Progress Journal, March #2

Greetings Mythicists! I hope your month is going well and your adventures are chock full of unexpected Random Events :)

What progress has taken place since last this journal appeared? Let's take a peek inside ... :)

A Chat With PJ
I had a lovely conversation about solo play in published adventures at the Solo Roleplayers Podcast. The Deconstructing Prepared Adventures article from issue #50 caught their attention since this topic was being currently discussed among them. We even got a little actual play time as pirates in charge of burying a cursed body :)

Compilations Are Compiling
The orders for print proofs of Compilation #7 have been sent, and now I await their arrival. There's a slowdown in hardcover printing which may add a week to the usual delivery time. I'm still crossing my fingers that the #7 POD editions come out near the end of this month, but it may creep into April. Soon after those are available however, the PDF of #8 should come out. That one is just about done. It's a compelling combination of cultivated compilations!

Micro Mythic
Work proceeds slowly but surely with Micro Mythic. I've been hitting Mythic RPG 2e hard lately, so that's taken some wind out of Micro Mythic's sails. Still, in the past few weeks I've been working over some of the one-pagers, smoothing them out. I want them all to work well together, so there have been some minor changes and touchups to already published one-pagers. I'm also making sure it's compatible with Mythic RPG 2e, because I think that helps with consistency but also I'd like to see these two books work together. If you think something in MRPG2e is too complicated, you could swap it out for a relevant one-pager. If you think an area of Micro Mythic can use some beefing up, you can use some MRPG2e rules.

AC In The MRPG2e
Speaking of Mythic RPG 2e, right now I'm working on the Adventures chapter. That's the part that explains how to actually play an adventure, so it has a lot of meaty content like Scene structure. Specifically, I'm currently working on a simplified version of The Adventure Crafter that will be used to make the start of an adventure. This is exciting for me since I've wanted to bring the two systems together for a long time, and this seems like the way to do it. I've long liked the way Mythic adventures start with few details. It's like you begin with a thread (an actual thread, sticking out of a sweater or something), and you start pulling on it, getting more and more. That's generally how Mythic works. But ... it has also bothered me that there is no official way to start with a more fully formed beginning. This is more like traditional modules and adventures, where you get a story at the beginning that sets everything in motion and roots you into a narrative. I use The AC for this, so I think it's perfect to place a version of it into the MRPG2e rules. I've managed to fit almost all of the Plot Points. I've combined some, removed a few, and simplified the language on all of them, but there are 124 Plot Points which fits into a 4 page table. That's long, but still easier than 22 pages of tables in TAC!

Mythic Magazine #52
The next issue of the magazine is underway, containing a bestiary of Mythic monsters and ideas to run non-linear adventures. The beastiary gives me a chance to flex some of the Descriptor and Ranks rules from MRPG2e and Micro Mythic, putting them into practice. You'll probably see more and more of that over the coming months, as I draw rules and material from MRPG2e into Mythic Magazine. That's a nice way for me to field test the mechanics and fine-tune them.

I'm sure there's something I've missed, but that's what's going on so far! Oh! The Spanish language crowdfunding for Mythic GME 2e concluded and it went so well that the publisher wants to do more Mythic stuff! I think it's very cool that the Mythicist community is going more global :)

Happy adventuring everyone!

Thanks for asking, Sam :) It's not a silly question, I've been talking about this book for ages lol I'm sorry that "Coming Soon" from me can actually mean quite a long time. Probably the article that comes closest to the new book is issue #31's "Mythic As A Rules Light RPG". That represents an early draft of how MRPG2e works. The book in progress has evolved a lot since then, but it grew from that framework. It's difficult to pinpoint more beside that, because a lot of stuff that's been appearing in the magazine has been taken directly from MRPG2e. For instance, the way Ranks are represented in issue #52 is pretty much exactly how they appear in the book. The way Contests and Combat is shown in #52 is also pulled directly. Actually, issue #52 is very much a reflection of MRPG2e, including how NPC stat blocks look. The biggest section in MRPG2e that doesn't have a direct correlation in the magazine is the Character Creation chapter. That's largely because it's a huge beast of a chapter, at 70 pages or so (well, that feels huge to me). However, the basic concepts of Descriptors and Ranks that are showing up in the magazine are at the core of that chapter. I hope that helps. I'm sorry for how long this book is taking me. I'm slow lol It's kind of embarrassing that it's taken me years to get this far.

This might be a silly question, but could you recommend which articles to use to get the closest experience to what MRPG2e is shaping up to be so far? I know you've just mentioned TAC and also the Slice of Life rules are gonna be integrated into the system among other things. I'm just excited for the new book :)

Sam

If you do want to include a tool for establishing unique settings the article about world and setting creation from issue 38 is my go to. It gives the same support I get from a pre-established setting and i dont' need my chainsaw.

I am very rooted in not reinventing the wheel so I use a lot of pre-established settings (that I typically go through with a chainsaw to get all the dead wood out, but that is a different conversation), but right along side of them I use Adventure Crafter, because a little context really makes TAC come to life. I think including it in MRPG2 is very good idea. I encourage you to keep the NPC Generator (which I am sure is in TAC book, but I use it from the cards as my starting point for NPC all the time).
