You seemed to be confused by their magic spells. They're using the same spells they've always had. Blanks show up in their stats under the "spells" section, and that says how many spells they have the potential to learn. If they've already used up all the spell slots, or in Bell's case, have no spell slots at all, they must read a grimore to force their bodies to learn a spell. Dediacted mages can learn many spells, up to five or six, while a front-liner like Bell or Mikoto might learn one, maybe two spells in their life.
