough.
