It is all directed by Kubo himself, so don't be misled that it might be filler content when some people call it "anime only" content. No, it is canon now. Simply Kubo was rushed with some stuff and could not add everything he wanted initially. So now after these 10 years we finally can witness things as they should have been from the beginning. The flashback from the beginning is one of the anime only content scenes. It was a much needed addition, as in manga we didn't know about Almighty until Yhwach awakened it when he was defeated by Ichibei. It also gave a very important answer on how Yamamoto was able to defeat Yhwach 1000 years ago. Simply because his eyes were sealed by Ichibei. This also helped to establish some power levels, which were in dispute for the last 10 years. EDIT; Also a thing to remember from this scene is what Ichibei said to Yhwach, that his eys are troublesome, but can never see through the Soul King. The Royal Guards were first introduced at the beginning of this cour, when they were shown standing with Yhwach at the stage. Askin was selected as fourth member of Royal Guard, probably just moments before invading the soul palace. You may recall several scenes where different Quincies were wondering if they would be among "the chosen". True name of Squad Zero's leader is Hyousube Ichibei. "Manako Osho" is kind of a title like "Great Weaver" or "Hot Spring Demon", and means "Monk Who Calls the Real Name". That also explains why Ichibei is upset whenever Yhwach calls him by his true name.
