Run BTS - Episode 35 (Lets make some Kimchi)

Run BTS - Episode 35 (Lets make some Kimchi)

We get together as a family and make Kimchi several times a year. Our recipe is for the Cabbage Kimchi that Jin, Tae, and Namjoon made. It does take awhile. You have to salt the cabbage for quite awhile and then drain and rinse. Then you mix together all the ingredients into a red sauce, like they showed. We then put ours in pint jars and set on the counter for 2 or 3 days to ferment. My granddaughters eat it right then, but the rest of it is put in the fridge to sit for another week. We probably make about 48 jars a year. It gets eaten with everything at our house..

I have a giant food-safe tub-like container and pre-covid my friends and I would set aside a day and they would come over and we'd all pitch in for ingredient costs and we'd spend the whole day making kimchi. There was usually wine and music and shenanigans involved and sometimes the kids would help, but once we were done there was enough for everyone to take home kimchi for their households to last 4 or 5 months. Now we all video chat while we sit in our houses separately and make kimchi together remotely lol. Kimchi is great, there are so many things you can make with cabbage kimchi (especially if it is well fermented) and it's good just as it is too. I also make cucumber kimchi and radish kimchi if i have time but it is A LOT of work. 10/10 recommend eating it, though. :)

Kimchi can be stored and eaten for a long long time. Korea has a big culture of fermenting things so that they can be stored and eaten for a long time. A couple times a year, my mom and I will just make tubs and tubs of kimchi and eat it for like half a year. The tasted deepens and changes at it ages, going from fresh crisp spicy vegetables to rich spicy deep flavors.

Claire

Just out of curiosity but Does it need it's own refrigerator? Is it like different temperature or something ? 😄

JoY

It takes a whole day and sometimes a whole neighborhood is involved

Aizah Mahmood

same! one of the biggest things I'm thankful to bts for is introducing me to kimchi fried rice, lol

Jillian Johnson

BTS have another variety show that is similar to this called BTS gayo which is centered around different types of music. You should check it out, it is also on V Live! There was one episode where they self directed and filmed their mv for spine breaker.

i'm southeast asian and grew up playing that game! i think it's a very common game for kids to play throughout asia 😊

Nadia

kimchi is like crack to me lmao its so addictive

We sell Kimchi-only refrigerators separately in Korea. That's how much I eat kimchi. But not all Koreans like kimchi. There are more than 250 kinds of kimchi, and there are many Koreans who don't know its kind. Typical kimchi is cabbage kimchi and radish kimchi. "Kiddy tub" ^^, but easy to clean!

I loveeee Kimchi! Kimchi is a must at every meal setting in Korea. Ever And yes Kimchi takes a lot of work and they usually do it in a huge tub basin (not kiddy pools). There's a lot of processes and ingredients when you make Kimchi. The soaking and salting of the cabbages takes about 2hrs. And the process it takes to make the Kimchi Paste fillings. It's a lot a lot of work. After all that's done, they usually ferment the Kimchi for weeks and months. The longer you ferment, the more sour it gets. But fresh Kimchi is as equally tasty! :) It's an acquired taste and not everybody appreciates it on the first taste. But usually leaves you wanting more once you acquire that taste! :)

They really do make kimchi like that. In huge basins or even full sized kiddie pools. In smaller towns in Korea, it's still part of the culture for people to gather in someone's home with little mountains of napa cabbage (the most common kind of kimchi, but as you saw in the episode you can make it with different kinds of vegetables) and the other ingredients to make kimchi just before winter. Historically, they did this preserve all their vegetables to last them throughout their long winters. They'd ferment and store the kimchi underground in huge jars so they have vegetables to eat all winter long. I'm Filipino but I've tried making kimchi several times. Of course I use a much smaller basin but it still does take awhile to make. There's so many ingredients that go into making it and making sure it ferments well. There's prep time, plus salting the cabbages, and then putting in the kimchi filling... It's a bit tedious but worth it.

You should try it .Kimchi fried rice is really good but I love eating kimichi for me with any bbq .I didn't really like it when i first tried it but after the second time it's so addicting .😋 When I first watched this episode i didn't know there was so many different types of kimchi dishes.I'm used to the one JIN Rm &V made .

JoY

i cant watch this video tho😭😭 idk if my internet is bad or my phone

When I saw that it was the kimchi episode I had to make ramyun first before watching because I like eating ramyun with kimchi on the side.At first I didn’t like the taste of kimchi. It was an acquired taste for me and now I love it. I always have kimchi in my fridge now and I’ve made kimchi fried rice and kimchi stew they’re really good. When I eat oily foods as well it’s good to have a kimchi side dish. Since it’s your first time DT I suggest don’t eat it by itself. Maybe try it with Korean bbq like grilled pork belly with rice and lettuce and you make a wrap. It’s daebak 👌

florilene

I used to go to my friend's house and make kimchi like this with her family. It's kinda a lot of work and it's hard on your back. We usually used big plastic tubs, but I swear we used a plastic kiddie pool once because it was big, cheap, and available hahahaha. Dude, I've just been to Seattle just recently. Go to the H-Mart there. There's all sorts of Korean food and snacks you can eat and try lol.

theGeekOutGirl

i really love kimchi.... i always have in my fridge at home, and also in our office fridge. it is really good.

HanaV

Hi DT, maybe you can try korean food like a mukbang episode..💜💜 God bless and more power..

Karen

No, kimchi isn’t usually made in a kiddie tub! 😂

Sue Chappell

I always see kimchi in every kdrama but i only started eating after watching this episode. 😁💜

Melody Sy

My cousin only eats it fresh. He's missing so much.

Aliphsi

I have kimchi in my fridge almost all the time. Since I only do it for me I make little portions. I make a lot of paste and freeze it . It's so good and so versatile. When I first taste it I didn't like it but I wanted more and more and now I love it. I would really love to make it with a lot of people.

Aliphsi

You can buy kimchi at most of the supermarkets in the Seattle area. It’s good, kinda sauerkraut-ish but with different spices. It goes well with a surprising amount of meals, even things like tacos.

What V was doing was actually a children’s game called jackstones or in my region it’s called five stones. Aim of the game is really hand eye coordination, to toss a piece of ‘stone’ in the air while attempting to catch the pieces on the floor. There are stages to this game and only if you manage to pick up the number of stones successfully can you clear each stage. I didn’t know they played this in Korea too so I guess it’s prevalent in Asian culture, irregardless which region it is.. the only difference is the ‘stones’ used to toss.. and I must say I am pretty good at this.. just search in YouTube and there are videos showing you how to play. This game will come up again in future Run BTS episodes.

Lenny Merlenna

I hope you get to try kimchi one day, it's so so so good!! I might be biased since it tastes similar to my cultural food but it's amazing haha

Nadia

RM & V aren't the best at cooking to say the least but they are the funniest in the kitchen. Also, RM's nickname is "God of Destruction" so that's why Jin didn't want him to get too close with the scissors or to punch the container. 😂

Nadia

I made kimchi last year. You have to put the cabbage in salty water for 8 hours until it gets soft and then, you do all the process that they guys did in this episode, and much more, because they were given things already done. i would say that it takes around 10 hours, for a good kimchi. In Korea, they use it basically for every single meal they eat. You can leave it to ferment it but fresh Kimchi is really good as well!

Ana Cristina Murillo

Kimchi is basically fermented vegetables, usually fermented with a lot of spices. Sour and spicy and salty all at once. It’s meant to ferment at a cool temperature for a couple weeks before it’s ready so look forward to another episode where they will cook with the kimchi they made once it is actually done!

Laura Moore

This is too funny I just ordered kimchi and grilled pork belly and the episode you’re reacting to is about kimchi 😂 how appropriate. Tae is like a little kid sometimes. He’s too cute....they all are

Lyne

the best way to eat it is with grilled meat and rice, and wrap it all in lettuce. super recommend!

Aya

There are different types of kimchi but overall it's got a very potent, almost sour taste. I think it's best to try eating it with other food before trying it on its own.
